Canon eos 550d - My Thoughts | Great Budget DSLR under €80

Yeah, I will not deny how powerful smartphone cameras has come but there are still certain physical limitations that bigger sensor cameras still can do that smaller cameras (especially in the smartphones) can’t. Furthermore, this camera will also allow you to experiment in different looks as well as tryout different perspectives. I am sure you’ll be able to produce great results with it. I would not say any cellphone has better color accuracy than DSLR.. also the organic look. Smartphones sharpnes is fake , looks bad. The only thing I dislike about this reflex camera is the moire issue

The colour is accurate enough and response quite well for editing. :-) I mainly just either use my Macbook's screen or my iMac, so I don't have a lot of experience with many monitor. Yeah, I do agree that there are a lot of limitations with this camera and when compare it to other offerings, this might not really be a compelling camera to consider. That said, considering the price point and also the fact that it still takes good pictures and will allow new photographers to learn about photography, it is still a good enough camera in my opinion. Sure, it might be a serious camera but when work with it properly, it still can deliver some serious images as well (of course, with a bit of extra patient and effort into it especially when compared to some of the newer options out there). Yeah, the auto white balance is still a bit off from time to time with this camera which can be a little bit annoying at times. But I guess shooting in RAW might be nice because you will always be able to adjust the white balance later (sure, it's an extra step but I think manually adjust your white balance later in post might make the results even nicer at times). It would actually be a great lens to pair up with this camera too since it really allows a lot of light into the sensor thus being able to take better pictures in lowlight and also able to take pictures with nicer blurry backgrounds. You can definitely install magic lantern on this camera but I am not so sure about the RAW capabilities though as the sensor is still not that great for fast readouts... I think if you really want Magic Lantern RAW, something like the 5d mark iii would be a much better option since the sensor has a much faster readout as well as the processor is able to deliver a higher bit rate thus giving you a much cleaner file with less artificial effects... Furthermore, the 5d mark iii is now dropping a lot in price... So you much have some luck getting a good condition as well. you can instal magic lanter but the processor cant handle more than 4, 6 seconds of Raw video. A tested it recording RAw at 22 FPS, 1773x900 , I think, resolution and that was was I got, 5 seconds of RAW video.. and tested full HD RAW but could only get 2 seconds jajaja.. BUT magic lanter also unlock a lot of other features for photo, like intervalometer, ettr, dual iso photos, sensor as a trigger etc etc

I would say that it really depends on what you do and your expectations. For example, the Samsung galaxy S10 and also any modern flagship smartphones will be better at delivering computational photography results as well as produces results that looks better straight out of the camera due to computational photography. That said, the 550D will be better in the way that it can change lenses thus being able to give you different perspectives. Furthermore, with the bigger sensor, the 550d will be able to deliver better and more natural blurry backgrounds. The 550d's files will also be more robust to edit later in post (should you wish to do so). With more manual controls on the 550d, will be able to control the camera more than most flagship smart phones as well. That said, if you just want to snap photos with accurate autofocusing system accurate white balance and also great dynamic range and colours straight from the camera, then modern smartphones would be your better choice. However, if you like to take pictures, experiment and learn, then I think the 550D would be a better option... I think that it really depends on what you are focusing on. I personally would recommend the 10-18mm stm, it's a nice fun ultra-wide angle lens that is very sharp, portable and will give you unique perspectives and it's also really affordable as well. I would also recommend 35mm and the 17-55mm f/2.8. They are really nice and versatile lens to use for the 550d. :-) Hope that helps. Hi, congrats on the camera and also glad to hear that you are liking the camera. With regards to the lens question, I don’t think that there is a perfect lens and it also really depends on what you do. If there is a lens that I can recommend as a versatile lens, I would say the Ef-s 17-55mm 2.8 because it is a sharp glass that has an aperture of 2.8 throughout the range. That means that you can also take pictures in lower lighting condition and it is also easy to achieve a bit of natural background as well. But there are other lenses to consider as well such as; 50mm 1.8, 11-18mm stm and 24mm stm. I think that really depends on what you do at the end of the day since both cameras are very different and offers different convenience factors. So the iPhone would be more powerful if you want the images to look as good as possible straight out of the camera since the iPhone has the ability to do computational photography right at the moment when you take the photo. However, if you like to experiment with different looks, such as using different lenses to capture different perspectives and effects that looks more natural, then a proper camera like the 550d would be a better choice. Furthermore, you will have the benefit of learning about photography and how to set certain settings over time so that you can be more creative and achieve the results that you want better than letting something like a smart phone decides the look for you. The files from the 550d is also more robust, so if you would like to edit/manipulate the images later in post, then the 550d would still be a better option to go for as well. So now it really depends on your priorities on what is more important to you and what you will most likely do in different photography scenarios. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages, that said, you still can also just use both of them depending on the scenario. Hope that helps. There is an iso button on the top right of the camera near the shutter button and the mode dial. By pressing that button you can change the iso setting whether you are in photography mode or video mode. Hi, no need to say sorry, don’t worry. There are many different ways to check secondhand cameras. My very first stage of checking is of course the overall condition, not only at the scratches, cracks (if any) but also shine a light into certain areas to see if there is any fungi. I then I also check for the shutter count then also see if all buttons responds properly with no delays. I then test the functions of the camera to see if they respond as advertised. That would be my first stage, if the camera passes this stage, I just take test shots to see if there are any problems with the sensor… But if you’re looking at second hand options online, I would still recommend look at the overall condition to judge how good this cameras was taken care of. Then look at the shutter count the see the description and judge it as best as you can. In most cases you should be able to ask certain uncertain questions with the seller. I personally think that the Canon eos 550D is more than capable enough to learn photography with. All the basics of photography setting from learning about aperture, ISO to shutter speed is all within this camera. Furthermore, once you have learned quite a bit about photography already and starting shooting in RAW you can really explore even more capabilities of the image quality that this camera can really deliver... You may have to invest a little bit more in the lens to be able to get different perspectives and also to be able to shoot in different lighting conditions. But overall, this camera is still a good camera that you can even shooting professionally with. I shot some professional contents back in the days as well, so don't be discouraged be the age or the fact that there are many modern cameras camera out there that has more features... Because it doesn't degrade this camera by any means... It just means that the newer cameras would make things more convenient but the 550D is still a very good camera and I think that those who overlook/over-judge this camera right away that it will not teach you photography doesn't know anything about photography because even cameras from the film era will still be able to teach you photography. Yeah, I can totally understand, taking photos with a camera has a very feel and intention to when taking photos with a smartphone. Of course, smart phones are still very capable at delivering great image quality but the look, the feel, the colours and everything just feels very different. I am glad to hear that you are getting back to using this camera and starting to experiment with it as well. I think that sometimes the softness do just comes from the characteristics of the lens itself or it can also be using the widest aperture of the lens as the widest aperture tends to have the most softness, especially with older lenses. Also, it is possible that since the camera sensor is practically cropping into the resolution of the lens (as those lenses were meant for full frame) and further magnifying it with the high resolution of the sensor, it could also magnify the softness as well as many other flaws of the lens (if that made sense)... But I am glad that you are still experimenting and the lenses you have are very common as well as known for their unique characters too. I am sure you'll produce great results with them! I think that it might be best to ask about the shutter count on the camera. If the camera does not have a high shutter count then it would be a good buy:-)

I think both options sounds good and there are many lenses available for both Nikon and canon options. I would lean towards canon though because of the skin tones and colour science it can produce. Furthermore a bit more manual controls for video mode. That said, you can’t go wrong with both options either. I think it might just be good to check the condition of the camera is this case such as is the viewfinder clean, are there any dust spots on the sensor, are the rubbers still the same or are they slowly deteriorating, etc. Hope that helps and good luck with the system you go for!

@@AB_2311 Canon 550D can only display shutter count after installing "MAGIC LANTERN" firmware. Good lens from Canon are cheaper than Nikon. I got the NEW 15-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM and used 55-250mm F-5.6 IS STM for very low price through ebay. ALWAYS go for newer IS STM models (image stabilsation and Stepper motor).

The lens that I was holding is the Canon ef 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens. There are quite a lot of cheap lenses that you can get for this camera, it really depends on what you want to shoot really. On top of my head I can think of right now would be lenses like the canon ef 50mm f/1.8, canon ef-s 10-18mm stm, canon ef-s 24mm, Tokina 11-18mm f/2.8 and so on… Hope that helps. I would personally go with the 600d over the 550d because of the articulating screen and more manual controls in video mode. Despite having pretty much the same sensor, the lowlight capability is a tiny bit cleaner than the 550D's images. That said, if you don't shoot video at all and if the articulating screen is not important to you, then you can save a bit of money by going for the 550D. Hope that helps a bit. Yeah, I got it for under 80 euros. Usually if you have enough patience, you can bid on ebay and you can most of the time get it under 80 euros. However, the "buy it now" option tends to be a little bit more expensive (most of the are going between 90-150 euros... which is way too much for this camera in my opinion)...

Regarding aperture priority in video mode, sometimes I am in situations where I don’t have time to set everything manually, so what I like to do on my 5d mark iii, 1DX, R5, etc. is to set my limit on auto ISO and shutter speed in case when I use aperture priority. I like to have full control of my depth of field regardless of situation. So having aperture priority in video would greatly make my video workflow much more efficient as well as practical. @@DavidCuhls I guess you’re a photographer and not a videographer. Video is not something you want adjusting automatically as your filming. Unless it’s for shits and giggles, you have your 180 rule which means your shutter should always be set to double your frame rate. Aperture, I couldn’t see why you would want that adjusting as your filming. At the very least if you’re running and gunning it should be your ISO that is set to auto. Shutter and aperture you set it and forget it unless you want to isolate your subject in certain shots

Here in Western and Northern Europe, it is usually under 80 euros when bidding for the camera (but a bit more when you go for the "buy it now" option). As I said a few times, if you have the patience to wait rather than going for the "buy it now" option, it can save you some money. However, this also depends on the region of the world as camera values in different regions are not the same... I am sorry if I have mislead any information....
