10th overall pick five years ago traded for a 4th round pick. Benning's big strength was supposed to be his drafting. In the first round over his years in Vancouver he had six top-ten picks: 2014 - 6th overall - Virtanen - bust, washed out of the league 2016 - 5th overall - Juolevi - bust, washed out of the league 2017 - 5th overall - Pettersson - hit 2018 - 7th overall - Hughes - hit 2019 - 10th overall - Podkolzin - traded for a 4th round pick, tracking to be a 4th liner/AHL tweener 2021 - 9th overall, traded to Arizona for OEL and Garland (one of the worst trades in franchise history) Benning had SIX top-ten picks in his seven years running the Canucks and he managed to find *two* NHL players. Absolutely brutal, franchise-ruining drafting. That the Canucks are decent again after 2.5 years of Rutherford and Alvin is a testament to their competence.
Should the Canucks win the Stanley Cup, in the next, say 3 or 4 seasons, Rutherford, I believe, would be the first GM in NHL history to win the Cup with 3 different teans.
And here’s an example of why I will NEVER believe in relying on tanking. The Blues have had three top 10 picks in the past 30+ years. They’ve mostly been just fine.
The other thing that the Podkolzin trade does for the Canucks is free up a million dollars under the cap for the next 2 seasons. It doesn't sound like much, but when you're closing in on the cap, it's something. Poolman is unlikely to be traded because that would require trading a higher than 4th round pick, so it gives the team a bit of wiggle room if they were to make a move to bring in a top 4 defenseman or see where they're at at the deadline.
Yeah, the only thing this means is that Aman or Di Giuseppe dont have to go on waivers, obviosly tocchet didnt see enough upside with podkolzin. No luck with the russians in Vancouver
I 100% agree. The oilers were WAY TO SOFT this entire playoffs. They got beaten up bigtime in every series physically and never pushed back to match. I'm not sure if it's the coaches or what?! Either way, mcdavid and draisaitl cannot take a beating like they did and get injured again next playoffs. Unless we dish out the same grit the other way. Kostin was decent at it. But a lucic/maroon/kassian type is such a benefit.
Podkolzin would have been lost to waivers after he didn't make the squad after training camp. This was a good move by the Canucks management to at least get the pick for him. Going to see more things like this happening in the league as the season nears.
@@heathclark318Pod is kinda a bust, he wasn't going to make the roster and he wouldn't have cleared waivers, here the Nucks got something and made Edmonton have some more headaches.
@@zept2170 I do get it... Just watched the team preview and can see it. He isnt going to get game time and blocks the way for some clearly better players and some that need a chance.
I recently looked at the history of first-round draft picks by the Vancouver Canucks. I don't think I've ever seen so many poor choices over decades (sorry, Canucks fans).
I like how Ottawa picks were part of both of these moves. First to reacquire the second to send the double offer sheets and then Ottawa’s 4th to get the player to replace Holloway.
Surprising only that he was traded to the Oilers. GM's tend to feel a lot less obligation to holding on the 1st round draft pick prospects of the previous regime, but it's a shame he didn't work out in Vancouver. One concern about Podkolzin is that he needs to learn to keep his head up more. About once a game he's in danger of being laid out for not paying attention to his surroundings and it's kind of hard to watch.
If the Oilers let Holloway go, they'll have turned a late 4th into what seems like a very similar player that plays a more helpful position (EDM has much less depth on RW than they do on the left), more than a million in cap space, and STL's 3rd. That feels like a big win to me as an Oilers fan, even though I liked Holloway a lot.
Its worth mentioning that Landeskog was video'd doing his skate recently, and he looks much MUCH better than the last time we saw him on video. Still looks like December or later to me, but hes most certainly making real progress.
Updates from Bednar are about as useful as a snow shovel in Hawaii, one day he'll tell us a player is day to day then a week later the player is out 9-12 months.
Regarding Minnesota, THG this Sunday at noon I'm having Joe Smith from the Athletic, Alexis Pearson the voice of Women's hockey team and Pat Mickeletti a Hockey God Here in Minnesota, I'm averaging almost 800 views per show Using your show as my Blue print, Denny from Minnesota
I've competed in Play On three years in a row but haven't played in it for something like 10ish year. My biggest issues before was the fact teams who should be playing in a higher division, would go play in a lower one just so they could have a better chance of winning. Also, each year I played, the reffing we had was HORRENDOUS!! Half of the time the ref we had would be looking at his phone for half the game and not paying attention to anything.
@@ianhall6614Wait until the end of his career to make that judgment. I just watched a video from Hockey Junkie about 20 years of Canadiens draft failures. It turns out they actually drafted pretty well; they just failed to develop the players properly, gave up on them too early, and traded them away for mid-range picks. It’s basically the same story as this trade.
The biggest concern remains our 3rd D Pair. Either Tocchet really believes Adam Foote can work his magic on these large men, or we're going to be spending a whole lotta time in our zone due to poor ability to carry that puck out. I really hope we fix this at the trade deadline.
See this is why the Oilers should at least walk away from Broberg, not just the money part but if the Canucks can trade a former #10 overall for a 4th rounder, then the Oilers shouldn't complain about getting a 2nd rounder from the Blues for Broberg even though he showed well in the playoffs.
Three top-10 picks gone to waste since 2016, and now you got Canucks talking heads saying that Klimovich is a plug who was picked several rounds early, too. Honestly, it's embarrassing.
I went to a Canucks game once. I couldnt get a Bure or Mogilny jersey so i picked Podkolzin since he was a promising rookie with a cool name. At least he still has a cool name
Nuge and Skinner to run the show if the doomsayers are right. Hyman could still get 50 though. Skinner and Pickard might play good but they could be playing for a non playoff team.
I don’t think ppl realize that tons of teams lose their former 1st round players for nothing because they never panned out as expected. Pods is a North-south player much like Virtanen. If u give them the puck they’re probably just gonna shoot it and not be creative enough to make plays…
Obviously not. He’s only worth what somebody would pay. That’s a 4th. He’s hasn’t played well enough to get much more then a 4th anyways. I’m surprised the nucks even got that.
@@decentish8546 He's a youngish skater that still has upside. With someone like that you wait until the trade deadline when you get the maximum value. You definitely could have got a third, maybe even a third and a sixth
No matter what I say in these comments, I get people disagreeing with me, and saying I'm wrong. So here's my comment... Hi! My username is DoppaD and I have to drink liquids (usually water) in order to remain alive.
I've never seen anything of note in Podkolzins game besides his will to drive the net. It is so incredibly foolish to write off Holloway after 2 iffy regular seasons, especially for an Oilers team that's already super old up front and on the blueline.
Whether its a good trade or not depends entirely on if you think Podkolzin got a good chance to succeed or not in Vancouver. If yes, then hes washed up and worth nothing so getting anything for him is good, or no and he could still succeed if given the chance and Vancouver gave up a good player for pennies. Clearly Vancouver management is thinking the former.
Nicushkin needs to be banned permanently. The guys seriously messed up. Willing to toss away an NHL career, over stupid stuff. He's a cancer. Avs need to move on. He's had too many chances. Stop rewarding bad behavoir!!!
Hard to believe that Landeskog is the fifth highest paid player for the AVS, and he's signed through 28-29, at 7 Mil per season. Mackinnon 12.6 mil through 30-31 Rantanen 9.25 mil through 24-25 Makar 9 mil through 26-27 Toews 7.25 through 30-31.
Math Time Kiddies: So Kane LTIR at $5,125,000 plus moving Josh Brown to the Bake (another 1,000,000) LESS Broberg at $4,580,917 Less newly acquired Podkolzin at 1 million gives us $544,083 on the PLUS side of the cap less the almost $400,000 we were over before) still gives us about 144K to the plus side and we replace Holloway, Keep Broberg, Keep Ceci and Kulak while moving down an 8th Defender (Josh Brown) letting us field a 13 forward, 7 D, 2 Goalie squad if I read this right while being Cap compliant. The biggest Gotcha for us has to be how long Kane will be on LTIR. If it's not until playoffs something BIG has got to give. Take care all.
He's 5 years from his draft year and wasn't going to make the fourth line for the Canucks. Why would a team give up more than a fourth round pick for him?
