This video was challenging to make because I really wanted it to be special.
A few weeks ago, I marked five years with my Porsche 911SC. To celebrate this occasion, I have put together a short summary about the car and my experiences with it.
It's often a prop in my videos and photos, but I haven't made a video about it, so here it is.
Here's that Lexus project if you're interested: capturingthemachine.com/pages...

ive had mine 30 years, it's almost 100% original, and has shared so many years of my my life. Yes the SC is timeless, don't change it, don't modify it, curate it for your children, and educate them. There's something soulful that can't be replaced with the new generation. Welcome to the few of us that cherish these pure timepieces.

We've have ours 31+ years, first present from my date, later she married me, after 3 yrs restoring it, our wedding car. Timeless love object for us, as you say never to be sold. Funniest moment in it, crossing a ford, a sudden mist inside as we couldn't see eachother anymore, the airintake sucked all water. Safely reached otherside and won the rally, with wife as navigator! My white '80 Targa perhaps shared the same days of running through the factory, but where the coupes turned left in the assembly line, mine turned right. I'm the third owner and bought mine in 2007, so we've been through a bit more history. Longest single trip so far was 10,000 miles from NC out to Lake Tahoe, then back along a very northern route up into Maine before hooking back south to NC. No plans to ever sell mine either! :)

I really enjoyed the story of your 5 year (+ counting) love affair with your SC! Great photography and well written...kudos! I had my '80 Silver Metallic Targa for 20+ years and >200k miles and also never thought that I would sell her but then I purchased a 2010 C4S and kept both cars for two years and realized I was not using the SC enough and well, these cars need to be properly exercised and I found myself reaching for the C4S keys while the SC became a garage queen. And then someone that had been chasing it for a number of years wanted it bad enough and made me an offer that I couldn't refuse. Having a daughter in medical school made that proposition easy to swallow so now the 997.2 4S 6MT is my love and well, equilibrium has been established and I have the perfect tool for 600 miles days travelling throughout the western US or a run up the Marin, Sonoma & Mendocino coasts. Keep up the great storytelling and if you are ever in the SF Bay Area, raise your hand. I'm also a photographer and would love to share the light and the sounds of our glorious Flat 6s!

Nice car! I had a '78 - the first year for the new SC - for 175,000 miles. Awesome car. Bullet proof as they say. I lived in CA and drove all those great roads. Every morning on the way to work on I-5 I took it up to 100 (provided no ChiPs about). The sound of the engine revving up with the air fan adding to the exhaust note is a beautiful noise unequaled in the world of cars. I drove it like a race car, double clutching and rev matching every downshift, some with heel-and-toeing when braking and downshifting simultaneously was called for. I always wore driving gloves for a good grip on the wheel which reacted to all road anomalies, and they reduced driving fatigue. I'm so jealous! haha

Just discovered your videos. I really enjoy them...very well done. I've owned my Wine red '81 SC Targa for just a few months now, but agree with everything you say about the 911's of that era. They are special...not really fast, but plenty quick enough to be enjoyable, and the analog feel and control feedback is something no modern car offers. I have even come to love the 915 transmission, because it demands precision and attention from the driver. I previously owned a 991 Carrera S, and as wonderful as it was, I like the SC more. I hope you enjoy many more years with The Machine.

@@capturingthemachine I think you’re right and, for whatever reason, the SCs have always remained more affordable than small bumper and later 3.2 cars. The more research I do I find that SCs may be the perfect driver’s 911 in a number of additional ways. Lighter and simpler than the later cars, more rear grip than earlier cars and they have the robust aluminum 3.0 rather than the finickier magnesium 2.7. Everybody I’ve talked to says they’re the most bullet-proof of the early(ish) 911s too. I just got home after driving up the Cali/Oregon coast - it was brilliant! Good weather, light traffic but multiple times an hour I’d think to myself - “imagine THIS in an SC!”
@capturingthemachine
@capturingthemachine 5 месяцев назад
@@bryandickerson5365 All good points! The CIS (injection & engine management on the SC) is more finicky and can be less reliable than the 3.2 Carrera, which had Motronic, and is simpler and more modern. But CIS also makes the SC feel, to me, more lively and revvy than the 3.2. I’ve wanted to do an ‘SC Buyer’s Guide’ video for a while, maybe this year. 😆 I did that drive in reverse in September, it was really special, but too short! To keep better track of your revs while minimizing eye travel from the road to the tach, turn your tach counterclockwise so that 6000 - 7000 is in the 12 o'clock position. No tools or disassembly needed: just grip the edge of the tach and turn. "Everybody" does this haha.

Thanks for posting the vids, as on old geezer living across the pond, who likes to take pics of cars, all be it not very well, I picked up your tips on how I might improve in an earlier vid, now I find you are into Porsche ownership that improves my respect for not only your photographic skills, but your choice of sports car... (-: I owned two Super Carreras over a period of decade or so in the 80`s and 90`s a 77 and an 82. I gave up on Porsche for 30 years and went for something even more basic in terms of driver experience which I have owned for 21 years, but the Porsche bug came back and got to me again. I thought to try to find another SC but eventually ended up in a 991 C4S, not quite the same but perhaps better suits the old man I have become, and my wife can drive it too as it has PDK.. (-: As they say, happy wife, happy life.. BTW the thing that makes an old 911 unhappy enough to create a fuss, is not being used enough... as you found out, it comes alive while you were enjoying covering the miles on the Rally..(-: Thanks again for posting the vids.

As you might expect the bulbous body of the C4S demands to be photographed..(-: Looking for interesting backdrops for whatever old sports car I might be running at the time has ever been an enjoyable pastime too. My first Porsche was a rotted out 912 which I restored. I tracked dented and repaired my 77 SC, and I did have some pics of my 82 SC printed in the PCGB magazine along with a short comparison article I wrote for the mag at the time of the launch of the then new 993 when I drove it, so yeah plenty of memories available to bore the young with... @capturingthemachine
@capturingthemachine 4 месяца назад
Thanks, and congrats on your SC, that's awesome, hopefully you get it sorted soon! I don't work on mine, I have no mechanical abilities unfortunately. Unmetered air, such as an air leak like you mentioned, can definitely cause the CIS to run badly. I also had problems with the warm-up regulator, and there's something called a fuel head that commonly gets gummed up with old fuel and causes problems. I've also had issues with the Lambda ECU, which is a thing for 1980+ years. The main problems I had when initially sorting this car were that it would idle too low when cold, and if you adjusted it to idle normally, it would idle way too high once warmed up. That, plus some hot start issues, which CIS is susceptible to, related to the warm-up regulator I mentioned. A friend of mine is an SC CIS guru, if you are in need of some real expertise he might be able to set you straight: instagram.com/pablo_the_porsche/

Not really too many electric issues, aside from electric window switches that go bad a lot. The CIS, which is the injection system on SCs, can be finicky and complicated, so I would read up on that. I have a chance at getting a 911sc targa manual 20k miles 1 owner. What’s it worth if sorted?

Sorry, I'm not the right guy to ask about values, but it sounds like a good find 👍

Great one. But dude, what's up with the squirrelly music during the final video? :D
@capturingthemachine

Lol, I don't remember what music I used in this one. When I made this, I was still using the free RU-vid Music Library, and kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel for goos tracks. Since then, I've switched to using Epidemic Sound, which is a lot less cheesy 👍

I too had my 81 SC for many years, then out of the blue an offer was tendered; I now rock a 308 GT4 ,’ never say never.. A tasty proposition may indeed be round that next corner!

Great content, thanks! It's making my wallet hurt tho, I'm starting to think air cooled is for me. I've got a lovely 996.1, and no regrets about the purchase, but when the restoration is complete, I'm thinking SC. I can have 2 can't I?😅

All good points. Now the bad. It’s very slow compared to modern vehicles, a mini van will out speed this car. The 915 transmission shifts are long and can’t be hurried. Parts are expensive, labor is expensive and if you need an engine rebuild - it’s as much as buying another 911. Granted it’s sensory experience is like nothing else, not selling mine either. 78sc

A refreshed 915 with a modern shifter makes things much better. My 78 has the European pistons with S cams and I would say that the mini van should remove all baby seat or won't stand a chance, just kidding. But in all seriousness there's only one other thing that can surpass the great feeling of a classic 911... oh hi honey didn't know you were there.

Absolutely magnificent cars to drive I own a 82 targa but I’m alway battling with the overheat my car overheats súper-quick specially on the summer can somebody tell me if this is normal because I took it so many times to the mechanic and he claims there is nothing to fix😒..
@capturingthemachine
@capturingthemachine 2 года назад
Sorry to hear this - what does it do when it overheats - is it running different/smoking, or is it just the gauge saying it's too hot?

I had the same problem, changed the heat sender unit and it was fixed... I checked the temp with laser temp to make shure it was on point ✅️
