Cannon Fodder GBC intro (with audio reconstructed from ROM rip)

Doing it properly. The audio in the game is horrible, as is the other video claiming to "restore" the audio. The audio was fixed/reconstructed by ripping the audio from the game ROM, touching it up a bit and syncing it better to the video footage.
Software used: BGB, home-made Python script, Adobe Audition, AVISynth, CamStudio lossless codec, VirtualDub, x264vfw.

the GBC port is NOT that good, but you have to give it credit for the intro scene; being able to fit a scene like that onto the game boy color is quite an amazing accomplishment.

Thanks for the comment. You might enjoy V/Vm's remix of Forever Young, as used in an unaired commercial for Playstation. It didn't. It sounded like a complete mess in the game due to a bug. This reproduced from the raw data in the ROM and the GBC could have produced something very close to this with the right code.

@@Gameboygenius From what I heard, the sample rate for the GBC waveform channel was not set correctly for the fmv audio, causing it to come out all glitchy. I wonder if someone could make a patch for the rom fixing this issue...
@videogameobsession

@@Gameboygenius I thought it was fine when running on actual hardware, but buggy on most emulators. Many other games were, or are still like that, on some emulators. Such as Earthworm Jim, and Clay Fighters on the SNES. It'd often do to the developers using clever "non-SDK" tricks to get more out of a particular system. I have the cart and don't recall it being as bad as some of the other videos showing it (obviously running via emulation). I guess I should dig out a GBC and run it someday.
@Gameboygenius
@Gameboygenius Год назад
@@videogameobsession I've analyzed the code and also acquired a real cartridge running on real hardware to make sure there wasn't something I was missing, but it really is that bad. The issue is that the code for reloading the wave buffer is mistimed, so some parts of the waveform are shifted, creating this unique type of distortion. What might come into play psychologically is that the crappy little speaker on a GBC does wonders to lower your expectations of what it should sound like. I'm hoping to do a video/article at some point explaining this in more technical detail.

The Shadowgunner: No, the GBC didn't compress. There's a bug in the audio playback routine. The audio in this video is reconstructed from what's actually in the ROM. It should have been possible for them to fix the issue.

The graphics in the intro are INCREDIBLE for the gbc The audio had an pretty low quality. If you look at the other gbc games then its not hard to say this game aged pretty well.
@cube2fox
@cube2fox 6 лет назад
People pointed out the audio was fine on original hardware, it just doesn't work on emulators. Somebody should do a recording of the intro using a Gameboy Player (GameCube add-on for playing GBA games).
@Nikku4211
@Nikku4211 6 лет назад
Or, they can do a(n audio-only) recording from a real Gameboy Colour or Advance through a wire that connects the headphone port with the microphone port on any computer that has that.
@Gameboygenius
@Gameboygenius 6 лет назад
I finally got around to testing this on hardware and, no, the audio is still distorted. There really isn't anything about a flashcart that should be able to create this issue, but I ordered a genuine cart on eBay as well just to settle it for certain. Btw, GBA (The GB Player is a GBA inside) would be bad for doing the recording. Apart from the audio problem in Cannon Fodder, almost all games with wave playback will sound distorted on GBA due to how GBA hardware works.
@cube2fox
@cube2fox 6 лет назад
@@Gameboygenius There seems to be a misunderstanding. Nobody says flash carts have anything to do with the horrible audio. I was talking about emulators. Those seem to be responsible for the extremely bad audio of the intro. Of course on a real GBA it will not sound as good as in your ripped version. But (this is the claim) much better than on emulators. Someone on video by minimme actually uploaded a microphone recording of an GBA playing the intro and it sounded much better than on emulators. I try to find the comment.
@cube2fox
@cube2fox 6 лет назад
Argh. I can't find it anymore. Someone said it could also be a difference between GBA and real GBC hardware...
@Gameboygenius
@Gameboygenius 6 лет назад
@@cube2fox the flashcart remark was just a caveat emptor because I don't have a real cart to test with (yet). Though my preliminary verdict is that it actually sounds the same on hardware and that it's not just an emulation bug.

@Gameboygenius
@Gameboygenius 10 месяцев назад
It's extracted from the ROM. The data is all there in this quality. It's 4 bit audio and I don't remember the sample rate off the top of my head. Yes, it's a synch problem. It could definitely be played back with more or less the same quality on real hardware if there's no video playback that competes for CPU power.

Wow now that’s something really interesting,but check tarzan wich does have good pcm audio while running the main game at the same time, Now about that extracted audio sample,i suppose those audio samples in the genesis version suffered the same fate of sounding bad,not because of it’s recirding quality but because of a poor sound engine wich did had synch problems i suppose???

The original is painful to listen to because the GBC had no real sample channel like the NES or SNES did. They had to create it using the 4 main channels (Square 1 and 2, Wave, and Noise) to give the illusion of a sample, which is pretty damn impressive.
