I think the greatest thing I did for my hoyas was to move them outside. I live in Houston so I can do that. They only come in if there's going to be a freeze. There on my front porch with a Northeast exposure, but they are never in the sun. They've been outside for about 2 years and some of them have grown so much that I have them on tomato cages as trellises! Not all of them of course but it's just phenomenal to me to have a plant grow one or two feet in the summer! Of course you can't walk on my front porch now but I'm okay with that! Always love your videos, Nick, but especially the ones about hoyas or philodendrons. After a lot of money spent on plants, I figured out that those are the ones I really love.

Nice! I’m in Houston as well and have mine in an E facing window (not enough room to move them outside unfortunately) and they’re also doing really well BUT I’ll keep this in mind for my next apt search - neeeeeed porch space 😅

I do not have a porch either but a large southeast window. I found out that some of them like my carnosa princess do not like the sun. Now she is sitting under a regular light and the leaves are growing larger and the Color is more vibrant. I finally realized that Hoyas are the plants I love the most. I like cat I and orchids too. Maybe because they are more manageable in small spaces

I just bought a nice size macrophylla in an 8” plastic pot at a little boutique plant place that opened this year in south jersey. It looks good, seems to be in a chunky, appropriate grow mix…and had a lot of new vines….but I noticed this week the tips of the vines are drying out. Would you think maybe it needs more water? I usually wait until the pot has that lighter feel when you pick it up, or until the soil feels mostly dry. Maybe macrophylla is a little less happy to dry out all the way? I don’t want to lose this plant!!
@ninabeena83
@ninabeena83 11 месяцев назад
@@geslinam9703 for having such a large leaf their root system is really fine, instead of relying on pot weight or time, try feeling up the leaves - if they feel firm and not at all pliable, you’re good to wait a few days. If they’re starting to soften up, gift it a drink. I find that mine, in my E window that gets an hour or so of “direct” sun every morn, is kind of thirsty, much more so than I originally thought it would be. I started watering more and it took off🚀

My first variegated Obovata Hoya died from underwatering, so now I definitely do water a bit more frequently than I used to but I also appreciate that they are more tolerant of dryness than some other houseplants. I have about 40 now. They do really well in bright rooms in our home. This year, a handful of them are flowering for the first time.

I’m growing all of my Hoya plants outside on a screened and covered patio. They can all see the sky but they don’t receive direct sunlight. They seem to like these conditions and have been growing since I bought them home. I’m glad you talked about watering more often. In the beginning I was following the popular wisdom of letting them completely dry out before watering, but I found out quickly that wasn’t working for me. It’s in the 80s and 90s on my patio and I don’t let them dry out because of the heat. It’s good to know that when I have to move them back inside for the 3 months of cold weather I get, I can keep them less dry than I thought.

Another tip I have learned with my Hoya over the last 8 years is moss poles and fertilizing year around. My Hoya grow year around and do much better with food year around. I mix it up with orchid mix, fish emulsion and kelp and osmacote. I also pot up bigger and doing so I have Hoya that have taken off and try to rule the house since I did so. Pubicalyx, Australis, and Obavata have just taken my greenhouse over. I have a 12x20’ greenhouse in the yard full of 88 different varieties of Hoya and over 600 plants total.

My partner blames you for my hoya collection 😅 Two things I've done to improve: Around watering, getting a moisture meter to keep an eye on them and changing the water I use from tap. And secondly, completely changing the soil from what they came in from the nursery to a repotme mix, I've been blown away at how nice the new growth looks compared to the old. I was always under the impression you should keep them in their pot for the first year. Still learning, as I've only started collecting about a year ago 😊 Ive made the mistake of buying plants I don't have the space for, but I certainly haven't learned from it lol

Sandyg: hi Sandy and fellow hoya lovers. I live in Western Australia and we have very hot conditions. I water about 2/3 a week in summer with a good drenching when the weather is extreme. I cut right back obviously in winter, they also don't like the cold. The fertiliser I use is orchard fertiliser with vit b. The flower just keep on coming. Every environment is different and it takes awhile to sort out what suits your plants. The PH is very critical for the plants, and would you believe not every plant of hoyas are the same. A good orchard potting mix with vermiculite or perlite works well When potting on, a pot just a tiny bit bigger, not too large. Then water them in well with Seasol plant conditioner, leaves all. I hope my very limited knowledge of these amazing plants helps you. If you buy one, you are hooked. Kind regards

These are all great tips. So worried because I neglected my hoya kerrii at my greenhouse for a WHILE, and she was so rootbound and half of her was dead 😭 ... so i cut the dead off and repotted but had no bark or spag or leca (one of my faves) so I resorted to cactus soil. However, I figured it would be warmer where I am and sunnier, so I basically drenched her because she was so parched. Three days lated the soil is STILL damp! I'm so worried but I have no clue what to do. Ever done this? I'm afraid to keep disturbing the roots but I don't want root rot either!

#1 tip is sulfur treatments! Educate yourself about Hoya mites - and treat with sulfur! SO many of my Hoyas that haven’t grown at all are pushing out new growth, and blooming after treating with Hoya. #2 is ensuring the soil mix is proper for your climate. I order from florida and the mix they come in doesn’t dry out quickly enough for my area, I need something that dries out quicker and drains quickly as well!

Hi Nick. I always find your videos on plants really helpful. I've just discovered what you said about watering. My Hoya Krohniana Eskimo, so I forgot to water it for a while and so I discovered the leaves were limp and soft, some even wrinkly.😱 I was shocked, so I immediately watered it. This was three days ago, but I expected the leaves to become less soft and more firm now that I watered it. But they're still soft. How long does it take for the leaves to become firm again? I hope she will perk up again.
@rhodealexandre6583
@rhodealexandre6583 9 месяцев назад
Hoyas roots get damaged by overwatering (root rot) but the roots can get damaged from underwatering as well and I speak from experience. If the pot is heavy from being watered and the leaves are still limp, there is a chance that the roots are affected. One of the reasons may be because you let it dry too long and the plant is receiving a lot of light the roots dried up. Now you should look under the hood and assess the damage. If the roots look healthy and no foul smell, let the root ball out to dry faster then keep it moist (not wet until it recovers. If you do not have time for all this, propagating is your best bet

Thinner leaf Hoyas need watered more often than thicker leaves. When I got into plants 3 years ago no one ever really addressed that. Or went into enough details about it. Everyone said to water them like succulents. Once I figured it out mine all grow a lot faster. I don’t even water my succulents and cacti like everyone says and they growing twice as fast as everyone else’s.
