Also, a FAB Fact: It is possible to here Big Ben strikes 13 in real life. Some people did a similar experiment in 2010.

This is one of my favourite from when I was little. I think the reason it’s so engaging is because it’s acted dead seriously with the awesome dramatic music like it would in any live action show that sells it.

Pulling you into the story and engaging you as if they were real people was a big part of Gerry and Sylvia's genius. You just don't care that they're puppets as it's so well written. It's a shame we don't still have shows like this anymore. There's a couple of behind the scenes documentaries on how they made their various shows that are well worth checking out, even if it's on personal time rather than as reactions.

The Andersons had a really good handle on how to engage their audience, and they had good support from Lew Grade, the boss of ITC which funded the shows (along with a large number of other famous 60s and early 70s programs). Their 1963 series _Stingray_ was the first children's drama to be filmed in colour, despite the UK not having colour TV broadcasts for many more years, because Grade was keen to keep pushing into the US market - this gave the Supermarionation shows a lot longer shelf life than some of their contemporaries. Ironically Grade's son Michael worked hard to get _Doctor_ _Who_ cancelled in the 80s, and later tried to block the show's 2005 revival!

The Angel with Scarlet is Melody Angel. Being from London this episode was close to home. It really gets tense with the music as the SPV and Truck are racing to the building site.

When I first saw this, Dad said the writer got the idea of the 13 chimes from an old Hitchcock film. I've never come across such a film by Hitch but The Prisoner used a similar idea at the same time (could even have been the same evening!) in its episode The Chimes of Big Ben.

Thunderbirds, Joe 90 and Stingray also have engaging puppets and amazing model work. I know you've seen 'Trapped in the Sky' from Thunderbirds - maybe now you are getting on board with puppet shows, once you have finished Captain Scarlet, perhaps a revisit to the other shows.?

Took me ages to realise Francis Matthews was using Cary Grant's voice for Captain Scarlet.

Great episode and review. Okay, I can't help but explain what 'SIG' means, 'Spectrum is Green' - depending on the context it can mean 'yes', 'okay', 'good', 'roger', affirmative', 'all good', 'safe', etc. There was also 'SIR" 'Spectrum is Red' which could mean: 'no', 'not good/bad', 'danger', or similar. Essentially 'SIG' was the equivalent of 'FAB' on 'The Thunderbirds' which was short for 'fabulous' or 'fab' but was stated as letters 'Efff...Ayyy...Beee'. I better leave it there. Glad you are really liking the show, the story and sets, have fun.

I more or less remembered the reason for Big Ben striking 13, except I thought it was to do with an echo in a particular location. I have a feeling the same idea night have been used elsewhere.

The puppets are less wooden than a lot of real actors.

I just keep seeing how this and UFO planted the seeds for Voltron and Power Rangers. But this had vastly better writing.

Sometimes I try to come up with humerus alternatives to TV show titles. One of these would see a crossover with a children's book and TV series, making this sci-fi show being referred to as 'Captain Scarlet and the Mr.Men'. Another one would see all the Martians having the same surname, thus 'Captain Scarlet and the Mr.Ron's'.

This time they won 😀 a very good point. More shows should have our heroes and heroines lose more often. And as every one has pointed SIG is Spectrum Is Green. I always thought it was based on their colour coded alert system the levels being red orange yellow green blue indigo violet 🌈. Just joking just the standard RYG alert levels

Which Angel is which? That's a bit more complex than it needed to be, as some episodes actually get the name and voice mixed up. One Angel they cannot decide if she's Chinese or Japanese for example, and the redhead has a 'swinging sixties London girl' accent which is right out of fashion now, as it means 'very low class' today. Then there's the matter of them not having boyfriends or anything but a professional friendship (with the other Angels) except for the last episode, which might just be a 'dying / delirious dream episode' not out of place in 'Stingray', a much earlier Anderson series (but fun to see where these more serious later shows came from).

If you like the Angels, I understand they had their own strip in the "TV21" comic that was published around the time Captain Scarlet was first shown. The only trouble with that is, you'd probably have to sell your car to afford to buy the back issues.

Here's a thought: Did Gerry Anderson experience the 13 chimes of Big Ben in real life, and then decide to include it in one of his stories?
