Critical comment affirms that Michael Kamen's "Quintet" is valued as the most important new work for Brass Quintet in the last 40 years, having become a "standard" work for Brass worldwide.
Classically trained Juilliard graduate Michael Kamen, of "Robin Hood" and "Mr. Holland's Opus" fame, composed this piece for Canadian Brass.
Canadian Brass would like to thank FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings) for their assistance on this album.

Some people don't realize the dedication it takes to play this well... It is literally a lifelong devotion and dedication. This isn't just some side-hobby for them, it is literally their life. I get a little depressed to know that even though I am a pretty talented player, I can never get as good as any professional because I chose a different path for my life. Thank you for this, CB...
@Spektre07
@Spektre07 9 лет назад
Kingwut117 Do not be depressed. We all make our choices. I too selected another path. Music is not there strictly to be mastered, but to be enjoyed, Enjoyed the experience music has brought you and strive to be the best whatever you have chosen to be.

I play in a very good quintet, not quite of this caliber, but still a group of great players. I’m the lone non-professional in the group. At the end of the day we smash brass tubes into our face, blow, and try to male them sound pretty. We do it to communicate and to excite. Focus on that and you will find joy in music.
@lukehebert6207
@lukehebert6207 3 года назад
Hey, been there felt that. I think you can get 80% of the pleasure from 20% of the work these professionals probably put in. Just find a group (maybe the hardest part), practice regularly, and enjoy making music together. I hope you find fulfillment on the path you chose!

i think that although Canadian brass is one of my hugest inspirations, and many other peoples as well, that you may have chosen a different life path, but have fun! play on the side and enjoy! that's truly the only way to get better is to like what you are doing

Played this with my quintet during my senior year of high school as the closer to our last concert. As a French Horn player, I couldn't have asked for any better last piece--any better last note--to play in high school. Now in college as a non-music major, although I still am in music groups, I'm still wishing I could have more moments like this.

If you like this music (and who would not?) there is a wonderful rendering of it for concert band. After conducting it many times with my band last summer, I thought about doing it with my brass group at church. A fresh listen to the original brass version changed my mind: As beautiful as this is, I feel it pales in comparison to the version with the full colors of the wind band. Check it out, it is a glorious piece to conduct!

My brass quintet is working on this now, and we're having an unexpectedly difficult time putting it together. Any tips or tricks that may help? It would seem we are all unsure of each others' intentions as far as rubato goes, and despite how much we try to work it out, it never really seems to "mesh" very well. Some of the rhythms between the horn and tuba are a little confusing as well.

@TurkwyBacon41 if "Trombone from 1:50-1:52 OH GOD EW" Is in reference to the harmonic minor clash, plus a emphasitical burst, that is suppose to be there, like the nelson at 3:40 emphisises the notes, that was the effect the trombonist, Gene Watts (the greatest trombone ever) was going for.
@w18902
@w18902 13 лет назад
Yes, very beautiful! And, the music looks so easy on paper, but getting the sound is not so easy. Goof alert: camera operator was wearing red, so you frequently see red reflected in the bells. There is an obvious full body reflectionof the operator at 3:00.

@Thetubaeddie Usually they make some tuba mouth pieces like that because they have a much larger mass, then say a trumpet. So they interact with temperature which in turn screw up intonation. So the plastic ones are used on sousas a lot and other outdoor playing.
@codyb226
@codyb226 12 лет назад
This was old, they now only play on Selmer/Conn instruments. The trumpets are now the Artisan strads, but they were Yammies as shown here. I like that they chose what model they want to play here vs. only playing the standard artisan.
@XxSpiffxX
@XxSpiffxX 13 лет назад
@MrGuitar144 Lol i think this could be a location argument. In the U.S, we dont think conn and bach are that great of brands. I'm a bass trombonist with an Edwards. I would say like 80% of professional bass trombonist use Edwards.
@XxSpiffxX
@XxSpiffxX 12 лет назад
@Rollydamaster There really isnt a "correct" way to play their instruments. People have different theories on EX: "whats the best vibrato method for trombone, slide or jaw?" Maybe u should reword it to "excellently"

No more Yamaha. They are not exclusively Selmer/Conn. Trumpets are the Bach Artisans, bone is a 42 strad, and the tuba is now a C.G. Conn. But they use to be Yammie, as shown here.
@RolandApricot
@RolandApricot 13 лет назад
@GC2010Trumpet They're Yamaha artists, so they all play Yamaha models: Tuba - YCB621 or YBB621 Trombone -YSL8820 or YSL881 Horn - YHR667V Trumpet - YTR8335RGS or YTR8335
@bonumfatum457
@bonumfatum457 12 лет назад
@XxSpiffxX That greatly depends on the song. You use the slide if you need significant vibrato , and your "jaw" if it needs to be less than significant.
