I bought this camera about 5-6 years ago but there weren’t many videos on it. Now in the past 2 years tons of videos have popped up, so I guess I made the right choice. Zeek is definitely worth checking out, his stuff looks like it was shot on really expensive cinema cameras, and some of it is stunning
I got mine in 2013 at B&H for a whopping $350. The M and the 18-55 lens. It had been about $1000 USD. The reviewers trashed it pretty bad when it came out. The AF left a lot to be desired. A firmware update helped it a lot. It has a hybrid on sensor AF that's like partial dual pixel. One of the things you can do that I like is touching the screen to pull focus focus from one area to another. This is nice with a fast lens like the 22mm f2. Great for street photography too. Nobody will give you a second glance. When I'm out with my EOS R and big white 100-400L sometimes it attracts attention that I don't want. Liked and subscribed! 🙂
I just bought one, found one as-new with the 22mm/f2 STM and got it for 200e. Biggest reason for me is that it's small and looks inoffensive, and that changes how ppl react to it. I have several video cameras but I now 'warn' ppl when I'm out with the big cameras because of how ppl react. Most of the time I'm not even recording, just testing out settings and framing for later, and ppl won't believe me and some even threaten etc.
I really wish the camera manufacturers would take note of this and offer some lower priced options with these capabilities. The Sigma FP is really the first camera to 'get it', as well as the BMPCC cameras to an extent (I think CinemaDMG is superior). Although... this is 14bit 4:4:4 raw, which is insane. And quite honestly, if someone like panasonic would just release their source code so Magic Lantern could hack it, they'd sell even more cameras, looks like Canon survived it. It would not hurt them one bit. And it also shows how much the programmers squander the hardware capabilities of these cameras. Maybe the reasons are battery life, smaller file sizes, stability, and protecting their cinema line. There's still audience for maxed out settings like this. Again, 14 bit color in a point and shoot camera from 2012. Imagine the hackable capabilities in something like the S5
I just bought the canon eos m today. I have the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K and love the quality but it's not very portable friendly and is heavy. I know the EOS M will look great with the Sigma 18-35 lens I already have.
Great Video. I bought the eos m a couple of month ago. I have been testing it out quite a bit so far. Biggest thing for me is the post-processing. There is so much to learn. But the results are great and my family movies really look next level now. Once I feel 100% comfortable using all the features I will use it to film some mtb contend for my channel.
Thanks so much!! Yeah, the post processing was one of the biggest hurdles for me too in feeling really comfortable in shooting with the camera. I would check out Zeek’s channel, he’s got really good stuff about post production with the eos m.

I'd love to see an attempt at narrative work with the eos m. Zeek does fantastic stuff but he sticks to b-roll probably for good reason. I'm not convinced that the camera will be stable enough for us to not lose our minds when it comes to capturing actors. 😅
please my magic lantern on eos m doesn't show " presets, custom mode, raw video..." in movie settings menu. it shows only " Bit Rate, Rec keys .... " can you help me please ?

I'm looking this camera as a B cam for some projects and I want to ask you if in 1080p can make continuous long video, I'm making interviews and I need more than 1 hour of continuous recording. I have been searching about this but I don't find nothing about it. You know if it's possible?
That's great! It's an awesome little camera. There's a bit of a learning curve with Magic Lantern, but once you get the hang of it you can get some great video with this camera.
Hey bud. Thanks so much for your videos on the EOS M. I just wanted to know, how do you use auto focus using Magic Lantern RAW. When I half press the shutter it doesn't work. Touching the screen doesn't work as well. The only way so far I've found is using manual focus but not sure if you can use autofocus?
the Sony alpha A5100 is another great camera, doesnt have any kind of 'raw' sytem but the sony XAVC S video system that has 10-bit color, at good resolution and good framerates, but not on the canon eos M price point, on MPB around 250-350$

Nice video! I have been thinking about buying one also been shooting on the M50 and I'm so happy with the footage i can get out of it. What is your view on the 6D do you think it would give the same results with ML there is not so much information about it. It seems most people go for the m1 or 2 and not the 6d in combo with ML. Looking forward to see more videos
It depends on the SD card. With the SanDisk Extreme Pro I can record 2.5k 14bit RAW forever. (or untill the card is full). If i shoot 4k i have to step down to 10bit to even shoot for about 20seconds.
I just got me a eos m on 12/14/21 and I have a huge problem and maybe someone here can help me. My camera firmware is 2.0.3 and ik m trying to find and download firmware 2.0.2 because magic lantern do not have a version for 2.0.3. Can someone tell me where i can find the firmware so i can downgrade to 2.0.2 eos m firmware? Im been looking but some site are other programs to download. Probably spyware. Anyone had or have this problem?
How can I install the Magic Lantern for Canon 800D camera because there is no such version for the camera on the Magic Lantern website, please help me if necessary
To my knowledge there is not build of Magic Lantern to support the 800D. Most Magic Lantern builds are made for older cameras. I do know the 700D is supported by Magic Lantern and there is an active community around that camera. Hope this helps!
It can shoot 3K/4K technically but it's not super reliable and not stable enough to really get a lot of use out of it. But shooting 2K and 2.5K works great and it's easy to upscale to 4K.
The file sizes depend on how you transcode the mlv files in post, whether you make them pro res files or cinema DNG files. I usually use a 64gb card and shooting in 1080p I think I could easily get 30-40mins. Hope this helps!
So why can't you shoot Raw format with any other M-series models? Or why are the developers of magic lantern not porting the software to more recent models? What's the deal with this 10-year old camera that makes it so special for software developers?
