Cancer Treatment: Why a Vegetarian Diet Helps

PCRI's Executive Director, Dr. Mark Scholz, MD, gives three lines of evidence to argue that a vegetarian or vegan diet is ideal for men with prostate cancer hoping to achieve optimal outcomes.
0:30 There is one principle regarding diet for men with prostate cancer that overrides all others in its significance, and it is that vegetarian and vegan diets have better outcomes than diets that include meat and animal products. It's difficult to change diets and so the purpose of the video is to provide information to help men have a solid foundation for understanding why a vegan or vegetarian diet can improve their situation.
0:53 In Dr. Scholz's own practice he has witnessed a number of cases in which men with rising PSAs choose to go on a strict vegan or vegetarian diet. In cases where men lose weight (suggesting fidelity to the diet), he has consistently seen a cessation of PSA rise, a PSA drop, and then steady healthy PSA results.
2:22 The second line of argument deals with the metabolic nature of prostate cancer. Most people know that with most cancers it is important to avoid sugar. PET scans have shown that most cancers metabolize sugars within minutes. Prostate cancer, however, does not have that relationship with sugar. Instead, new technology has found that prostate cancers metabolize fats (lipids) and proteins (amino acids) at the same fast pace that most cancers metabolize sugar. These lipids and amino acids are the building blocks of animal tissues.
4:06 The third argument comes from T. Colin Campbell's book "The China Study." Campbell rigorously compared regions of China and found that areas with low consumption of animal products also had low incidences of cancer, including prostate cancer.
4:56 Should all men with prostate cancer stop eating animal products? It might be overboard for men with low-grade prostate cancers to make drastic lifestyle changes due to their cancer. Men with advanced disease (Royal), however, definitely ought to consider cutting out animal products.

At 75 my psa went from 3.00 to 5.1 in a few months. Read Dr Campbells book The China Study and went on the plant based diet. Cooked for myself mostly: oatmeal and blueberries in the mornings, lots of greens 🥬, grains and beans, low oil. In three months psa went back to 3.0. After 5 years, psa still 3.0.

Just got back from my visit with my urologist. He suggested a vegan diet for my Gleason 6 cancer. Says his patients have benefitted greatly from this diet and some have delayed treatment for years while on active surveillance. I am pretty much a vegetarian now. Jumping over to being a vegan will be an easy move for me and certainly worth a try.

Biopsy was taken which showed a Gleason 3+3 x 7 3+4 x 3 and 4+3 x 2 PIN many, MRI was net except 2 nodules 1 cm diameter, equivocal in the prostate, prostate capsule and any structures surrounding the prostate were neg for cancer. As soon as I got a PSA reading of 10 and before my MRI and biopsy, intuitively I went on a vegan diet and cut out all sugars and processed wheat, stuff like that. Never drank alcohol, tea or coffee (preference). I figured I don't have a Gleeson 6 because my PSA had gone from 6.1 to 10 in one year. Hence I needed to take action before the full diagnosis was done. The MIR gave me 4 out of 5 in terms of probability, so this clinched it. I didn't have any problems because I was already vegetarian except when going out, which was not a regular thing at all. So it just meant cutting out dairy and eggs. But thank you for this great video which brings it together. Unfortunately I am already underweight!!! So that's another challenge.

Another explanation is perhaps being overlooked: Men on vegan diets tend to see their testosterone levels drop, with the result being a natural from of ADT! While not as strong as Lupron, this can account for slowdowns or drops in the PSA counts discussed here.

@oscarcat1231 4 года назад
Adam Craig protein and the amino acids it is made of is in every whole food. There is no accurate protein requirement measurement - just eat a whole food diet with a good range of foods to get your nutritional requirement. There are nutritional interactions to be aware of e.g coffee reduces iron absorption, an orange taken with iron supplement increases absorption etc. From an ethical standpoint why enslave and kill any animal. Fish get there omega 3 from algae - so take a algae omega 3 supplement or the natural vegan sources of omega 3 e.g. seaweed avoiding toxins in fish flesh & farmed fish - very unhealthy & unethical. Meat has no fibre, has no phytonutrients but saturated fat, cholesterol, carcinogenic compounds. Eat a variety of whole grains - quinoa, buckwheat, barley, spelt - good fibre & protein from them plus protein like any wholegrain. Women ideally should have 7 veg/2 fruit per day and men 10 veg/2 fruit. Difficult but eat more of these foods.

All those measures may be beneficial before prostate cancer develops. However, cancer means that there are genetically altered cells in the body. Those cells cease to react to any form of diet, and just continue to grow. They can do so even if oxygen supply will be cut off. Also, they do not need glucose because they can get energy from fat or proteins.

@@fastrivers812 I am sorry to hear that. There are different mechanisms cancer cells escape the surveillance of the immune-humoral-nervous system that is responsible for integrity of the body and soul. Certainly, healthy life style may help to slow down tumor progression or even eliminate it. First of all, any kind of physical activity, such as bycycle, swimming, walking or fitness. Second, the appropriate nourishment rich in minerals and vitamins. Third, keeping a solid spiritual integrity defeating excessive stress and keeping clise contacts with nature, art, music and God Almighty. Finally, there is a hope in the novel drugs and vaccines that may restore control of the immune system over cancer cells by activating pathways through MCIA and MCIB proteins. This will take some time, but first trials are ongoing. If you want to know more you may wish to read a chapter written by myself and available on Research Gate before printing in Springer Verlag "Complementarity, Complexity and the Fokker-Planck Equation; from the microscale quantum stochastic events to fractal dynamics of cancer"

@przemkowaliszewski3290 2 года назад
@@fastrivers812 It is probably to early to think about experimental therapies that may also be risky. At the present step, it is important to answer a question if your cancer is limited to the prostate or not. If your PSA < 10 ng/ml (or mg/dl), there is about 5% chance that you have some occult lymphatic metastasis. Bone metastasis are likely if PSA > 20 ng/ml. If cancer is limited to the prostate you can treat it locally e.g. electric current (IRE), brachytherapy, external beam or surgical procedure with consecutive hormonal therapy). If PSA is very high, > 50 up to 2,000, then it is reasonable to start antitumor therapy with one of the newest drugs (Abiraterone ( Zytiga) + chemotherapy with Doxetaxel + LHRH analigs) or Enzalutamid (Xtandi) + LHRH analogs.
