I've been sleeping in my small Toyota Corolla on road trips through 40 states (including Alaska!) for over a decade now. I'd love to get a high top campervan but it's not in the (financial) cards at the moment so I decided to try to make my sedan more comfortable to sleep in on road trips. Thus, camperolla was born! My genius idea ;) --aka most basic, cheap, minimalist way--I took the passenger seat out and put a board in where I can put cushions on and sleep laying down (with my feet sticking in the trunk a little ways, I'm 5'11"). In this video I share an alternative to #vanlife by sharing how I car camp in camperolla. Camperolla has 267,000 miles and I've had it for 18 years!

I've been living in my car for a couple months, church lots are awesome for sleeping. I've never had an issue and that's without asking. Bigger churches with large lots are better.

I have a 2004 Corolla and I was, like you, about to buy a van. A minivan. I stand 6'1" and want to thank you soooo much for putting this video out. That little Corolla only sips on gasoline 👍 I plan on doing the same thing you did with removing the seats. You just saved me close to $7-8k!! I appreciate you 🙏☮️♥️

i just bought a 96 Corolla! I'm going to make into my camperolla, for the exact samew reason u did. but, I will probably live in it a little longer like? you are an inspitration, I am 54 yrs old, female, clean and sober and i just want to be in the woods! i have about a grand to go on . thats all. scary but i gotta do it.

If you have been doing scheduled oil + filter changes, your Corolla will last another 50K miles, EASILY. ENJOY!

I love car camping. Definitely get window coverings so you feel more comfortable. I had tinted windows and just used cardboard cut to the shape of each window and spray painted black but there are so many options. Great video.

I camp in my 2011 Toyota Carolla sedan in Australia and have done so for many years.We can't modify our cars here, without voiding our insurance, or having our car classified as unroadworthy, if we are pulled over by the police. Luckily I am just 5 ft tal. so sleeping in the driver's seat with a suitcase to support my legs in the footwell works well for me. One way of making yourself pretty much invisible in your car whilst sleeping is to throw a black sheet over the top of youself. That red sleeping bag is so easy for anyone hanging around with a flash light to see you in there. Yes, I love red too and have a red fleecy throw, I need to hide at times.I actually feel safer without window coverings, but under my stealthy black sheet, as I like to be able to see who is around. My assumption is I am more likely to see and hear anyone with ill intent, before they see me, as I presume they would make a noise if they intended breaking in. All the best with your Camprolla!

I love to hear of others sleeping in their Corollas too! But that stinks that you can’t modify them in any way over there. The black sheet idea is good. I am now in a minivan and my windows are tinted so I feel much safer and comfortable now. Happy Travels!

You are to be commended about your efforts to live on the road like you do I feel a lot more comfortable with more of my body in the trunk and then you can put like a box that looks like it's a box but you're going to be inside it when you sleep so no see why you're sleeping honey I just a thought you could also put a high-voltage system on so that if anybody touches your car at night look at a nice shock it's a simple battery powered fence charger

I use freecampsites.net and ioverlander.com to find free places to park. The more I do this the more comfortable I get. Having tinted windows or shades to put up will help with the privacy factor. You can do it!

Very creative of you to take the front seat out of your car. I do the same thing when I go camping in Florida and being a bicycle. I always set up a tent to make it look like I'm sleeping in a tent but I sleep in my car. I sleep a little more in the trunk that you do. But I use the exact same setup a sheet of plywood and a foam mat.

I lived in an 01 Camry for a year and I pulled my passenger seat also but 5% tint all around was a must for decent sleep,I tinted it myself buying the tint at Walmart.

A 3 inch foam pad is what I sleep on. Limo widow tint for rear windows and dark legal % for front side windows and a windshield cover from Walmart with be perfect stealth mode for your Camperolla

Also, do you have cooking gear with you? At least the ability to boil water? Good luck to you and would like to know about your other equipment for car camping, hiking, etc if you get a chance. Thanks for checking my video out! I do have a second car camping video that I did at the end of my 4 week road trip. I also have gear videos from a past hike as well as gear lists and blogs on my website - www.whereintheworldissara.com. For this trip I used a jetboil for cooking. I usually keep things basic as I am used to a simple set-up from backpacking long distance trails. Happy Travels!

I might crack my window a little to allow for some air flow and so my windows don't condensate, but that's about it.

You can find someone to trade a van for your Corolla. My son does it all the time. He has only had his license about six months and he’s owned 8 different vehicles. Offer up is one of the apps he uses. Hope this helps 😊

Hi when you go to Walmart you don't need to call and ask for permission for small cars, even if you see signs not overnight parking, just parked next to it, is a stealth camping, you're safe. WalMart only towing your car if you left there 24 hours or more, you don't do that, sometimes I left my car for days and they put a sticker, so what you need to do, you go sleep 7, 8 hours and then go somewhere else, go to the gym, Starbucks, the mall etc..you move your car. I see more problems to park a big RV than a car, I see towing RVs but not small cars, so you're safe, if you have an RV, yes you need permission to stay there a day o couple days, but if you to sleep and then leave don't call WalMart pls.

My state doesn't require inspections, but it wouldn't be too difficult to put everything back in if needed.

"i wish there was more parking lots" ok, but are you ready to pay for stay there? you know, in my country (Bulgaria) some ppl said "why we have to pay for the drinking water from our taps, its given from the god and nature".. good luck to explain them - if they need free water, they can go to some strem and fill some.. no, they want it free, granted from god and the nature, right in their kitchens in the middle of the big city :).
