Canon 70D Hands-On Field Test 

Image quality, dynamic range, iso performance, resolution, D7100 crushes 70D, 7d & 7dmkII. Only D7100 is a bit slower camera (shutter lag, buffer, burst)

CEEPMDEE I just sold my D7100 on Ebay for a 70D. I think the exact opposite of your summary. Some people like Toyota and some like Subaru. Some like BMW over Audi. But all are great products. It's just personal preference but both cameras are great.

Jon W Yes everyone is entitled to choice and opinion but what CEEP stated was fact. The D7100 is superior in all those tested areas.

Bump up your bitrate in post when you render RU-vid compresses the files. Reasons if it looks like quality is lost from your video now if it's your camera to your laptop your speaking of then it's your eating a on your camera. That could be a lot of things causing that. Possibly your iso settings bump that down 200 to get less noise in your video

Yes I think the 70D is the best choice on the market today for stills and videos combined. If you're not in a rush and have a big pocket book the new Canon 7D mark 2 should be with us this year and as a full frame camera will probably out perform the 70D overall.

If it must be a Canon then I'd go with this camera and either a 15-85mm lens or a 24-105mm as they are great for video. I'd have a look at the Sony A6000 and 18-105 though.

Maharshi Patel Whatever is needed for the situation. If you want the best colordept and noise performance you need to go down to the base ISO of the sensor. I belief that the 70D has that at ISO 100. But what if you are shooting when it is darker or when for instance you shoot sport and you REQUIRE 1/400 of exposure. Or close to.. guess what you raise the ISO and accept the extra noise. Lets say that you shoot a model and the situation allows to use Off camera illumination or a flash. Well then shooting ISO 100 or 200 or depending on how far the light sensitivity reaches 400 is probably highly possible. There is a reason for why I say that it isn't always ISO 100 because it depends on how far the light sensitivity reaches. A flash or a light has a certain amount of lumen it can give. And beyond that it gets darker again. But that is a whole different story! But lets say you want it as natural as possible and not add flash. A model sitting in window where the sunlight shines upon her as part of her is in the shadows and another part is in the light. A straight on flash would destroy that special light situation. So you might have to shoot with slightly higher ISO then you desire just to get it right. That or get a tripod... in that case you should be able to keep the ISO settings lower. When it comes to ISO there is no straight answer. Whatever you can get to work for the situation at hand. There are many situations and many causes that might require you to raise up the ISO and hence lower image quality. But it is better to get THE PICTURE then to get moved image. You can in software lower noise, noise reduction is quite possible later on. But you can't reduce a MOVED picture.

I am no expert but it is said that the nikon 7100 performs better in stills and the canon 70d performs better in video. Canon was emphasizing video when the 70d was being released. However, I would expect the 70d to be a bit better just because of the 7fps would capture lots more.

hi julian. i have a t3i right now. it is a great camara...the video quality is really good....BUT...it does not have the autofocus. it can be a pain to have to focus everytime your subject moves. i just put an order to buy a 70D just for that autofocus reason. you basically turn on the camara and the camara will do the rest. i know it costs more, but in the long run it will be cheaper. i wish i had known more about the 70D before I bought the t3i. but if money is the issue, the t3i is great for cinematic look. good luck!

i been using my 70d with sigma 70-200 f2.8 and it's performing pretty good even in low lights settings.
