Ragnar died in the snow, Canute was reborn in it.

I found the priest's speech fascinating. From what I understand, he explains that death is love, because death does not discriminate: it loves everyone equally. He says it: the dead accept everything, without ever complaining: death treats everyone the same way. In Buddhism we would speak of equanimity. He speaks literally about it but it is also a metaphor (the death of the ego), it obviously also speaks about selfish love, the one who wants to possess, who loves one and not another: who discriminates. He talks about it when he explains that it is like worshipping a king while whipping a slave, or when he says that Ragnar placed the Prince above everything, even his life: selfish love hierarchizes, has limits. That's why the Priest told the two brothers that their filial love was not the love he was looking for, when they told him they couldn't have this relationship with anyone. This love is a "masturbation in pairs" (Sartre), the wise loves all while consuming himself in his mystical love, disappearing to reveal the loved one. A poem by Djalāl ad-Dīn Rûmî (which I translate), perfectly comments his speech: « Men are like the three butterflies in front of a candle flame. The first one approaches it and says: "I know love." The second one comes to touch the flame with his wings and says: "I know the burning of love." The third one throws itself into the heart of the flame and consumes itself. Only he knows true love. » Or, in a more Christian register, the Father « makes rain fall on the righteous and the unrighteous » (Matthew 5 : 44-45), without discrimination... The Prince and the Priest will end on an almost pantheistic note, seeing love in everything (snow, sky, etc.): Nature does not judge, she is for all the same, like death. She is love, she gives herself to everyone. Man cuts, hierarchizes, divides, discriminates, and breaks unity. The Prince will find his answer at the end of the episode in deciding to build his salvation here on earth and now, saying that he no longer needs to wait for the Father's good will. An almost Gnostic conclusion... An almost Luciferian rebellion.

In that sense, Thors embodied love when he fought Askeladd's men. He did not discriminate in the life he felt was precious. That's why the priest was so intrigued and moved by the statement "a true warrior needs no sword" because in his fight all lives would be indiscriminantly protected.

@proxythefool

@@Kezmark This isn't some type of physical change he's supposed to go through from training. This is in the same light as Thorfinn losing his dad and going from cheery kid to a revenge driven character filled with nothing but anger and hatred in the same minute. Canute's been in the same state all his life, sheltered and pampered, yet also surrounded and influenced by the doubt within his very own faith and belief. Losing the only person he's ever cared about and who's ever cared for him, while simultaneously taking on the idea that love is nonexistent as well as rejecting his faith and straight rebelling against it will lead to a sudden change in character. I actually can't imagine him not becoming like that after that entire segment.
@kpetalis
@kpetalis 4 года назад
@@Kezmark It's not unearned or whatever you imagine. Characters change is not something that must happen over a long period of time and most of the time it's something that exist inside us already. We simply didn't need to change in this way because external reasons stopped us from changing. Canute already has the capacity of a king. He has the knowledge, training and ability. He was trained to be a ruler and leader of men since he was young. He lived in an environment of vipers and backstabbing, and so he knows what it means to say the wrong thing and knows that the people around him are ruthless warriors. Ragnar was the only one keeping him grounded and sheltered. He gave him kindness and love. He protected him and Canute used this as a shield and excuse for not taking part in the game of thrones. But he is NOT incompetent. As soon as Ragnar died and after his talk with the priest he simply started to take control of his life. He started using what he had learned and what he knew he could do but chose not to simply because he had Ragnar as a shield before. We have seen this side of Canute briefly when he argued with Thorfinn. He explained way he didn't make any permanent decisions and argued that he was cautious instead of loud and reckless. Here he simply shed the mask and started acting as a king. A king he has trained and grew to be since he was a kid.

A true warrior doesn't need a sword. Canute has fought and won without a sword. Canute does definitely include himself in the people who don't know what the meaning of life and love is. That is why he embraces Bjorn and says that Bjorn and Atli shouldn't die.

to quote the movie Hero: "Broken Sword scroll contains no secrets of swordsmanship. What it reveals is his highest ideal. In the first stage, man and sword become interchangeable. Here, even a blade of grass can be used as a lethal weapon. In the next stage, the sword resides not in the hand, but in the heart. Even without a weapon, the warrior can slay his enemy from a hundred paces. But the ultimate ideal is when the sword disappears altogether. The warrior embraces all around him. The desire to kill is gone. Only peace remains."

I actually had to watch this episode numerous times in order to truly grasp everything that was going on which I think is praised to the show itself with such interesting and complex ideas. How I interpreted the priest speech is he was saying that humans cannot know true love, because true love does not discriminate true love doesn't pick favorites it loves everything equally. But humans by our very nature have preferences, would you lay down your life to protect an animal? Would you lay down your life to protect an insect crossing the street? Would you throw away your life for a random stranger? Most people would say no and anyone who says yes probably doesn't actually know if they could but they would like to think so. That's why I connect turns his back on God he realizes that by humans very nature, by literally the way we were born we are imperfect and flawed and cannot be saved and taken into God's graces. Because we cannot Love by our very nature, we are beyond saving. So Canute turns his back on God and decides he's going to make his own heaven here on Earth without having to rely on God. I do find it interesting though even though he has turned his back,he still believes in God

37:20 Uh... we can actually prove that. We do have the tech for that. Biochemistry and quantum mechanics basically disprove "free will". Everything in our brains is molecules that are physical, tangible, and work together mechanically. Quantum mechanics merely brings a "randomness" element to it... but is randomness "free will"? One could argue "free will" could still exist from non-physical things, but that's impossible to prove or disprove with our current technology... because no technology could ever prove or disprove that. But then, you must postulate the idea of there being non-physical things that could make free will exist. And the burden of proof is on the people who claim those exist's shoulder. However, I think we can still disprove "free will" philosophically and logically. When I make a choice, I basically have many options. I choose one option over the others. But here's the catch : there's always something that MAKES me choose that option, something that makes me think "this is the best option", even if subconsciously. A desire? I don't choose my desires, they just exist. A fact of the world? I don't choose facts either. Morals? They were ingrained during my childhood, and even if I changed some, it would be based on a desire to change them, or facts about the world would force me to change them. In other words, a choice is not so much a "free choice", but a natural conclusion that stems from premises. I put "free will" and "free choice" in parenthesis because 1. "free will" is often a pretty vague term 2. "free will" and "free choice" are phrases that doesn't make sense to me, since I consider that will and choices cannot be free, by nature, for the reasons mentioned above. In other words, they are oxymorons. Or you have to define what "free" means in this context.

treat of it this way, do you agree we have too innate instincts in men, one is the instinct of self preservation and the other is the instinct of helping another human being, when you are presented with a dilemma that pits these two instincts together, the thing that chooses which instinct to follow is not predetermined. it is the one determining what will happen to your body, it is the one that is willing it to move, to either ignore the person inside the burning building or rush inside it to save the person even if it would risk your death also.

Canute's mentality is still twisted when it comes to how he thinks about God and trials, and the idea that he thinks they've been abandoned. Apart from that, hate is something that is important to have. Hate against evil. Most aspects of his perspective make sense when thought of in a certain way, but not in others. I hope to see a character in vinland saga wich comes to this point of mindset aswell, but decides that he is fine living a, loveless life to say. I really love to see how some characters are driven by their philosophy and how canute will probably do anything for his ideal because he in his head is going for the good. But seeing a character that comes to that, but decides to ignore this philosophy he found, wich is aswell, some kind of peace to the individual. He came to a conclusion to the world, and decides that his goal is not to reach that perfection, I really would love to see something like this. This would be some kind of insanity to the characters like canute, but at the same time some kind of sanity

DAX Miner Caleb is a history buff, so he knows a lot of the big things Canute has done. I don’t know much about history myself and I know nothing about Canute, but how does he succeed? Isn’t creating a paradise on earth impossible?

DAX Miner yeah, but that wasn’t really his goal. He obviously wanted to be the king so that he had the power to make his paradise on earth, but he never actually succeeded in making the paradise.

Azazelop I wouldn't say that he created a "paradise on Earth", but his empire certainly played a key role in ending the Viking Age, so there's that at least.

Between the priest's words and the questions that Canute posed to God, what's not to get? It's not particularly complicated, Canute just had something of an epiphany after a series of traumatic/difficult events. Seemed to me that he had been carrying those doubts about God, the people of the world and how it all works for a while, but what he'd been through recently and the priest's interpretation of things were what finally broke through his usually reserved, timid nature. He couldn't stand to just meekly accept it all anymore, especially without the comfort Ragnar provided.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like Thorkell and this whole archetype of the "haha big guy likes to fight cuz fight funny lol", I can't help but get DB flashbacks...
@zeemod1556
@zeemod1556 4 года назад
I think it's more complicated than that. DBZ villains are more malice for malice's sake. Whereas Thorkell is clearly physically large and which almost certainly ostracized him from others, influenced a unique and horrible upbringing, his philosophy of strength and the "propper" way to live. Also I think this anime is just trying to explore as many differnt types of ways people think about life and death and the proper way to carve out success in the world. Thorkell's straightforwardness is a pretty good foil for a lot of our hero's more complex ideals/philosophies. It causes them to call in to question their beliefs and here's hoping Thorkell's philosophies will be challenged as much of a task that would be. As all these different walks of life begin to slowly form a united front, boy does that make for some really fascinating conflicts.
@Kopplex
@Kopplex 4 года назад
@@zeemod1556 When you talk about his upbringing, is this something that was addressed later on in the manga or are you just speculating? I'm pretty sure in the anime they never addressed that, if anything I would believe that being that big and large at that time would've been considered a good thing + he's the brother of you-know-who... so kind of hard to think that he'll get ostracized because of that.
@familyvalue5588

Well, Thorkell is special in that archetype. He is not a single character that just loves fighting. He is the embodiment of the viking culture. He is the perspective needed to contextualize the religious viking maniacs. He and his followers are like crusaders. He's also very charismatic, funny and much more introspective than most others of the archetype.
