They say the past is the best prophet of the future. Professor Umberto Eco wrote our most important moral obligation was to remember the horrors of the past so we wouldn’t allow them to happen again. He was conscious that eventually everyone who had experienced tyranny firsthand in Europe would pass away. “To remember” would then take the form of learning and doing our best to put ourselves in their shoes, fully aware that war is not a rarity and that even the most sophisticated democracies can be lost. This was a wonderful episode, Lieven. Indeed “like a safety card upon boarding a plane.”

Great examples from Shakespeare. Love the words of the loyal servant who stands against tyranny in defence of King Lear. “ Hold your hand, my lord! I have served you ever since I was a child. But better service have I never done you 75Than now to bid you hold.” This was truly moving and gave the voice we were desperate to hear.

Dear Ariana Springfield, thank you for sharing your thoughts. There is so much meaning packed into these simple lines by Shakespeare. Let's hope that science, facts and reason speak louder than the voices that try to divide us with endless opinions and disinformation. I wish you a nice day and hope to see you again at Bold Books and Bones 🌟📚📖🌟

Wonderful episode. I will definitely look for both of those books. Using Shakespeare's plays to confront on of the most important questions of our own times may just be my new favourite style of book. Even if there only is one book written that way so far.

Much appreciated. I will definitely check out Greenblat’s book …..and perhaps I too can use it as a reason to find some nice old copies of Shakespeare’s plays.

I like your perspective but, sorry, the film "Don't Look up" is simplistic.
