Correction: R8's 4K 60 recording limit is not 30 mins, it's 2 hours like the other modes.

True. Unfortunately the practical limit of 4k60 is around 24 mins on the R8 due to overheating.

I'm a very happy R7 owner. The R8 has so many compromises. The battery is easily the biggest, but also there is no shutter to close while the R7 closes its shutter when shut down so you can swap lenses with more piece of mind. R7 has 3 custom modes (each for video and photos) and the R8 has 2. IBIS can actually be a liability for video but it's good for photos.

The shutter issue can be „fixed“ by starting manual sensor cleaning and shutting it off during the process. The lens changing problems i dont have, except for the RF 800 F11 i only use EF (S) lenses with a Meike Filter adapter, i change lenses whenever i want without caring at all.

I'm doing my review tomorrow. I just picked up an R8 for my wife we were going to send it back because I found the R6 for $1,699! Being an R5 shooter for the last 3 years I know the best way to set up the camera from weddings to Wildlife. I have to say that the R8 is an absolutely amazing camera and coming from the R5. We took it out of the box just to look at it and after playing with it 45 minutes I was astonished. It has all the little settings that took me about 18 months to figure out on the Canon R5 pretty much ready to go on the R8. Came and did a phenomenal job with this menu system and with the plethora of features. All I can say is we will not be returning it and I'm glad that my wife has a camera that we can do everything from bird photography. Not only Stills but birds in flight! She's coming from the Canon RP and this is a huge step up because I honestly think that for her situation from doing weddings, wildlife, and a lot of bird photography that we do for fun this is a perfect fit. I'm actually a little envious even though I have the Canon R5

@@carlosr.2027 they are both great cameras. The R6 is had alot more PRO features. But, it all comes down to what's best for you. For instance me personally I would pick the R6 Mark 1. Now my wife on the other hand which it's her first year for tography the R8 is a lot better for her because it's a Snappy and faster autofocus. It is a newer autofocus system. Not to say that the R5 and R6 have crappy systems. They are phenomenal but they are also way more customizable. And you also get to SD card slots. In the end they both are very feature-rich. I hope some of this helps.

I own the R8 and love it. While the battery is smaller but who really doesn’t own a few batteries even on the bigger rigs with bigger batteries. The IBIS to me isn’t a big deal with most (not all) RF lenses already having image stabilization that mitigates the lack of it in body. I bought the regular grip for the bottom of the camera and feels great. Very happy thus far with this new powerhouse.

Great review, thanks. Something that is almost never talked about when comparing Canon FF and APS-C cameras is "TCO". All existing EF-S lenses work perfectly on the R7 at full 32Mpix resolution. That means on R7/R10/R50 you can use all the inexpensive yet great EF-S lenses (24mm F2.8, 60mm F2.8, 10-18mm, 55-250mm, 18-135mm ...). Whereas on FF, you might probably end up spending much more on FF lenses, especially if you need to match the total range "10-250mm" of Canon EF-S lenses (16-400mm equiv. FF) at native resolution (EF-S lenses produce heavily cropped images on FF). So, my 2 cents: if you are on a budget and not a professional, think carefully about the cost of lenses you will need when deciding about the camera body you want to buy. I totally agree with FF being much better in low light situations but, in general, APS-C quality/price ratio is much higher than on FF. Ken Rockwell has written about it for more than a decade. Ask yourself : "What percentage of pictures will I take in low light situations? 10% ? Maybe I'd better invest in lighting gear. Do I need only one lens or will I buy many ? Will I really print in huge sizes ? Do I need super fast F1.2 lenses ?". In the end, you might reconsider your choice and go for APS-C.

I shoot 99.99% of the time at ISO 12,800 to 25,600 without flash on my EOS R. I shoot my pets and the EOS R doesn't focus on animal eyes. When I use my Canon 600EX II-RT speedlight angled from a ceiling or wall, the ISO won't go above 1600. But I don't want to always have to use speedlight. So for me it has to be R8 or R6 Mark II. Or even a used R6. And leave my EOS R for shooting outdoors during the day.

Hi HRJ, great video. I am a happy owner of R6 M2 and i was checking out which one is preferable to buy as a secondary camera so i can use both simultaneously with my RF lense 24-70 f2.8. Happy to find out that R8 processor is like R6 but my concern is the battery type and the one card slot. So my question is which is better for action sports (basketball preferable) to use with my RF lense 24-70 F.2.8. (On my R6 i use 70-200 F2,8 and I am very satisfied with the result).

For the past week I'm deciding which to buy, R8 and R7. Last May 1, just decided to purchase the R8 over the R7. Love the images I produced. The reason why I chose R8 is because it's a full frame camera and have a sensor like the R6 Mark II. IBIS, card slot and battery are no big deal for me. The mechanical shutter is the only big deal for me that lacks on the R8. My lenses are all designed for full frame that's why I went with R8.

@adamyoung3770 Год назад
Just a nit pick, but I think as reviewers, you've got to stop calling full frame an 'upgrade' as it implies that all crop sensor cameras are a downgrade. That isn't true. You said it yourself in the review - The R7, being a crop sensor camera, is for a particular user. It is a tool, for a specific job. Would you say a phillips screw driver is a downgrade to a flat head? In a fully controlled environment/situation, where the subject is guaranteed to fill the frame, a full frame will most likely beat an APSC camera, however, unless you're in the 45MP territory, by the time you've cropped a full frame image to match that of an APSC, the differences in image quality, mainly due to ISO performance, can hand the advantage to the APSC, especially if a bigger print is needed.

I'm not a fan of the RF-S lineup for two main reasons: very limited native lens selection, 1.6x crop instead of 1.5x. R7 also has too many megapixels leading to poor lowlight performance and slow readout. R8 is just the perfect entry-level hybrid full-frame camera with very balanced performance.

If your available glass is crop frame, grabbing an R8 means having to sell all of it to pay an arm and a knee for full frame lenses, and all of that for a glorified R10 body. It's easy to drool over the full frame sensor but it also costs more to use it.

I already have an R10 that I've kitted out to be a cinema camera for my needs, and I'm looking for an A cam to have the R10 be the B cam in shoots. The R8 has some alluring features for the price but honestly, someone like me has 3 avenues. 1. Save up and go for an R6 II, of course selling my crop frame ef glass along the way, cost 2500 for the body and say another 2 to 3 grand to make up replacing the lenses with full frame equivalents (keeping some crop frame lenses for the B cam) 2. Go for an R8 and do the same thing regarding the lenses as above 3. Go for an R7, which is as feature rich as an R6, without having to spend anything on new lenses since I'll be able to interchange them between it and the R10. I'll just buy a focal reducer. Considering a focal reducer and the fact I have a lot of crop frame really fast glass that gains even more aperture from a such reducer, an R7 feels more appropriate. Besides, bigger battery, IBIS, a more substantial body, 2 card slots etc just add more. The decision for a body really depends on one's circumstances, it's dumb to me when I see so many people downplay how good the R7 is just cause "hurr not ff".

I'm an enthusiastic photography hobbiest. I've been a Nikon DSLR DX shooter since 2004. Prior to that, I shot 35mm film with the old Minolta Maxxum series. I've never owned (only once rented) a full-frame DSLR (Nikon D750 FX), nor have I ever used a modern digital mirrorless camera. The closest I've ever come to mirrorless is my ten-year old Sony DSC-RX100m3 (a great little pocket-sized point-&-shoot digital camera. I've given all of my Nikon DSLR gear to my youngest child (daughter) for her 18th birthday / Christmas present - she's the only one of my children who ever showed any interest in photography, and she actually expressed a strong desire for my Nikon DSLR gear when I started my eBay listings to sell it off. She'd already been making use of it to shoot a lot of her H.S. club activities and sporting events. I must say she does have a pretty darned good photographic eye. Now, I'm in the market for Canon mirrorless digital photography gear. I'm a lot more interested in still photography over video, but I do want good video capability. I've been leaning heavily towards full-framed vs. APS-C cropped senor cameras, as I want better low-light performance and more depth-of-field control. I think I want the Canon EOS R6m2, but I have to admit that given all my Nikon DSLR DX experience, the EOS R7 does intrigue me, too. I shoot all kinds of subjects, but mostly all types of scenic landscapes, people, sports, a lot indoors and in the evening. Any recommendations?

Canon r8 has 30minute recording limit, despite the fact that it can be powered externally. It cuts the usb feed artificially at 30minute mark. Re-initiating the usb recording allows the recording to restart another 30minute limit. This limit is artificial and has nothing to do with heat. So in theory, it can record unlimited, but every 30minute mark, a manual intervention is required. There is a video about it in youtube.

It's been 4 months, so you might have already pulled the trigger on one, but I agree with the poster. The R7 sounds like the right camera. A full frame is generally better in low light, but mainly because of the higher ISOs you need to expose correctly - - and it's these higher ISO settings that introduce more noise in the smaller crop sensor cameras like the R7 has (though it is FAR better than older crop sensors). It's important to understand that shooting in low light in and of itself is not the issue; it's the settings the camera must be set at to capture the scene in low light that becomes the issue. If your subject is a city, buildings, lights, etc. - - subjects that aren't moving, then you don't need high ISO settings to capture those scenes. Throw the R7 on a tripod and use longer exposure times. It will be just as good as a full frame sensor. Now, if you're big into action photography as well - sports and wildlife you mention, then the R7 sounds like the right camera for you between the two. The R7 and R8 are almost identically priced in most markets, so I can understand how choosing between the two can be difficult. Understand that a full frame sensor adds a lot of cost to a camera, so the R8 must be giving up something else in order to come in at the same price as the R7. That would be features. The R7 is currently - - and likely will remain the flagship crop-sensor camera in Canon's mirrorless "R" line (Just like the 7D was in the DSLR lineup). All the features you find on the most high-end in the lineup - - - just with a crop sensor. Meanwhile, the R8 is an entry-level full frame mirrorless design. Bottom line, if action is what you like to shoot, I'd go with the R7 for sure. The R8 *_MIGHT_* have better image quality for other things like landscapes, portraits, things like that, but the R7 will do a fine job on things like that as well. The R7 will have a clear advantage in the action photography space. That's my two cents. Are the features more important to you, or is the image quality inherent in full frame sensors more important? Answer that, and you'll know which camera to get. If you want both image quality and features, you're gonna have to cough up about another grand!!

They are two different cameras - - - BUT they belong to the same R mirrorless line at the same price-point, so if you are working within a budget, it is absolutely appropriate that these two cameras be compared. If the cost is what you want to spend, it would be helpful to know the difference between the two cameras. You actually articulate perfectly the reason such a comparison is merited. Two cameras. Same product line (mirrorless R series). Same price. If you knew nothing about either one, wouldn't you want to know what the differences are, so you know which one is better for you?

It’s a good question, and I do wish I could get some compact fast primes for travel like I had on the M5. That said, I use the R7 in combination with my full frame R bodies and share lenses across them all. In all honesty I believe the R8 is built specific for those who want to shoot video. The specs are just good enough for video editing with uncropped 4k 10 bit color and clog. I am disappointed in the 24 megapixel sensor as I figured all of the R series would make the leap to 32 but I’m sure it will work fine with full frame.

So the question for me is: should I upgrade from the RP to the R8? Hmm 🤔
@lsamoa
@lsamoa Год назад
I'm in the same situation. At first I thought nah there isn't enough new/upgraded features to justify the price jump. The dynamic range difference is not that huge, the RP's AF is pretty good, and who needs to shoot so many frames a second? But then I found out about some details that aren't often mentioned, like aspect markers in video (so you can frame your videos in 1:1 to pano aspect ratios and even vertical, instead of being just stuck with 16:9 or having to guess how things will look like once cropped)... detection-only AF in video (no re-focusing to the background when your subject moves out of the frame)... dark/bright modes for multiple exposure comps... focus breathing compensation with certain lenses... live depth-of-field preview in EVF for photo instead of having to dedicate and each time press a button for it... chromatic abberation correction added to the RF lens correction profiles... These are actually very useful features that the RP doesn't have. But are they worth it? Does it make an actual difference in your photography process or is it simple enough to work around the RP's compared limitations? I'm still on the fence tbh.
@JayCatterson
@JayCatterson Год назад
@@lsamoa yes, exactly. As much as I’d love to get the R8, I find more value in buying a new lens. I just recently went all native RF lenses, and the image quality that the RP bangs out with native RF glass is excellent. Perhaps if I can get the R8 on sale and a good trade-in value for my RP, I’d buy it, but I can’t justify spending $2000 Canadian on it right now. (Meanwhile they still sell the RP for around $1200 CAD, which is a steal for a compact full frame).

@@JayCatterson Just to say that I tried the R8 yesterday and tbh I wasn't that impressed. It's more plasticky than the RP and the image IQ is the same. @JayCatterson
@JayCatterson Год назад
@@lsamoa well I guess that explains why the R8 is lighter than the RP! That’s crazy it felt more plasticky (read: cheap?). Anyway I’m still curious about it, but I’ll prob only buy it at this point if my RP all of a sudden dies and I need a new R series body. Thanks for letting me know!
