South Africans love to travel by road. Many of us have fond memories of family trips to holiday destinations, or to visit family across the country. But with the motoring world increasingly heading over to electrification, will we still be able to travel across our beautiful country in our electric vehicles?
Winstone Jordaan, MD of Gridcars, along with his team, has been spearheading the electrification of South Africa's road network. If you've seen a fast charger somewhere along the N1, N2, N3 or N4, it's most likely a GridCars charger.
We were delighted to be joined by Winstone in our Cape Town podcast studio for a lengthy chat, hosted by our video guy Ciro De Siena.
We hope you find this discussion valuable and we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm sold on EV's. Will be buying one hopefully in the next 3 years. Waiting for import duties on EV's to be reduced or abolished. Hoping on incentives as well. Cannot wait for road tripping in an EV. 😁

Very insightful discussion. Thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot. My next new car certainly will be an EV even if it means waiting for a few years. It’s a no brainer for me personally. EV’s and the range on EV’s will improve as the technology progresses. Solar technology will also improve and become cheaper as it becomes more mainstream. Take a look at how much cellphones have developed over the past 10-15 years. The thought of having the ability to generate electricity from solar energy on my own to then run my car without the concern of price hikes etc is just amazing. Geely and GWM’s Haval are now established in SA and should bring in affordable EV cars for the masses. They know the SA market.

Lovely lovely show - it is exciting. As a very green pensioner with an almost off-grid home. Should I buy a second hand i3s now. If I wait for affordable EV's I may not be able to drive anymore by the time they arrive. I would rather charge my EV from my spare energy PV than give it back to Eskom for cents.

This was a truly insightful podcast. I realise that having battery storage at the charging sites would be incredibly expensive and there is always a risk of theft. Has a study been done on how viable such a setup would be, given sites with limited energy capacity?

I think Bio diesel and Hydrogen, Are going to be better options ..with lithium mining having challenges EV is not going to be ideal. that will impact the price of both EV and Solar, all vehicles are dirty though. With our crime rate, being at one point for a given length of time might poise a danger as fuel stations were hot spots for robberies.. First time watching and finishing a podcast. Nice..

They are already working on batteries that dont use lithium or cobolt wich would change that dirt.i think the main thing now and in the future will be cheaper fuel, not somuch green fuel. Nothing will ever be totally green i think to make bio feul or hydrogen isnt all that clean or green anyway.

It is doable but we are far from the ideal. Lets just say you want to drive from CPT to JHB To be able to do it 1. You will need a R1.2 million vehicle minimum +- R28k per month ( Payments(72months@12%) + Insurance) 2. This car will give you a range of 400km (~R100) 3. You will drive to Laingsburg 260km (+-50% charge left) stop for 30min minimum to get enough juice to get to Befortwest. Laingsburg is 22kw and Befortwest is 60kw (~R70) 4. Drive to almost dead to Befortwest then charge to 80% (~320km range) / 1hr stop which will take you to Colesburg (~R350) 5. 1 hour Stop in Colesburg (320km range) (~R350) 6. 2hr Stop in Bloemfontein (320km range) (~R350) I would assume the person buying this has the laxuary to do this journey in 2 days which is epic. R1400 cost to charge + 1000 for the Night Cape. The same vehicle (ICE) will cost ~R2800 The only Good MOVE is if we are allowed to import second hand electric cars. 2013 Nissan leaf (120km Range) R150 000 including duty.... Now this will make the most of sense. Charge at home @R20-30 per 100km... And also good for the environment is reusing instead of building new ones that are expensive. This will be the good second car... Keeping the ICE version for Longer and weekend trips.

The only solution is all fuel stations in N1 to have the 22kw AC chargers. That 1hr = 140km stop will allow even a mini to tackle the CPT to JHB trip R40 000 investment per Charger. Selling R7/KWH (R4 profit) looking at breaking even after charging 10 000kw - thus about 200 charges on average... Well not considering a lot of factors above. maintenance - app cut - etc

Can you do a podcast on how the batteries for EV's are manufactured what materials is used how safe is it in an accident is there cut off switches isolating the battery pack output, how long will the battery last before replacing is needed and at what cost and if there is materials that is mined for the batteries is this done also in an environmentally friendly way?

Maybe SA's current electrical grid network is the largest stumbling block. Being forced to use backup generators negates the positives of EVs. Until we have a good supergrid to divert power to where it's required at any given time our green programme cannot be optimised effectively. Keep up the great content. Please subscribe, like, share and ring the bell to share the love.

Good day. My vote is for EV vehicles. Just need cheaper vehicles that are within my price range. South Africa is also looking at dropping the speed limits, and if that 10-20kph is taken, the speeds most people can drive will have to drop, giving the smaller capacity EV's a better range, as the drag co-efficiency above 100kph seems like the smaller cars are using too much energy to maintain. The Mini Cooper SE makes perfect sense for me on 90% of my driving needs. I don't do the Cape Town to Jozi trips anymore. Can't even remember when last I drove more than a 120km in one direction, or driving on the N7 to Upington, or even the easier N2 to Mosselbay. With that if the vehicles prices falls into my price range, and the holiday resorts/places have an infrastructure with even a level 2 charger and overnight stop after some distance would make for a relaxing drive. The BMW i3 with the 94Ah or 120Ah model ranges would make perfect sense for my sister, the only problem I have with it, the wheel sizes. Darnit, the rubber can only be obtained from BMW, the skinny anorexic model sized tyres. As the further you you drive away from the major cities, the less you find smaller and or awkward size tyres. If we had to purchase one vehicle for the both of us, Volvo XC40 Recharge, but the P6 (single motor) not the P8 (dual motor) version would work. Unless we are getting something the size MG 5 or ZS, Opel Corsa, Hyundai Kona, because I don't like the Ioniq 5 or EV6. Another hampering factor, how about making the weakest DC charging capacity 50kW. Nissan's Leaf doesn't make any sense for road tripping, the Chademo chargers aren't used.

Interesting, whilst the electric, BEV, in particular, will form part of the propeller energy in this country, please let's be realistic that until the battery magic happens (high density, lightweight, & charging time equal/better to fueling ICE) BEV will remain an urban transporter.2nd, BEV has to go on a serious diet to shed weight to achieve claimed range, plus people must remember in RSA, we take long trips fully loaded with baggage (sometimes with added trailer), and let's face it most average speeds are 110-135km/h. One critical secret this BEV marketers don't realize is that ICE is drastically improving in terms of heat efficiency, and if this heat efficiency exceeds 50%+, BEV will find it hard to make a business case. I have over a decade of living & living with hybrids, so I talk from experience.

Do the people who can afford electric cars in South Africa really drive long distances rather than fly? Even the cheapest used EV is more than R400k. My point is, EV's at the moment, is more of a toy and nice to have than something the average person can afford. Topics like this are "cute" but not practical for the people who would look at moving away from ICE cars because of fuel and maintenance costs..
