Hey Yogev , Great video mang! The visual rep of the groupings within the hieroglyph are awesome :-) The analysis is pretty spot on too! This tune is def a big variation on theme, which we're big on. I personally don't really take tempo changes into account, it's more incidental, Just expanding or contracting groupings giving the feeling of tempo shifts. this tune is just 16th note based, which is why its an "easy one" :-). The time sigs are a different story :-) Thanks for taking the time man! I owe u a beer!
OOOOOOOOO **dont panic dont panic, stay calm yogev, be an adult** Thanks a lot Elliot! I've been digging deep into you guys lately to make this video and I must say you blew me away with your drumming. Super super inspirational! Say, any chance getting you for a short cameo for the next Car Bomb episode?
I also discovered Car Bomb a few months ago and was blown away. They have been through a lot of turmoil (flooded basement and all gear distroyed) and hopefully making due and NEW MUSIC in the future??? Not sure what tech industry they are in but my research says they developed their own mics! Who does that...way beyond just musicians!!!
@@YogevGabay serious haha! Thank you very much, and no problem at all absolutely loved it. I listen to them for weeks at a time and sometimes even I struggle to keep up hahaha
@@YogevGabay So...can the Yogev Gabay fans and the Car Bomb fans both get a special guest appearance on Time Consuming where they can give you the feedback you requested? I think it would be really interesting to learn if they approached the composition differently than your analysis of what they arrived at, like were there any happy accidents? Or were you spot on and deciphered the code?
The more you listen to Car Bomb, the more you realize that metric modulation is the foundation of their formula. They are literally the Yang to Meshuggah's Yin.
@@DuffyLONER64 he meant Car Bombs' savage, hot and SOMEHOW* baroquely complex approach to the matter opposed to the pure, glacial and minimalist complex approach by Meshuggah *SOMEHOW because Car Bomb don't play useless notes motivated by a self indulgent ear-pleasing attitude, which was a defect by many baroque classical musicians, but all the same they sound (they are, and this video is a proof) more articulated than Meshuggah.
@@DuffyLONER64 cutting it short, it's like Meshuggah want you to understand and reflect about how music can expand wider through polyrhythm, feeding (AWESOME) sketches of that, while Car Bomb want you to experience it by painting the best faithful picture of it they can. Meshuggah = Theory / Car Bomb = Praxis
Exactly. Meshuggah is rigidly structured. They never, ever, deviate from 4/4. Car Bomb is open-ended. They swing between tempos and time signatures. But one thing they have in common with Meshuggah is a good sense of how to develop small ideas into a cohesive whole.
This is absolute gold for anyone who wants to master their ability to compose rhythm properly. Metal in 5 years or so is going to be insane thanks to you making this knowledge available and so easy to grasp.
Car Bomb was the first Band I heard first live on a concert without knowing them and not wanting them to stop. I was instantly sucked into their music and left with complete peace until they stopped playing... then I was quite a bit sad it was over. Fortunately, Meshuggah comforted me right after that.
They also change note rates a lot, and not just to the "normal" tuplets like 5s and 7s. Metal Music Theory has some really amazing transcription videos that I'd recommend everyone check out, really helps put into perspective just how insane some of Car Bomb's riffs are. I've never heard a band bend time quite as wildly as they do.
@@TheSquareOnes That's the cool thing, they don't use a metronome, so they are both hard to quantize and transcribe but also they freer in that way - it's all feel.
Hearing Meta for the first time was a life changing experience. Many thanks to Ben Weinman from Dillinger for recommending the Car Bomb doco, Why You Do This. Been a fan ever since.
Love your vids, bro!! As a drummer, Car Bomb is no doubt one of my fav bands. Listening for the first time you have no idea wtf is going on.. but once you analyze it and understand it, you really can appreciate the genius behind that „musical chaos“
I had the chance to hang out with these guys after a show a number of years ago. It was the farewell tour for Dillinger when they stopped in Atlanta ( don't remember the venue ) and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had speaking to a touring band. They are down to earth and extremely talented. I asked about the title of their second album and was told that it was a simple saw wave. I always just called it W's. I got this album signed and totally missed the Dillinger set because my friends and I were talking to these dudes. This is by far my favorite modern metal group, and cant wait to hear their next album!
10:00 Yes. Yes and yes. Your analysis, both visual and verbal are absolute honey for the soul! I've never really given car bomb much time, but this video has changed that in terms of intention - I have a lot of appreciation for bands who explore these possibilities and rhythmic events, even if I can't spend as much time as I might wish I could listening to it (it's somewhat exhausting when musically you feel obliged to accept the challenge of understanding it). And that's where the comment comes full circle - glorious to see the puzzle unfurl. Just been to watch some of their live clips, the fact that their presentation is very much a tough guy hardcore band, and yet the complexity of what they do is there, this is a very satisfying case of not judging books by their covers or having a pre-conceived or judgemental bias/idea that there's not much intelligence in that scene...
Man I couldn't agree more. Also, I have a hard time just "listening" to music without paying attention to what's going on, which is why it took me a while to get into these guys. I just didn't have the time to actually sit and spend some hours actively listening to their stuff till now and I'm super happy I finally did!
Would love to hear you break down some of Zach Hills stuff, especially with his band hella. Probably one of the most unique drummers out there. His approach to drumming is on another level.
Hearing you talk about what they can do without computers made me realize that Car Bomb are musical mentats. I am genuinely so impressed that you're covering their music. So much of it feels through-composed, this is a huge undertaking and I appreciate it! Glad you're back Yogev!
Excellent analysis, i was wondering when you were gonna do some car bomb as well! We happen to have made an analysis for the same song, although mine was made from a guitarist's perspective and was also a walkthrough on how to play the riffs. Great to see more people noticing the insane stuff Car Bomb does, the conversation keeps growing! Cheers mate!
@@YogevGabay Oh yeah! This and 4 CB guitar covers with all the effects. Love this band. Your explanation was easier to follow than mine probably, i kinda took a more romantic fanboy approach haha. Definitely do more of them! 😃 Cheers from Greece
I remember when they were the opening act for In Flames and Opeth if I remember correctly. Never heard of them before and MAN! I was blown away, instant fan.
Oh shit it's Car Bomb time. Found out about them with Joe Duplantier's feat on The Oppressor and they completely blew my mind. Great video as always man!
This song and Lights Out from the album Meta sound like Bleed but taken to a new level. Instead of delivering the idea in a solid and reliable way like Meshuggah, they go full chaotic craziness for better or worse.
Fuck me, that clip of Frodo saying "it's getting heavier" got me 😂 EDIT: And thanks for the appreciation at the end, us girls can like/play weird as fuck music too ;)
@10:01 "Usually around this point in the video, I start wondering, is anyone still watching" Honestly Yogev, I'm still watching intently despite feeling quite lost and bewildered... I keep watching just in case something "sticks" for me...but it's all beyond my capability. You make it is as simple to understand as humanly possible, and I always learn something new from your videos, but I am quite glazed over. Thank you.
Yo Adam! Don't get discouraged. The material I present here is VERY advanced, and don't let the easygoing presentation fool you! It took me a LOOOOOOONG tome to figure these out
Oh man, I'm not just still watching, I'm burning in my willingness to play this hardrock shit on drums. Completely in love with your work and way how you explain
This is such a great breakdown! Car Bomb are one of those bands that make you go "WTF" a lot. You should do some Calculating Infinity era Dillinger Escape Plan stuff - like Sugar Coated Sour... haha.
The first actual band to melt my face off for many many weeks in a row...absolute madlads and very tight live. Props for trying to analyse these rubicscubes!
Hi Yogev, I love your videos and I love complex songs. I have some suggestions for your Analysis: Gentle Giant - So Sincere, Town Portal - Eschaton and a random song one of my favorite bands: "Protest the Hero" Keep grooving!
I keep getting blown away by your content, and this time you've outdone yourself yet again! Your way of explaining and visualizing such rhythmically complex insanity is nothing less than brilliant!
I recently discovered Car Bomb. They are absolutely crazy and I love it. Their use of shifting tempos, metric modulation, and changing time signatures as well as changing subdivisions and use of rhythmic and audio chaos is lovely
Your way to explain reminds me kinder garden teaching methods...Seems pretty reliable, especially with Car Bomb ! Thanks for your work which is very inspirationnal and get us to get the song and listen to it with a fresh gaze
When you mentioned getting excited about the simple beat, it reminded me of an article I read years ago about breakcore/IDM, discussing the percentage of chaos to solid rhythms. When a song has a lot of crazy stuff going on, it makes it more satisfying when it gets to something you can more easily grab onto. There is probably some theory there that is beyond my knowledge.
Finally you got into it! Super happy to see this band getting recognition. Your method of analyzing is so efficient. Looking towards all the Car Bomb content you might create 🚙💣
This video was amazing! If you dig these guys, you should check out Noise Trail Immersion, Ion Dissonance, and Coma Cluster Void! CCV has repeatedly melted my brain trying to break it down.
@@YogevGabay hum well , i think honeysuckle or low feels blvd from the last album is a good choice . Not the most famous song , but one of the most represantative of the band .
amazing content as always!!!! incredibly badass and high quality explanations. would LOVE to see you break down Car Bomb's song "Sets"!! the melting effect in the intro has had me stumped for a long time- is it in time or just a ritardando?? but looking forward to the next vid from you no matter what it is!! cheers dude- keep it up!
14:48 - Your statement is exactly how Ive come to feel about Car Bomb, particularly in the past half an year, as I finally was in the mood for the abrasiveness of "w^w^^w^w". and now that record has become basically medicine for me - I mean, nothing sounds as unhinged, raw, brutal, heavy, technical, broken, groovy, fast, frenetic, etc. as this record to my ears is something truly unique.
i fkn love when anyone tries telling me anything impossibly complicated for my tiny smooth brain to comprehend but i still somehow enjoying listening to the way they're telling it
i have been absolutely obsessed with car bomb since 2009 and the fact that the second album's title is a direct allusion to its first track is fuuuuuckiiiiing mindblowing, man. how the hell did i not notice that?!?!?
This was awesome and so insightful! I am not even a fan a Car Bomb, even though I know and repect the band, but i watched the whole video as the idea of building the whole song over the same rhythmical idea. Dude seriously, this channel is pure gold!
I love this band! Absolute genius. Totally humble, cool guys too. Chatted with me at length the second time I saw them live plus they're performance was awesome and perfect! 😮
Visual representations of this song is the most Drummer thing ever, and I absolutely love it. I'd love to see a smilar analysis of Finish It or Gum Under The Table
I have listened to this album. Once. It drilled holes in my brain. I managed to catch them at last Hellfest and it was a lot. This is helping me in making sense of what the fuck is going on.
