I’ve always loved this song and Marilyn. I had a very bad addiction to pain pills prescribed by my doctor after a severe accident…an addiction that brought me so close to dying. To be honest, there’s no explanation why I didn’t die on several occasions during the six years I was addicted. My mom had told me she had already planned to play this at my funeral, because she was certain I wouldn’t survive. I’ve been sober for 12 years now. I’m so thankful I was given a chance at life again, unlike so many others that lose the battle.

This is the version my vocal teacher introduced us to. Its beautiful. The princess Diana version is also nice. However this will always be my favourite. This song to me screams genuine appreciation for a person as a person and not all of the labels we gave her...

I was obsessed with Elton from the age of 6, and this was the first time I saw him with my mum and late dad.. December 86 in Sydney... I was 10 years of age and my mum always told the story that i just stood there with my mouth wide open the whole show in amazement - some 40 concerts later and nothing has changed.

I was listening to this song this morning thinking of the Queen now to hear that she passed.

I don't think there's a better performance than this 1986 live version in Australia. Simply amazing and extremely emotional. And if the sound of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with "loneliness was hard ..." swells - just beautiful! This performance still touches me today since I heard it many years ago on a Transatlantic Night Flight.

I was a teenager in the 70s. Been an Elton John fan since the very beginning. I remember when this song first came out and I bought it and played it for my Dad. He loved it. He said to play it at his funeral… we did.

I love the feeling and emotion Elton put into this perfomance. For me, this beats the studio version hands down. His facial expressions at certain points seem to indicate he was having emotions about the song as he played and sang.

One of the greatest songs ever made, I just bought the goodbye yellow brick road vinyl original from 1973 and it has this on it!!

I also liked the rewritten version he composed for Diana, Princess of Wales and for Queen Elizabeth II, which the first line goes, "Goodbye, England's rose..."

See that? A tear in his eye toward the end. That's how powerful this song is. That's how powerful of a songwriter and performer Sir Elton is. He wrote about someone he never knew from a different country. Amazing. Thank you Sir Elton John for giving us this masterpiece.

Elton has done so many live versions of Candle in the Wind but this performance in Oz is the best best best ever. Perfect in every way.

The live version was recorded at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on December 14, 1986, the last stop on his Australian tour. Elton had been battling throat problems for months, and in November had to cancel a show in Perth when his voice gave out on him. On the live recording, he sounds strained, but the orchestra and the enthusiastic crowd help mask it. In January 1987, an Australian throat specialist performed surgery on Elton, removing a lesion that thankfully was non-cancerous. He made a full recovery but didn't tour again until September 1988.

This wasn't released as a single in the US until 1987, when a live version was issued from Elton's Live In Australia album featuring the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. This version made #6 in the US, and in the UK, where it was also released, made #5. When it was first released as a single in the UK in 1973, it hit #11.

Elton I feel like Diana needs to still be forever remembered, even every day, I was thinking we could have a day each year to celebrate Diana, make it a day the world celebrates her life or perhaps a special coin or even a note with her picture on it. That way we'll always remember her and she'll always be around. I think it's a great idea.
