Two-time college basketball champion and Las Vegas Aces' Candace Parker talks about the soaring attention, money and scrutiny behind women's college basketball with Gayle King and Charles Barkley. #CNN #News
Angel Reese, Caitlin, Juju, and the other ladies have made me a women college basketball fan. I am 50 years old, and since last years Women NCAA basketball championship game, I have watched more games this past year than the total of my entire life. This is a great moment for not just women. Thank You.
I have to tell you, the 1st Half of that game between LSU & IOWA, was THEE most exhilarating & spectacular 20 Minutes of Basketball that i have EVER witnessed in ANY Basketball game at ANY Level!
@@Bam_Bam_Bam_Bam - oh ewe poor little jealous & resentful child ... one day you may hit that yardstick on the bathroom door frame & they might let ewe play peewee baseball.
@@Bam_Bam_Bam_Bam Random person: "This game has got to be the best basketball game I've ever watched" You: "You've never watched a basketball game before" What's my blud waffling about? You're not making any sense 😅
Then you didn’t watch the UConn vs NC State Double OT game in the Elite 8 ‘22. I went back and forth on who was going to win that game. That was the best Women’s game ever.
People who hate the players don’t really love the game. You can disagree with how they handled a possession or maybe you don’t like their style of play but no one gets to the pros or this level of collegiate play without being an absolute expert artist. Critics are aptly named, they should be considered in the appropriate light. ❤ Thanks and Congratulations to everyone involved with bringing the well deserving world of women’s athletics into the spotlight.
I have loved women's bball for years, been to many games when there were only a few hundred in attendance. I won't say hate, but dislike for CC is definitely there for me. It stems from her preferential treatment by the refs, and her often poor sportsmanship on the court. I love football as well, and the same can be said of Brady, Manning, Rogers, etc. Same can be said of the NBA. Same in the men's college game- watch what Zack Edey gets away with. Preferential treatment of stars happens. Its actually MORE irritating to long time fans of the game than newcomers. Candace Parker and the GREAT Coach Pat Summitt (GO LADY VOLS!) are still the icons of the game in my opinion. Yes, the Clarks and Bueckers of the world will make their mark. It would just be nice if they weren't jerks while doing it. But that's how sports stardom works- ego is a helluva drug, and you can't be the best without it. Double edged sword.
people also hate players because of the way they carry themselves as human beings. I love the game having a daughter who played D1 I have been watching the game since UConn Tennessee days. So to say the hate comes from dont love the game is pure BS. Look Angel Reese is a great rebounder great at putting the ball back. She is a decent passer. She also cant hit the broad side of a barn as soon as she steps away from the basket. I think she is gonna have a hard time against the bigs in the WNBA at least at first. Love her game but the way she comes off in pressers shows a lot of immaturity. Her last one before the Final eight she actually said everybody wants to be LSU. I mean how delusional is she. She never ever in any presser gives the other team an ounce of credit. it is always about her and how she grew up in Baltimore. Making it seem like she was some kind of street kid. Got news for ya her parents are upper middle class people and she went to a private school where tuition is over 12,000 a year. She was embarrassing after the SC game. waa, waa, waa,. Cry's saying she is sexualized. Grow up you are in the modeling profession one that is constantly sexualized. You really think men are looking at your outfits? Show just a little bit of humility and be just a little more humble about yourself and she would be more liked. My hope for her is she gets to the WNBA works on her mid range game and becomes a lot more mature in the way she carries herself. She is a great player but there is something to be said about how one comes off in pressers and interviews. She is still young so she has plenty of time.
I'm not surprised to learn that Angel Reese is reading comments and upset by what she finds there. I hope she stops reading the BS and discovers all the support she deserves. She's a great player who has elevated women's sports. I cannot wait to learn what her bright future entails. xo AR
Compare the LSU Elite 8 press conference to the UConn Final 4 press conference and Iowa's last press conference. Which teams and players showed more maturity and deserved more respect? The actual question the reporter asked was simply "What is it like to play with Angel Reese?" The reporter I assume had some insider info about the Vogue article and Reese's WNBA plans. The LSU response was literally insane
She shouldn’t have put out the “sexy” photographs that a swimsuit model would and not expect to get sexist remarks. That was poor judgment. She can do it, but don’t get mad when ppl turn you into a sex symbol afterwards. That’s BS. The attacks on her for “taunting” when she beat Iowa were also BS. These are competitive players. CC had no problem with it, why would anyone else?
She should be talked about more in the goat convo. The most dominant player in college when she was at Tennessee.....and carried that over to the WNBA. Any accolade you can think of, she's won it. The most complete all around player i ever witnessed.... had no flaws. I said "had" because shes older now and the skills have diminished.
agreed. And Candace would also be the first to tell you, one of the people who did the MOST for women's college bball is the Great Coach Pat Summitt. RIP. She was the best, and Mulkey, Staley and even Coach Auriemma will tell you about how great Coach Pat was, or they are lying.
@brandonshannon6864 back to back player of the year and championships....then won rookie and player of the year at the same time. That may not happen again. Clark could pull it off though.
The unfortunate reality of the wnba is that people, for some reason, still don’t watch the wnba . The attention that women’s college basketball is getting is incredible , and for good reason - these girls can play !! But I just don’t see it translating to the wnba. Reese should have stayed in college another year , get another 2 million .
Men didn't want to share the $$. The change began when a video went viral of what WBB players received in comparison to the men. It has really changed since then. It's difficult for the media which is ruled by men to deny the quality of the product anymore. I'm not a man hater. I'm just telling the truth. Until money is shared in the high school, college and in the pros the quality won't improve. Investment leads to success. Enjoyed listening to this broadcast.
Women’s ball is great because we are starting to see their stories. It’s the personal stories of the players that make them so much fun to watch. Angel is a great player but consistently shows poor sportsmanship especially when winning. She is young, hopefully she will learn. Caitlin also has some maturing to do as well. Let’s keep in mind that these are young people. Hopefully, they will carry the excitement into the NBA.
These new generation of athletes are just different. All across the board. Social media is a huge part of this. I don't think NIL would be a thing if not for social media. People like B.Stew are phenomenal duh. These new kids though, super fun to watch.
I feel like CP was one of the first HS recruits that were crowned as "generational talent" type ballers.... Some of that had to do with where the world was at with media, the internet, etc. Even players like Taurasi/Holdsclaw/Catchings weren't as big news because of the time of their introduction to the world. Nowadays a Juju Watkins has so much hype coming from so many different sources that it brings so much insane attention to her and the sport she plays.
Its interesting too... Juju is amazing, but there were a handful of players in her recruit class that are at a similar talent level. A unique (and not suprising difference) is Juju's marketability... It's easy to market a player, especially a female, when they are considered conventionally attractive.
Taurasi and Stewie don't garner as much attention and sponsorship deals, tv campaigns, etc b/c they aren't considered supermodels... A player like Dijonne Carrington isn't as talented as Stewie, yet she gets included in more TV ad campaigns (skims, etc), because of what marketing managers know sells.
When i 1st learned about Womens' Collegiate BKBALL, my 2 Fav Teams, were UCONN & Tennessee. Yes, i followed Parker's College Career, but stopped after she left & Pat passed away. Ultimately, i stayed with UCONN; they did afterall, give my Favorite WNBA Team - the Great Sue Bird!
@@MeanMug_8448 "The fans"? What fans? When have 12 million people ever tuned into a women's basketball game? Let me answer that for you: never. Never even close! It's because of Clark. It's her setting records. It's her throwing up 3s like she's Steph Curry. You can pretend anyone was interested in women's hoops before Clark came along, but the #s will call you a liar. And this isn't hate, I've been to many women's games in in person, it's just reality.
@garyco766 So you know that 12 million people tuned in to watch Clark?! How funny you don't believe the government, but believe bull$hit the media tell you!! Miss me with your emotions and your opinions!! Back it up with facts!! We all can say what we want, but it doesn't mean it's true!! Continue on believing that bull$hit azz narrative the media is pushing!!
Juju beaking those records in 3 years. Caitilin records are temporary. Its not just her its everything rhey beat an undefeared team and she played with bums and won good for her. But stop being an idiot
She’s gonna break most endorsements money for a women athlete probably. Nike will pay her over 10 million annually for her signature line you will see.. 💰💰
@@TaiyouArt Assuming she goes to the pros and excel. If she ends up like Christian Laetner and Adam Morrison she's not getting jack. She's going to go down as the biggest bust in WNBA history if she doesn't live up to the hype. She better work on that lazy defense, too, while she's practicing all of those half court 3's
Fame is a choice by people in the arts, sports, politics, etc. Ninety percent of these public figures are not celebrities because they choose not to participate in the media, they chose to concentrate on more important things outside of their profession rather than trying to be 'a personity'.
All that abuse and hate because of trash talking? Men trash talk all the time in all sports and do they get death threats? Bunch of bullshit this talented player is being harassed... It is a man's world!!!
If the talent had been there, they would have shown it as they push the envelope on a daily basis. What you’re saying today out of Kaitlyn Clark and Angel Reese is greatness. We did not have greatness before to this level.
It’s suppose to be competition between the two but they are 8:13 making about black and white they play are great players different styles of game I love them both I wish both of them the best ❤
I had never heard of Candice Parker until this video. I never watched a women's game until this year. If they don't embrace Clark, they are complete idiots.
Wipe your eyes and take a good look. She brought it on herself with her unkind actions toward Caitlin. Note the different responses Caitlin never denigrated Angel. She just went out and did her job in a classy manner. Angel went loser victim.
Next up gets better and better. Lot of great players in the WNBA and at one time you all were rookies, everybody grows so suck it up ladies and appreciate the growth that comes for the new rookies entering the WNBA and stop all the hate.. The Game is getting better… Go Chicago Sky..
These fans coming to female basketball with this much hate for the players is what will drop the ratings soon. Encourage everyone. Without all these other girls playing.... Caitlin wouldn't be a start .... learn to love the game
She's still in the final 4. Still all news has been on Angel Reese. Clark only make yt ppl feel good. Clark is not a star, she a yt girl with a jumbo shot. That's why the media have to work so hard to prop her up.
@@ed52369 she's still in the final 4 yet my feed is Reese Reese Reese. Clark don't get any engagement or imprints without a villain. You start watching Clark because you wanted her to shut down Reese. The media had to force Clark on ppl for ppl to pay attention.
@@loststoryproductions See you said Juju and crooked that's my point Clark is a great player it didn't translate to exciting player. Before Reese all eyes where on Cameron who I think was Steph God sister, Paige was the cool kid on the block and HVL who was like the pretty baller.
I love that majority of the people slandering Angel Reese are men who barely or do not watch the WNBA. CC is a great college talent like JJ Redding, but she is not going to be all that in the league.
You could at at least spell JJ Redick's name correctly. Time will tell whether she will be a force in the WNBA. One thing is undeniable, she puts butts in seats, and God knows the WNBA needs that.
I want everyone to understand that it's never been about the quality of basketball. Well, it is, but if you compare men vs women, we all know which side has higher quality. Having said that, it comes down to entertainment. I find women's basketball lot more entertaining. They're more driven, they're not multi billionaires, they play for the love of the game, in short, it is pure and exciting. So I will pay to see top quality women over top quality men any day of the week. And at the end of the day, it's all about the numbers. If more people tune into women's game than the men's game, NBA will go bankrupt and WNBA will thrive. So to those that claim that men's basketball is higher quality basketball than women, that's irrelevant. At the end of the day, it's about entertainment. Who do we want to pay to see play? Who do we admire? Who do we respect? Who do we find more entertaining? ... Right now, the answer, at least for me, is, women.
Ummmm... bullshit. Higher quality IS more entertaining. Watching players that are faster, jump higher, have insane body control, that put in highlight dunks, IS more exciting - period. Caitlin changed the game for women because she brings some of those aspects to the women's game that hasn't been there before. I find myself watching women's hoops for the first time in years, 100% because of her, and I'm far far far from alone. Before 2023 the highest watched women's basketball game was less than 5M viewers. Last year's championship game got almost 10. This year's semi final Iowa vs UConn got over 14, which is twice as many views as any game that didn't include Caitlin Clark. Ever.
Candace Parker and Diana turasi need to move the hell on and let the young bloods in give them a legit chance to make a roster spot instead of holding up roster spots
"Given a chance to succeed." No one wanted to watch cause it sucked. I don't know why anyone would be excited about Angel Reese shooting less than 50% in most of the tournament. Watching Caitlin cook the whole team was entertaining.
It is funny how they feel it is necessary to mention how "women" players have brought eyes to their game. It is plural. Caitlin Clark brought them. And for anyone that wants to dispute this, just look at the views during all the tournament games and see which ones had the highest ratings. They ALL have Clark in them. So, stop with the male bovine manure and just admit it.
Good for her to say the colleges should take on the responsibility of helping there athletes through the struggles of fame, but she should've also said, they wont, cause they want these Black Kids getting paid to fail now, there failure will justify these young athletes not getting paid like in the past. that, put
I ran out of time to rant about this last night; but am i the ONLY one that is bothered that the NC2A deliberately put the LSU/IOWA game on for the E8 instead of atleast the F4! SHAME on your jealousy & fear, that the Women would garner more attention & make MORE $$ for this coming weekend, than the men. Just SHAME!!
with more and more teams getting better and parity becoming more prevalent in the womans game you will see more of these better matchups in the elite 8.
I have all respect for Clark n Angel but ppl who make comments like they the best ever clearly don’t know shit about women basketball. 1st the game is different. 2nd they not going to dominate the wnba They will however bring more ppl to the game n when those ppl come to their first wnba game they will see that it’s a completely different game then college
For Candace to keep talking about “the players that laid the foundation” while down playing the fact that this success the women are seeing is specifically due to CC is silly.
But she is the biggest superstar ever. By a mile. The most watched games in women's hoops history have all involved Caitlin Clark. The Iowa vs UConn game had twice as many viewers as any game that didn't include Caitlin, in history, and like 3 times as many as any women's game before 2023. That's superstardom on a level never dreamed of before Caitlin, and if you think the rise in popularity in women's hoops doesn't fall directly on her shoulders, you're lying to yourself.
@Redridge07 Basically. I think people are mostly watching for Clark, and generally more interested in college than pro, so I think she'll draw a little extra attention to the WNBA, but not as much as people might think.
@@Bam_Bam_Bam_Bam she was responding to a question why did you go back and actually watch the LSU press conference after the game before running your mouth
Angel made herself the villain, lost, then attempted to deflect and change the narrative with this display. Clark put it on LSU, plain and simple. Angel is doing what many black women attempt to do when faced with trials, become the victim and dodge accountability and scrutiny. She made herself a villain with all the taunting of players, as well as a coach, then lost. She also sexualized herself with the sports illustrated swimsuit issue and TikTok one piece see through outfits. Will this episode have occurred if LSU had won the game? Absolutely Not!!! This immature episode will not work.
