So true! I notice just from reading & talking to ppl online that Palestinians are thought of as lively, funny, caring, resilient people who want peace. No hatred of religion & so appreciative of US support via protests (yet our government has screwed them for decades so we don’t even deserve it) but they thank us anyways. I met two students from our local art college who were filming a project at my place of work. They introduced themselves as Steve and Bob. I said I was pleased to meet them, and with all due respect, what were their given names in their country. They beamed. We practiced saying their Chinese names together. Steve said one of his teachers asked him what his Western name was and “Steve” said he didn’t have one. His teacher said “you look like a Steve.” How rude and ridiculous! It’s time the west stopped being lazy and spent some time learning how to say people’s names, no matter where they come from. I mean really. Having worked and lived in China: It’s culturally very normal for Chinese to adopt western names, and most don’t view it as an abandonment of their identity but as an additional or alternative/supplementary, chosen identity. There are many reasons for it, but the biggest reason is that their names to a westerner are essentially meaningless, and the tonal feature gets stripped away in translation, such that their name basically just turns into a perpetually-wrong morpheme, indistinguishable from between four and nine now-identical morphemes…and that’s before we bring in the fact that identical sounds with identical tones can actually be multiple different words depending on what character represents them. When meeting one another, Chinese will often have a conversation that is basically “Hi, I’m [sound].” “Oh, [this meaning of sound]?” “No, [this meaning of same sound with same tone but different character]”. A person without those tones and the cultural reference might as well be calling them “blah blah”…and that’s assuming they can pronounce the sounds at all. It is not the same as Japanese names, which do not have nine possible alternative meanings to a single syllable, or Arabic names, which have common linguistic ancestors with western names. In my experience and observation Most Chinese actively discourage western friends and colleagues from learning their Chinese names, unless either the westerner already has some degree of fluency in Chinese OR the Chinese name is super-accessible to begin with (Bing Bing, Lang Lang, etc). There are some pronunciation differences that are absolutely unavoidable - I speak some functional mandarin and have spent a year of my life there, and STILL garble many basic names so badly as to render them absolute gibberish. Cantonese and Mandarin are famously inaccessible for westerners - and again, unlike Farsi or Arabic there is no common ancestor or cultural/linguistic analog to bridge the gap (as with names like Layla, Aaliyah, Ibrahim, Yusuf, Yasmin, etc). And that’s before we get into the endless regional dialects of Chinese, many of which function as totally separate languages. The assignment or adoption of western names to Chinese people operating in or interfacing with the west really can’t be grafted onto the same cultural conversation around names that are linguistically closer, that have a longer history of cultural exchange, that have shared cultural references and cognates, that derive most meaning from phonemes and morphemes instead of tones, and that use similar phonological-based writing systems (as Arabic and English use) instead of character-based writing systems. Also, FWIW, westerners working in China with non-English-speaking Chinese - that is, integrating into Chinese society and exiting expat bubbles - almost always have to adopt sinicized or alternative Chinese names. So it is a sort of reciprocal exclusion, one in which the western name is recognized as easier and more functional in an international/diverse setting.

All wars have a lot of lies and deceipt going on, but in this case, the types of things being used incorrectly are not complicated things that even a pro on the subject will have trouble knowing what is a smokescreen and what is actually going on. Like it’s one of those I would typically share because I personally know how to separate comedy and a personal situation. And I am of the opinion that in these times we all need laughter , when the normal day to day is always on edge with everything happening in the world. But then I have a friend in Rafah Gaza and I don’t want to repost it at this time cause I worry with everything that they are currently dealing with in the current situation how would they feel? People didn't see the Palestinian women laughing at the drone... That was such a profound video of how we as Palestinian people know our destiny and I will always love that women although truth is her and her husband probably didn't make it because they decided to stay in their home...
