_______________ THANK YOU ________________________________
The design and build of a capacitor leakage tester to check capacitor leakage at their rated (or working) voltages in tube radio and other tube era equipment.
The linearly variable voltage implemented in the design also serves as a means of reforming old electrolytic capacitors.
I could have bought an old one and restored it, but this seemed like a better idea - designing and building a more accurate and modern one, as well as making the applied voltage linearly variable so that I can get a true reading of the leakage as the operating voltage rises.
Obviously, another requirement was safety. High voltage zaps you, and I like living.
This video is the first of the design stages of the circuit.
Have fun, and be careful - this thing has high voltages that can kill you.

Very tutorial way for substituting a capacitor on the original circuit without damaging the old original junction connection to the circuit itself.thank you for the practical hint,so did I with my latest experiment,that worked very well. Thank you very much for the precious videos.

Attaching via a loop of wire is *MUCH* *BETTER* than j-hooking it!! Otherwise it will be a PAIN for the next guy!

The 5 position switch for the project has to be the shorting type. Otherwise the ammeter will peg every time the switch is changed. This may be common knowledge but I didn't know it and I am an electrical engineer. I bent the needle on my ammeter . Fortunately the ammeter was the open type so I went in and bent it back.

really great videos. Just the right amount of explanation to make things clear without boring to death:)

I like the little coil of wire grafting method. I never cut leads because I do the like the way they look when out back together but this method looks pretty nice

Very nice.I would go ahead and replace them all if possible .

It would be interesting to see a video in which you replace some capacitor or other components, to have an idea about the manuality, because the space of work is often small. Thank you

Not something I choose to do in the videos. It’s really laborious and results in shoddy work, hence bad examples of the way it’s done. There are some really good examples on the web, carried out by people who have set up their cameras so as to achieve a good demonstration of “how it’s done”.

when i want to rough test the standard 500v caps or even 250v ones i simply grab my crocodile clips and place a diode in series with the capacitor, stick the capacitor+diode into the wall socket live wire(220v, diode leg into the socket) then to measure put one multimeter lead on the neutral and the other on the capacitor remaining leg...any dc volts reading means voltage leaking through the cap..new caps read zero and the worst caps i tested were the famous wima cough drops or brown turds like i call them and some were letting more then 100vdc pass through so since i am only using half wave (one diode) it means almost a short

Like the explanation of the effect of capacitor leakage on Grid Bias of Vacuum Tubes. Which would be equally valid for CMOS technology, with the difference of dealing with lower voltages and thus a diminished effect of the leakage evident only at higher test voltages. Would it not? Which is not implying that low voltage applications make leakage testing redundant. ;) Thank's for mentioning that as well.

Frank Koslowski : yes it would be similar because of the high impedance.

Hi Mr Caldeira. I think am about ready to start calibrating this instrument in terms of Leakage current. Have followed your video no 1, all through and it seems that I did not get the way you hooked up your AVO mA meter to the device. You are right though a typical DMM will draw around 30uA, hence what you were reading. So how do you adjust all the scales ? I will appreciate the feedback. Thank you

I’m afraid I cannot give you more info than is on the videos, because it’s been some time since I did that and would have to do exactly the same thing: go back and watch my own videos.

@@electronicsoldandnew I think I got it. Just missed 10sec out of your part 1, which made sense. All good back on track. Thank you !

If I take 10 micro amps times 500 kilo ohms, I get 5 volts. Not .5 volts. Am I wrong?
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 6 лет назад
Scott Palmer : yes, but I use 1 micro amp in my example, not 10 micro amp.
@scottpalmer1616
@scottpalmer1616 6 лет назад
True, but that's not what you wrote. I do see your point. I think you meant to write 1 micro amp but wrote 10 with the answer worked out already. Just a typo I'm sure. I did enjoy you video. Ta

Scott Palmer : sorry, still don’t see the error. 10^(-6) = 1 x 10^(-6) = 1 micro amp. Where do you see the mistake? Please give me the time in the video and I’ll check again. Thanks.
