Thanks for the direct and simple defense techniques. I am 70 years old and have trouble remembering the fancy techniques and they come off “cobbie” when I execute, and would never work in a real work situation. Thanks for applying common sense.
Great video, Gary. Thanks for pointing out the need to quickly pull the weapon back after the groin strike too. Very important. Also nice detail on the potential for different outcomes/body responses from the attacker. Both of those concepts are overlooked too often in other on-line training videos. Keep up the great work (yes I realize I am commenting on a 2019 video.)
I love the three strikes in rapid succession! I'm 57 years old, have two artificial knees due to an injury in service, and have lung damage from cancer. I can't get into a long drawn out situation. Three rapid strikes and end it! I wish you would give seminar in Charlotte NC or Gastonia NC so I could learn first hand.
Good video. I am almost 76 years old and if I got into a fight, I would need to win it quickly because I am not very strong. Thank you for keeping is simple and do-able for us older people.
I suffer a rare bone disorder alongside arthritis at a younger age of thirty. There are times when where I live isn't always the best when it comes to friendly people(especially around winter!) This video makes me feel a lot safer god forbid the time ever comes when I need to defend myself with my cane. Thank you!
I am a retired police officer of 27 years on the street. I have had numerous classes in baton training. I would have to say that Master Hernandez video is better than the training I received. It is quick and to the point. I also agree with Mr. Slough, to much info is confusing.
Agreed. This is more practical than what they are currently teaching at the cop factory. I'd actually prefer a long stick to a baton but would never get approved.
I agree with your comments Larry, "this was an informative lesson" from Master Hernandez, and yes, "keep it simple"! Practical self-defense can, absolutely, become hampered by unnecessary complexity. Train these straight forward techniques, and "neurons that fire together, will wire together" and will be ready to flow like water if ever needed. And thank you for your many years of service.
Thank you Master Hernandez, this was an excellent lesson. My past Hapkido instructor included teaching of cane techniques, but an injury forced me to leave my training before I got to that phase. Thanks to your help, I can still acquire new practical cane skills which have many advantages for personal protection. I will keep a close-eye on your lessons. All respect...
I like this the best. It is easier to strike the target, minimize a miss, and keeps distance to avoid contact or a knife. The chest strike first keeps your opponent at a distance setting him up for a multitude of strikes. A good shot to the solar plexus or liver will seriously slow down the attacker.
Thanks for your video. Getting that free hand up also can draw their eyes upward, increasing the odds of landing the groin strike. I've been working on a quick 1st strike because that's the one that really matters. In my experience, most men drop both hands when struck to the groin, regardless of weapon. (foot, hand, stick etc..) Another reason to get the cane back quick. They're grabbing for something. Experienced fighters may drop 1 hand. My 2nd strike has been to the knee/thigh. HARD. My plan is to escape, or buy time to draw my Spyderco Street Bowie, or P365, carried on my weak side. (although the knife is horizontal carry, so can be drawn with either hand) My knees are shot from getting old and fat, plus 10+ years of formal martial arts competition in my 30's and 40's. Thanks again !
@@Savagecane my name is Robert senters I was training with you as a pre teen for a couple years, I’d love to come and catch up with you brother hope all is well! Still have all my trophies 🏆 👊🏼🥋
@@RobAll3n I remember you young man you are always welcome to come by we will be open after July 4th Tuesday through Thursday from 6pm to 8pm. Stop by and say HI
Sweet thanks a lot I walk with a cane all the time for an injury so I think in reality it's probably a good idea to be able to use it thanks so much I am subscribing 👍👍👍👍😅
The problem I have is with the very basics of “How to grasp a cane” holding the cane as most people have been taught to puts the pressure on the hook and does not give the person the available balance that reversing the position which puts the pressure into the stick. This will also allow you o use the hook without having to turn your cane.
You need to do a video on strikes and defenses you can use indoors with problems associated with close quarters such as normal low ceilings that prevent overhead swings like that, and hallways with closed in walls....
I took fencing in college. My professor assured us all that he could win a fight with most of the population with just a cane. Knowledge is power. Add some technique and practice and your all set.
I have been using the 3 rapid cane strikes for years however my first strike is below the knees and my second strike is to the stomach area and my third strike is to the chest area. Below the knees reduces the risk of an assailant from grabbing the cane.
I enjoy your videos and techniques for cane self defense. I have bi-latteral peripheral neuropathy and use two canes to walk and keep my balance. All of your techniques show how to use a single cane for self defense, but what do you do when you have to use two canes just to walk?
Question: when you’re striking with the bayonet grip, which hand is strong hand. I’ve always used whichever one is leading. Sometimes I’m wondering if it’s both. I’m going off of the biofeedback I get with my BOB. :)
Hi Jimmy With me it's always been my right hand which is the hand that's closer to the crook because I am also right handed and it's more closer to my shoulder when I'm thrusting. I feel I get more power that way. But that's just me. Thank you for watching this video.
The walking stick is the ultimate self defense tool for most people .You can carry it legally in any country and the older and weaker you look the less legal issues you will have if you actually have to use it to defend yourself . Can you imagine going to court hunched over hobbling in on your cane with your white beard and glasses while two young thugs try to claim you beat them up with excessive force ....Nice video ...short and simple just 3 moves practice it over and over until your muscle memory means you don't even have to think about it ....
Walking my small dog at night. People let their dog outside without restraint. What do you recommend for fighting off a dog? Please keep in mind that one hand is holding my dog's leash, so only one hand for cane moves. Thanks
Hello if you are not just trying to hit it in the head because you don't want to really hit it that bad.the best thing to do if you get a chance hold your cane by the shaft and use the crook to move it or pin it against something. You can also hook the neck and move it back. I can do a video on things to do to stop a dog attack. I haven't done one in the past because that's a touchy subject to get into because of the love for animals alot of people have including myself. But I will do one very soon. Thank you Gary Hernandez
@@Savagecane I, too, am a dog lover. I don't want to hurt the attacking dog. Just want to keep it at bay while I try to walk away. However, my dog is small and if a bigger dog gets hold of her, I need to hit the attacking dog such that it will let go of my little dog. When a dog gets hold of another dog, it's hard to get them to let go. Thank you for any help with this tough situation.
Hello its Canemasters cane called the black belt cane. I had it for 15 years. They can get a little costly. Here is their website www.canemasters.com. hope that helps and thank you very much for watching
Good, useful techniques, but having experienced several unprovoked attacks, it is not a good idea to do one or two strikes, then pause to see if that's enough. You keep whacking your attacker until he goes down. Then be prepared in case he gets back up quickly. If he stays down, get the hell outta there!
No I work it both ways and I can defense myself in either way. This way does not limit my ability to defense myself either long range or in close combat . People are only limit by their physical ability or lack of training. And even with physical problems most can training in someway of defending themselves.
Just one question ? In lots of other ( Non Cane ) clips by others, striking alongside the neck, knocks the opponent out ???? How come, you do not show this ? Is it because the other clips, are bullshit ? Because I would have thought, instead of swinging for the collar bone, but for the side of the neck, the stick, would immediately render them unconcious ??? Apart from that, at 70 with Arthritic hips, I enjoy your videos, unlike the other guy, that ponces around with a walking stick, like he just stole it from an old guy !
Hello Holger in this video when I do swing to the upper body as in the shoulder and head area. I either go for the head or collar bone because both will are very effective when it just right. The neck not bad but is a smaller target area. I hava gone there in other videos a few times but nit my go to spot. That's just me I getting to old to fight a young man and need to hit them in spots that will hurt and stop them. Hopefully that helps and Thank you very much for watching.
If the assailant is wearing trou as very baggy with the crotch down between the knees then the crotch strike may not get anywhere near the groin. What then?
I was sure he say “If I hit him in the NUTS and he bends to the ground😫, I GO TO TECHNIQUE # 3 “AND RUN LIKE HELL” 😂😂😂‼️ AND I am 71 Which means, me & the Dude in the comment below ⬇️ R In the same Club 😂 👍
Men spend their entire lives developing the groin defense reflex. It's NOT an easy target and exposes your weapon to be grabbed by both your opponent's hands.
Groin strike from the ground up like that is nearly impossible for a beginner or novice. The groin is a very small target. A cane is not brought upward from the ground by a beginner, especially a weaker person, with enough speed or force to bypass the instinctive block by a man guarding that area. A moving target coming at you, especially "Come at you quickly" means one or the other leg forward, partially obscuring the target. You would need your attacker to be squared off, motionless in front of you to have even a small chance of success, unless you are moderately physically strong and well trained. Striking a dummy like in the video is nowhere near a street fight scenario. Your attacker has the advantage of surprise, is moving, and already sees you have a potential weapon in your hand. His focus is going to be the tip of the cane, believing you must raise it anyway to strike. He will be prepared to block low initially. The groin strike may feel instinctive to do, but unless you are at least a novice at cane fighting, or carry an extremely lightweight cane, you're not going to be successful trying it in the street. Most of the people commenting on here are either elderly or have a moderate to severe physical disability. They are not well trained with a cane, nor physically fit enough to employ a groin strike. Please try and keep them in mind as you instruct. They do not have the wrist, forearm or shoulder strength to contemplate that strike as forcefully and accurate as the instructor. Don't believe me folks? Your target is aprox the size of your fist. Fill a sock half way with sand or pebbles. Hang it from a string with the height from the ground aprox 28-32" average distance of the genitals. Now try striking it. If you do succeed eventually, then slightly swing it a couple inches side to side to simulate movement. Again, this is assuming they are perfectly squared off and not one foot forward. Again, this isn't a real human being coming at you in a high stress, violent and instantaneous situation.
Completely agree with you Greg. A first blow to the groin seems like a terrible idea. You have to hit a small area under pressure that can be easily missed or blocked, and possible interference from clothing. Then what? These guys make it look very easy striking a stationary dummy. Master Gary's response below says it all "when done right." The odds of "doing it right" are very slim against a moving aggressor. Sorry Gary, not impressed with your tactics.
Hello I have many different types some cost alot some not so much. You don't have to have a very expensive cane to be able to defend yourself you just need a good solid cane and you should be fine.
That first groin strike is the weakest strike you could use!!! Do you realize how mechanically weak you are with that motion? It's no different than doing a front dumbbell raise and most people can barely lift 10lbs.!
