Thanks man! Just best explanation. I assumed that pressing it would reduce the field of sharpness and could not understand why nothing changes when the aperture is fully open. Finally figured it out.

I still don't understand why the button even exists, I just set mine to Exposure+DOF for display simulation, it always reflects what the image will look like. Unsure why Canon insist on setting the default to just Exposure SIM.

Canon should display the focal distance as well as the expected depth of field in cm / m... Don't know why they don't implement that...

Yes! There is! It's extremely untuitive. Menu > Camera (the red one) > Tab 9 > Display Simulation, and change it to Exposure+DOF (SIM) mode, which simulates both exposure and depth-of-field by default. I suspect this isn't the default because it requires more compute power and therefore might theoretically limit your battery life. However, I always carry an extra battery, so I leave the DOF simulation always set, and rebound the DOF button to "Maximize screen brightness" instead.

@@ColinMcMillen Unfortunately it works only at R6 mk II because the first version haven't this item in the menu
