I had forgotten just how dark this show was - every episode had some horrific death scene and those mysterons never gave an inch.Thunderbirds was always so very upbeat with the emphasis on saving lives, whereas this series gave us some of the most nightmarish scenes ever made for a kids' tv show. Gerry Anderson was a genius!

Having started primary school at age 5 when I watched Captain Scarlett c.1969 and not presumably not having seen these opening episodes [would not have understood them then], I was surprised at the maturity of this scene - not just having some mindless alien aggressor - but then same human fear and aggression instincts in The Day the Earth Stood Still etc. Of course, as some have pointed out, contrary to the naive human projection of human aggression, greed and conquest onto ETs, no intelligent species capable of interstellar travel would need Earth's minerals or other resources as they could easily get them from nearby asteroids or by chemical synthesis etc. I was also surprised at how much more polished and mature the whole production was than the kiddies stuff I was expecting.

This would be the only time that we would see Captain Black in his full Spectrum uniform as for the rest of the series, he would completely ditch it in favour of wearing black leather jackets, trenchcoats with dark grey sweaters and pants with long boots while fully embracing the entire persona of a Mysteron agent. I also loved that he never ever talked much and was mostly silent which made him more like a zombie but would only say a few words in that deep robotic voice. The glazed eyes, the pale skin and unshaved apperance complimented his new look perfectly. My all time favourite villain out of the entire Gerry Anderson shows.

What marvellous mayhem! I almost feel like a kid again! Now, if I could just get my hands on the first Thunderbirds movie. It covers the same ground as this episode and makes it clear that it was the hostile and unprovoked attack by the humans that began the war with the Mysterons.

These unique innovative supermarionation shows are like seeing and hearing some kind of strange alternate earth reality, a parallel world quite familiar and very similar to ours and yet detached and ominously different, so weird, its haunting hallucinatory ambiance. >>>>>>>>>>>>> 10:23

Good grief, this is dark! I grew up in England, but this was, only just, before my time. It was syndicated, but we didn’t get it in our region as it only appeared on TV in London. HOWEVER, as every parent knows, kids can hack stuff, and as London was only about 40 miles away, as a 7-year-old kid, I found a way of just managing to tune into London Weekend Television (the London channel at the time), and could pick this show up. I have never seen this early episode until today, some 50 odd years later.

As a kid, the closing titles always upset me. I used to imagine how horrible it must be to die repeatedly, and no one ever seemed to ask “hey Scarlet, how’re you doing buddy? That last death must have been rough as hell. Do you wanna talk about it?” Of course this was before I understood what PTSD is. Spectrum must have had a huge occupational health department.

I've just watched this and I remembered everything, I knew what was going to happen, I knew the plot and the outcome. The funny thing is, I watched this in the sixties when I was about six or seven, and as a kid it left indelible mark on my mind. I loved this Anderson program more than the others. This should be remade as a film, with live actors. I shall watch more and I have subscribed. I am gobsmacked about the memory, I don't know what I ate yesterday, but I remember this. KorkytheKat UK

"We can only hear them over our radios, but I've got a feeling they're with us all the time." Out of all of Gerry Andersons antagonists, The Mysterons are by far the scariest. Unseen, but always there, always watching and always - understandably - vengeful (cheers, Captain Black!). Considering the show was made at the at the height of the Cold War, the constant threat of the enemy within, nuclear war and rhetoric parallels the Mysteron's 'war of nerves' against Earth.

Hollywood actors, with their CGI and multi million dollar budgets cant come with anything near as good as Gerry. This stuff is over 50 years old. Their marionettes were better actors than the assh*les they have in their multi million dollar holly'wood' productions. Those 'actors' are plastic, cant act without the help of some CGI. Boll*cks to them. Gerry is the real deal
