The 911SC was certainly available with factory fitted whale-tail. We picked up a new guards red 911SC targa from the Stuttgart factory in March ‘78 (ordered it through Porsche dealer in Australia) and it came with a factory all-black rear spoiler. I guess it was chosen from amongst the factory options list. It wasn’t identical to the 930 Turbo whale-tail at the time but was similar in shape and size.

@@24hourgmtchannel64 Nice to hear from you and congratulations on the great Xmas present. Our whale-tail looked like a rubber unit that had been attached to the standard boot-lid …. not like the Turbo at the time which had more of a metal + rubber integrated one. My wife (then girlfriend) and I still smile when we see similar 911s now and recall how we would use the whale-tail as a picnic table for our bread-stick, cheese and wine lunches as we hippied our way around Europe. We had a routine of parking the car out of sight when we were seeking youth hostel accommodation too. Australia had 100% vehicle import duty back in those days but for a few years there was a rule that you could bring a car in duty free if you owned it overseas for 15 months. Anyway have great time with that special car :).

We replaced hundreds of them on Porsche and bmw

That spoiler was a factory option. Looks-wise it's pretty similar to the then-current turbo-spoiler, although I think the turbo's was a bit meatier. IIRC the turbo had a thicker rubber lip and it had a boxy "base" linking the wing to the hood. I think that "box"-design was needed on later turbo models, to make room for the intercooler that was sitting on top of the engine.

@@eppyz Each to their own, I've been offered several Porches to buy for very good prices, turned them down. But then again the same with Ferraris and a bunch of other interesting cars, and turned most of those down as well. I can accept a car needing expensive maintenance if it does what I want in the way I want, and that is where old Porches and Ferraris fail. It's a preference thing but I am not a fan of bad interiors or lackluster performance, regardless of badges. Friends have Porsches etc but they are not my thing. The one car I can accept a lot of flaws from is a Ferrari Testarossa, but I was never in the position to buy one, and honestly it is not that great of a car objectively speaking. Toyota, Mitsubishi and VW have been what I found most agreeable, and then ones that will blow the doors off old Ferraris and Porsches.

@dlkoiter 3 года назад
Please keep in mind that the oil leak near the oil cooler can also be the either the thermostat on top of the engine, the oil pressure switch, the gasket of the crankcase breather or the temp sensor. They are all in the same vicinity near the flywheel side of the engine on the top side. It is actually more common that the leak originates from there than one of the red donuts of the oil cooler itself. On the 3.2 engines there is a thin part in the aluminium of the case and when rebuilding it you have to put some epoxy on there as it can sweat some oil. That part is behind the oil cooler. Also, for the valve covers you can get newer versions with a small bead of silicon on them. Victor Reinz produce these. Especially for the lower ones they help a LOT! Have fun fixing it!

The "heat shield" is actually a heat exchanger. The front and rear spoilers must be mounted together, not just the rear like on this one (as per Porsche and also Paul Frere). If the suspension is set up correctly, there is no need for the spoilers, unless you are racing the car. The 3.3 liter engine is the turbo, different body. An air-cooled 911 engine not leaking oil is a reason for serious concern, as there is probably no oil in it.

I have known the owner for 40+ years. He looked for years for this car and treats it like a baby. It's great he finally found a good honest mechanic! Can't wait to see it at the next Cars and Coffee in Wichita.

That sunroof mechanism is exactly the same as on a 928, only the later has a cover that snaps off for access instead of a zipper. Air cooled 911's had two cams total.... Great video!

Wizard, ~2019-2020: "Electric power tools have pretty much displaced pneumatic tools in general mechanic shops, I'm tired of chasing pneumatic systems salesmen out of the shop" Bendpak, 2021: "Weeezard, we've got some nice pneumatic lifts for you!"

@docontra4921
@docontra4921 2 года назад
@@RockyRepairs Yes, but both require a compressor (and I'm guessing a pretty girthy one for the lifts[1]) plus piping/general setup; which is exactly the sort of thing Wizard did not want/feel the need to upgrade/invest $$$ on. To put in context, in the one video he was complaining about compressed air salesmen, he stated "we didn't even turn the compressor on today" was not an uncommon occurrence. [1]: Haven't rewatched the video, but I believe Bendpak threw the compressor for the whole system with the lifts; they'd "only need to bolt the compressor somewhere and run some pipes/wires" 😅

Hi Car Wizard, super video, with a very special car. This car in this color (Guards Red) was my first 911. My car had 40,000 miles when I acquired it. This model is a true blue-blooded 911, the sound of the engine is utterly unique and still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!. Some kindly advice for your fortunate customer that you might consider sharing. 911's of this age, type, and heritage should and must be kept original. Scrupulously maintaining the originality assures the value and credibility of the car. A soon as you start fitting aftermarket steering wheels, spoilers, wheels, or, god forbid aftermarket body parts, the people that understand and appreciate these cars will then look upon the vehicle with derision. It's like purchasing an original Chippendale cabinet and then swapping out the draw knobs with items from Home Depot. The spoiler on the car is non-standard, the spoiler fitted is from the next generation 911 called Carrera. The spoiler that should be fitted is the same as the unit fitted to the Turbo from this period. The "Carrera" stickers down the sides of the car are not appropriate as it is an SC. Finally, the model designation on the engine cover has been deleted. Maybe the owner is hoping by fitting a Carrera spoiler and Carrera stickers down the side of the car he can make people think it's a Carrera. In my humble opinion, this is a shame. This is an outstanding example and after the repairs, you will undertake, it will be a remarkable example. Keep the excellent videos coming. Best wishes from the UK.

I used to put the inner bands on the boots also till a guy with a drive shaft place told me it is better not to fit it to avoid them from ripping apart when something accidentally hits it on the road surface. With a band on it can not turn back into its original position if it gets twisted. He also said that I must buy a boot that is a bit smaller than the shaft for a tight seal but the outer must be clamped with a band on the CV side. I have been doing it for 8 years now on vehicles and never had any issues. I do see that the boots on the Porsche on the shaft side is a bit too loose to leave it unclamped though. But I think it had issue with boots ripping apart before and that is why it was not clamped. It's just a pitty he did not follow the advice I got by getting a tighter fitting boot
