Today we take a look at the Cannonball 2406 2020KV motors by Catalyst Machineworks. These motors offer something new by utilizing a 2406 stator size. The wider stator in theory should offer additional torque to the motor, while also helping to improve efficiency. Let's take these guys out to the track and put them to the only test that matters.

I am loving the cannonballs so far. On 5s theyre great for efficiency and on 6s they absolutely send

They are great motors. Very versatile, very efficient, very durable. It just didn't get me around the track quite as fast as my normal setup.

Yeah, that KV range on 5S is actually pretty lit for endurance racing, or just general flying - then you can turn up the volume on 6S and absolutely shred.

That was a very fair test you gave them.

I really enjoy that test video. I wont be upgrading any gear because I cant yet push mine to the max but love to see these videos from you. I really would enjoy just watching your dvr with music in the background and would love to see more videos like that even if they have no purpose to it but flying. You kill it around the track!!!

Thank you brother! Do you follow my facebook page by chance? I post DVR with music occasionally there.

Do you think a throttle cap would be more beneficial on these than your Talons?

...agreed about the 2000+kv being 5S territory... thx nice one

Sick flying, dude! Really impressive motors! 😃 But I totally agree, each and everyone has a different flying style. I bet this motors are going to be perfect for someone. 😊

Considering the motor temps, maybe the solution is 2200kv 2406?
@JohnEFly

I don't agree. Honestly, Betaflight 4.1 with RPM filtering is a game changer with motor temps anyways. They are nothing like earlier versions, or heaven forbid FlightOne/Falco. If anything these motors may benefit from less KV. They are extremely powerful and responsive, they don't need more KV IMO.

@@JohnEFly Definitely sounds like a candidate where motor output & throttle limiting might actually have a sweet spot - but it would be narrower (i.e. 85-90% of what you're used to on the Talons) - I know you're taking stuff closer to limit, but I think the wider stator really provides more flexibility in terms of prop selection that will tune up beautifully, since wider stators seem (to me) to handle props with more chord out by the endpoint a lot better, while 2207's tend to need more taper to really feel good (but pairs well with those motors having most of their power up top).

John E Fly I need to try bf4.1 soon I keep hearing great things. But I just got on FalcoX a week and a half ago and have had some great luck with it and it definitely helped my racing out at least on my setup. At our test n tune Day when I first set it up I dropped 4 seconds off my lap times. Some just don’t like it and can’t get it dialed in but even on regular fl1 I had my setup pretty dialed in. but to each their own keep it up man 👍👍

Huge motor! I’d def be nervous to try some that big on a track. I’d love them for 6” freestyle if the kv were just a little lower but a throttle cap could always work. It definitely looked like you had a little extra control on the track and maybe a little more speed too in some sections, maybe too much in some areas. But heck I’m just now getting used to some 2207 1750’s so I couldn’t even imagine a 2406 2000kv motor on a track wow. You made it look easy man!

Just seemed like you need more time on them. The power had you over shooting from what it looked like. I bet with a few days of runs you can be just as fast if not a little faster once you get used to the throttle curve. You try a throttle cap at all to warm up?

I spent 3 days testing these motors. At one point I had roughly 50-60 straight packs on these motors. The 3rd day was completely focused on throttle caps. I was thinking much the same thing you are. I started at 60%, and worked through 70% then 80% and then I broke the camera in a crash. Rather than fix the camera I put up the Talon quad on 80% and my first pack was immediately faster than anything I had done all day on the Cannonball. It had been over a week since I flew the Talons at that point. Then after I put in more packs on the Talons the difference just grew. I agree on paper, I think the Cannonballs should be more capable. However, for whatever reason my flying style seems to match the characteristics of the Talons, and I can consistently get around the track faster. I found this whole experience extremely interesting.

I don't think it was quite the simple - the amount of 'push' mid-turn is definitely different, it's like the have lots of bottom end... which in this one just means it has a different amount of lateral drift, and that takes me frickin forever to get used to - when I have a quad that natually floats the 'right' amount for how I fly, I just fly faster, even if that quad is an objectively slow turd.

Is the canonball powerplay and talon motors FS DVR? (do they both have same camera?)
@JohnEFly
@JohnEFly 4 года назад
Most of the Cannonball is the PowerPlay (The day 1 stuff is all Fatshark). All of the Talon stuff is Fatshark. Both are using Runcam Racer 2 1.8mm lenses.

I think the difference comes down to a lot of little things which add up to racing style - stuff I'm sure Gabby would realate to in the same terms Rob Wilson (the driver coach) would describe for things like as corner entry approach (attacking versus allowing rotation and load distribution before commiting), apex management (geometrically ideal versus momentum-biased), line selection (immediate apex or setup-biased). Sounds over-complicated, but that puts you in different flight regimes for the motors when you're really on the limit, and different motor/prop combinations are going to handle that better - couple in the tricky fact that we're trying to 'feel' response of the quad through a damped-latent system there's going to be extra weight placed on how closely the image is to what we were expecting to see frame-to-frame, which we describe as being 'locked in', that contributes to pace and consistency a lot more than outright performance tends to, which wider stators as a whole are going to do really well at. Put that all together, and this is a super-flexible motor to achieve that, and as somebody who has been all about people building very flexible quads, I'd still say these motors rock for somebody who hasn't already settled on what they want. Build these on a 6" frame, and no matter what you'll have an excellent quad for a variety of uses - even on 4S these do impressive things.
