I don’t think the message was meant to be depressing I think there is a certain beauty and harmony in that message, that love is as unconditional and uncompromising as death and in that way humans are never ever able to truly “love”. I think that’s pretty dope.

Canute to me is Thorfinn's inverse in many aspects. While the former degenerated after his Fathers death, the other properly thrived and grew from his Fathers death. Everything, down to their upbringing clearly makes them oppositional to one another and yet they're also thread from the same cloth.

Priest was correct about what love is. People only care about those who are close or dear to them. They can't possibly care for all the people who are suffering throughout the world and thus, no one and nothing truly loves in this world. They discriminate against others by loving only those they choose to. However we can't and shouldn't achieve true love because I think that's something abstract beyond our reach. One thing touched me in this episode though. "If I had been born as your son, everything would've been better" That line hurt me. :'( Canute development is real. It was so epic when he scared Bjorn with pure resolve and anger at God. He's asking the same question I was when I first started questioning religion as a teenager. Canute is now by far my favourite character and I had a feeling he'd become one. This show truly is something special. Masterpiece. BTW Lupe c'mon chill with your laughing, especially in an episode like this. I love you but c'mon.

I think the “Love” message is a deep and meaningful one. How can we call ourselves “pure” and “love” when we tolerate a world of hate and violence? The Priest’s argument is that to have Love, is to be Pure. And Purity is simply impossible for us as human beings. How can we say we’re “loving” when we resent others, even those who are suffering and simply strangers to us. The only person I grew up believing that was Pure was Jesus, because he never turned away anyone who came to him. He allowed the poor and diseased to sit with him and broke bread with the sinners. In regards to the Priest and his idea on love, I feel it needs to be pointed out that we shouldn’t take EVERYTHING he says seriously. As we will find out later, he is not NEARLY as wise or experienced in priesting than we first think.

When i was watching this show, i accidentally stumbled upon a thumbnail of canutes scrunched up angry face and my first response was that he would somehow awaken some bullshit anime warrior spirit from within and unleash mayhem on everyone. But instead, we get this beautiful realisation of beliefs that makes perfect sense to his character, and instead of unleashing mayhem on his foe to shut them down, he used none other than his words and emotion. A true warrior doesnt need a sword.

Ok. I've watched this scene a few times and I think I finally got my head around it. The Priest's assertions about love bothered me and I couldn't quite figure out why. I felt that he came to the wrong conclusion about love when he pointed to the man that was dead as the perfect example. I believe him to be wrong because while it is indeed true that those who have died can no longer hate, steal, or hurt; that they give themselves up to the cycle of life, it wasn't "willingly". The man was killed and all agency that happens to his body thereafter is not his own. He doesn't choose to stop hatred, to stop stealing, to stop killing, to give up his body so that other things may grow and thrive. To make the conscious effort after weighing the costs for and against and making the decision to not hate even if someone has made grievous transgressions against you, to make that decision to not steal even when you are starving and destitute, THAT is love. Love is a choice, a decision we make every day. As human beings we are incapable of living up to the standards of perfect love described in the our religious texts as we are imperfect beings prone to error, prone to moments of petty action and selfishness, prone to falling to our baser drives. I believe that the purpose is to constantly strive for that ideal, to meditate on it and realize that perfect love, along with so many other intangible things we long to reach can only be approached asymptotically. As human beings incapable of achieving perfection, our love will be discriminatory, but it can't be reduced merely to discrimination. Ragnar did love Canute. He loved the prince like a son. His guidance wasn't perfect, but since he is merely human, he could only do the best he could.

This is my favorite episode in all of Vinland saga

The first time I watched this episode I was a little disappointed about half way though after having to wait 2 weeks, I really wanted to see Thorfinn's fight be a little more center stage, but at the end and after this reaction it really just goes to show how good all of the characters are in this series. I was too focused on Canute to even notice the priest's progression with gaining his faith back. This shit just keeps getting better and better.

The father was being dark the whole time sharing his fucked up view (that also makes sense, just a different perspective) and the way the conversation was being directed it looked like Canute was about to fall into the cliche “I’m going to bring you salvation by killing you” anime villain mentality. At the end he interprets it in his own way which makes the character feel 1000x times more real, problably any other person in the anime would’ve became a Mad King type of deal. Askeladd was able to see that Canute is inherently a guy with good will when he judged him by looking at his face, his “talent”.

The lady was right about canutes anger and rage. Because he did channel all of that to get rid of all his competitors snd enemies and became a good king. Apart from the unavoidable conflicts attached to being a ruler.

Love is death seems like a very Christlike interpretation. Thors as a warrior was driven by an empty will to survive. But once he found something beautiful like Vinland, he became kind and willing to die for the sake of others. Just like Christ's willingness to die for the sins of others. That may be the only way to truly find peace and paradise since war only perpetuates cycles of hatred. It almost worked in Thors' case since Askeladd was moved by him and admired him, it just happened that the world of peace hadn't spread enough for others to abide by it. It's honestly very very deep.

For those who didn't understand the priest (my interpretation): Earlier in the series, two brothers asked if their brotherly love was the same love the priest talked about. However, as the priest said, it's simply discrimination. While it's true they seem to love each other, they would surely kill hundreds of people if it meant saving one another. Similarly, Ragnar's love was not true love since Ragnar would prefer to love Canute, even if it meant harming others. True love is like the snow, a dead corpse, or a tree. True love does not discriminate. True love means giving, whether or not the recipient is a devote Christian, a vile murderer, or anything in between. Here's what I enjoyed so much about Vinland Saga. This idea combines with Thors' idea of what it means to be a true warrior. A true warrior doesn't need a sword because they don't have enemies. Your family is not your enemy, nor is someone trying to kill you. In the same way, true love means to love, regardless of who they are. This is what I believe it means to be a true warrior.
