@@DarthMessias There are some laws that are obviously meant for our safety. Which I would have liked to have said to the motorcyclist who was stopped at a red light with me the other day but decided he didn't want to wait til it was green...
Throughout the 1900s many states across the U.S. and the Federal Government as well had laws on the books that were morally wrong and later invalidated as unconstitutional. It's disheartening to consider all the deliberate intent and collective action it took to bring those laws into being and the army of individuals that went about enforcing them. The majority has been known to be wrong...just absolutely morally, ethically, historically and indeed, unconscionably wrong.
I agree, its on par with DS9 easily. So so good and worthwhile. At some point when the series is complete, this needs to be broadwaved outside paramount plus. Maybe the writer/sag-aftra strike will make it possible for this show to be available outside the walled garden. The people need to see this, kids need to see this, on the air without obstruction of a pay wall.
Great argument. They're both right and wrong. Blindly following rules is never good, especially for a commander. Just letting people slide when they break the rules doesn't work either. Compromise is key.
Maturity is being able to ask if the rules are wrong and saying yes....sometimes. The world is not black and white, but the law tries to make you think it is. In reality it's all shades of grey.
@@filthycasual8187 you should rewatch TOS, and remember it was in the 60s. Nichelle Nichols even being in the show was woke. the scene where her character was forced to kiss the white captain in a decade when same states literally outlawed inter-racial marriage, was extremely woke. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield was an entire episode of preaching, and so was A Taste of Armageddon. I could go on and on...
There's no way Captain Patel could be a serving line officer in command of a starship. The Arresting Officer of record for Una's case and the prosecutung officer at the JAG proceedings. add to that, she has an ongoing relationship with Una's Commanding Officer, and all of this screams Conflict of Interest.
Now I remember where I saw this actress before, she played Mary's sister on an episode of Frankie Drake. Since they are making the show in Canada it's a good idea to employ Canadian actors. Especially considering this episode has been in the can for about a year (They started filming Season 2 right after they finished filming Season 1)
This thinly veiled episode about immigration was fantastic. After being arrested they used the law to show her claim of asylum was valid and it made her a true citizen of the Federation granting her back the position of First Officer in Starfleet she had spent the last 20 years working towards, even though she was an "illegal" the entire time.
It made me so mad that she went against him. She claimed to be on Una's side but then she went for the hardest punishment it's clear she didn't like her because of her race.
You'd be surprised in official proceedings JAG is used for describing the institution. When referring to the leadership they used full term since they probably didn't have a name that would inspire the same effect as the full term meaning in this dialog.
@@o5-692 The United Earth, and subsequently, the Federation banned genetic engineering after the Eugenics Wars (In which Khan Noonien-Singh tried to establish dominance over humanity). Una, being Illyrian, has genetic modifications which is par for the course for her species, and as such would have otherwise been banned from joining Starfleet on account of that, which is why she concealed it.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon Technically his parents broke it by having him augmented because he wasn't doing so hot in school. His father, eventually, accepted a deal to go to prison for two years in a penal colony in New Zealand so that Bashir could keep his commission and his medical practice.
@@filthycasual8187 Una didn't break the law either by those terms since her augmentations were done in-utero. ZERO cognition or awareness. At least Bashir was born, had awareness and could express some frustration or provide some other sign that could indicate consent. (Yes, young children ARE evaluated, and even asked, to see if they consent, then combine it with the parents to obtain full consent, to Euthanasia in the Netherlands) Bashir DEFINITELY broke the law when he didn't put his nature on his application to Starfleet.
Seriously can I get a female enterprise crewmember with long hair who is heterosexual? Is that too much to ask these days? apparently so. Good thing we have reruns of next generation otherwise I don’t know what we would do.
