Canada: Aerial view of incredible "Tiger Dam" flood barrier laid across freeway 12-1-2021

An incredible feat of engineering obtained by a Southern United States company is currently protecting tens of thousands of people in Canada. The custom made giant flood protection device has been deployed during the night of Sunday to Monday Nov 29-30 2021. A small army of people put all hands on deck to fill large inflatable plastic tubing with water including firefighters, engineers and the actual army. The dam is now resting across all lanes of the Trans Canada or Highway 1 at the Cole Road interchange and will prevent flood waters from flowing to the west if levels arise. Stunning aerial imagery shows the scale of the operation that was conducted in one night and that is still being closely monitored. The so-called Tiger Dams Systems are from a New Orleans based company that build such inventive products for flood control. This barrier was built after civil engineers deemed it appropriate due to the lower level of the freeway at that location. This, despite protecting the Sumas Prairie from further floods, has closed the main and only major artery to the entire Metro Vancouver Area and affects transportation for millions of BC residents.

Excellent drone coverage. Here in Vancouver none of this is being shown on CBC, CTV, Global or the mainstream TV media. Given that this is one of the worst disasters in BC history, you'd think we would get much more local coverage but we don't. Thankfully RU-vid has people like you who take the time to show us the reality, otherwise we would never know.

It’s pretty embarrassing that our main transport link with the rest of the country is this pitiful four-lane road that wouldn’t even pass for a minor arterial road in most cities…The federal government just doesn’t care about the economic importance of the west, but they sure love collecting taxes and duties generated by the amount of goods that cross those two tiny half-century-old narrow “freeway” bridges…..

First, I think the decision making of the people who are actually there doing the assessments and planning is more informed than what we can say looking at a few minutes of video. Second, One can clearly see from the footage that the level of the temporary dam in the areas between the pavement is roughly level with the banks on either side of it. The area directly behind is clearly lower than the banks on either side. That is a low point that flood water can flow through. This was done in response to weather forecaster's predictions of further flooding in the area due to coming storms. People complain after every disaster that more should have been done earlier to prepare. Those same people rush to criticize advance preparations that turn out not to be needed.

I was on that exact spot when it overflowed last time - you can't see it well from the video but the area they have dammed is actually lower and is a key breach point protecting the rest of the video. @@dissinfo6358 It was never intended to. A "major" rise in the water would overflow the entire dike. A small rise would overflow that particular spot - just like it did the first time exactly there. I'm seeing "an incredible feat of engineering obtained by a Southern United States company", but I don't know what I'm looking at. The white bags are obviously some kind of big sandbag, while the orange looks more like tubing joined together. Is this the "Tiger Dam flood barrier"? Is being able to say it was used in Canada going to let them gain credibility in the States? Blocking a highway for self-promotional reasons isn't very Canadian.

I have to Echo, while we can't see the whole picture the video itself seems really ridiculous like they are only protecting about a half a mile section of Highway. Now that is a good one. Probably the same people that complain that they didn’t do enough are the same ones that complain when they do something as a just in case. Just goes to show you that you can’t please all the people all the time, and some people, there is just no pleasing no matter what you do. Nice to see all these beer and wine drinking arm chair engineering experts that can make perfect assessment from a 2 minute video from a hundred feet up. Certainly they have more expertise and info than a well trained engineer on the ground with years of experience. What good is opening this section of the highway going to accomplish anyways at this time. There are closures further east than this that will prevent trucks from getting through. Be glad you can get to work at all, so it takes three hours. Many can’t even get to their homes, let alone work.
