I just bought my very first Hoya, 2 days ago. It was hidden among other hanging baskets and its a Hoya Carnosa. It has a strip of verigated leaves so it looks super pretty. Time will tell if I'm a good Hoya Mama but the timing of this video is spot on!!
Love your hoyas! 😊 Mine favourite is probably serpens, it's growing so fast and putting out peduncles so 🤞 I can't wait to see the blooms 🥰 But I really love them all, they are so collectable 💚
I just found a variegated hoya compacta at my local hardware store for $8!!! I couldn't believe it 😍 I also recently got a hoya kroniana super silver. I love hoya so much.
I know this video is already a year or more old but I still wanted to chime in that my Hoya carnisa is also a BEAST. Loooow maintenance, grows as if by magic, blooms constantly. Mine came from HD with a mix of classic and queen and also has two vines of pure white leaves. I love that plant. But more than that plant I ADORE my Mathilde. That little thing is such a sweetie, cute plant. I. Adore. Her. She just chugs along. Propogates like a champ.
I recently went through a really bad depression spell and fell out of love with my plants however I've been watching your videos, I'm feeling much better and now I'm ready to get back into my plants ❤️ I lost alot through that time but now I want tonnes of Hoya 🤣🤣
I definitely think of you in relation to Hoya. Everybody has a philo obsession, but your Hoya collection is what stands out and sticks with me the most.
I didn't really thought much about Hoyas but yesterday I found the most beautiful krimson queen, for 19 reais (about around 6 dollars I believe) and I'm sooooo in love with her 😍 she really got my heart
just a note on the linearis: if you’re gonna make longer cuttings (like 3-4 nodes and above) then you should water propogate them, but single node cuttings will die if you try water propogation. i just stick them in the pot and they take off!!
Fern, you are so funny! I love that it took everyone telling you that you are obsessed with hoya for you to realize it 🤣 My favorite Hoya is definitely my sunrise, and for yours I super recommend chopping and propping! They root so fast especially in moss in a prop box. I cut mine and put it in a prop box and it literally had root started the next day, same with my polyneura!
I have found my people. I got into plants a couple years ago to help me cope through my postpartum. Now they just help me cope through being married 😂 Plants are so therapeutic to me. My sister thinks I'm crazy, because I (allegedly) only talk about my plant babies. Finding your channel, and other plant channels, have definitely let me know im not alone in this plant loving craziness. 🩷🩷
I got my Hoya linnearis in March and it’s about 4 feet long and it’s practically spilling out of its plastic 8inch pot. I bought it on Etsy for $80 and was expecting it to be small…imagine my surprise when I opened up the box to find such a massive one. It hangs on my shower bar by a window.
Fern! I absolutely adore your name. 🥰 So pretty, so lovely. This video on your Hoya is FREAKING AWESOME!! Yes! I love it! Love seeing your Hoya varieties…how and where you grow them, your care tips and your perspectives on each of them. I really admire your videos, your plant collection, and the vibe and energy you bring to your channel. You’re incredible! Thank you for sharing! Thank you for always posting badass content. I look forward to each of your videos and IG posts! Planty and Lifey content ! Hah! And your cutie puppers! THAT HOYA HEUSCHKELIANA VARIEGATA IS A STUNNER! She is a sexy beast! That variegation gets me every time. I’m such a sucker for variegation.
Glad to hear you're making your own Orchid / Hoya spray. I've watched you and Firefly in the room talk about how wonderful the results are so I looked it up. A website called Garden myths called-out the Orchid spray as BS and recommended a diluted tomato fertilizer as a much less expensive option. Also desert plants of Avalon recommends tomato fertilizer for epiphytic cacti. I really enjoyed this video.
Oh Lordy! I have been researching like crazy to find an a 'recipe' for a DIY version! Store bought orchid spray is so expensive for the small amount you get. I knew there has to be a way to do it myself. What is your mixing ratio?
@@TheConfusedhero I just eyeball it and heavily dilute tomato fertilizer depending on the plant I'm using it on. There's more detail on Garden myths.com. just Google "Miracle-Gro orchid fertilizer Gardenmyths.com"
I can confirm that. My orchids barely gave me any flowers when i used the spray. So I was kinda gave up and just gave them whatever i had in hand which was tomato fertilizer....and Boom........they all put out big flower spikes , some bloom twice. my polychilos phal put out 4 spikes this year🥰. My hoya mathilde and thomsonii seem to go berserk as well 🤔or it's just their characteristic? I'm new to hoya. I use tomato fertilizer for all of my plants . I diluted 4x the regular strength for orchids and hoya.
So glad to find you today & I look forward to viewing your previous clips too...😊 You're the best with sharing the information as you did about this AMAZING plant called Hoya ❤ I have acquired 6 various types & the first one has started blooming.... They're truly gorgeous in bloom. But I'm still learning about them and the Trellising you mentioned is my most important aspect, to follow... So THANKS HEAPS for your cool presentation ✨️💛✨️
Any large leaves Hoya is going to be my favourite. If it is variegated or better splashy, I am in plant heaven 😀 However I do have soft spot for Obovata splash and The Lisa. You are the first I’ve heard explaining Hoya watering that way and you are absolutely right. I do not know about very old Hoyas but the young ones need more water then what people have been recommended. I almost lost my 2 first Hoyas because I was following the “ Let dry out before watering or water when lower leaves are wrinkled. Thank you
Thank you for saying that about watering Hoya!! I never let my Hoya get wrinkly and just water when the soil is dry. It’s worked for me and then for years
i bought myself a hoya just yesterday! im new to plant parenthood, but i figured if i can keep a spider plant alive, hoyas were the next step! luckily, the hoya was on sale! i might go back for the other one because there were two...
Not Hoya related, but I would loooveee a video talking about crawling philodendron!! I've been growing more and more interested in them, but all of mine are growing up poles :)) love uuuu
Yeeeees I love my krimson queen! She's been giving me flowers for the last month and has been putting off so many new shoots. Brings me so much joy. In the flower category I also have to give a shout out to multiflora, pretty prolific and really unique flowers. I agree about the sunrise being a fast grower. A friend gave me a 2 leaf cutting in a tiny 1.5 inch nurse pot not long ago and it's already trippled the leaf count. I'd also shout out the sp. burtoniae as a fast grower. I cannot believe how much mine has grown over the winter and it's picked up even more speed now that the days are longer.
Fern, your alocasia silver dragon looks insane back there! Its giving very spooky vibes. It almost looks like a spider or an eye! Very cook background plant. Love your channel!
I just got a krimson queen and a carnosaa and I’m so excited to see them grow. My compacta is putting off a tiny vine, I cannot wait for mine to be big like yours! Ps I love you fern 🥹 my favorite person in the plant community
Concerning blooms there are also Hoya David Cummingii, Hoya Memoria and Hoya Lockii. They don't stop blooming. They bloom and rebloom and really go nutts on the blooms. The first two have a heavy, sweet scent which is quite strong, so mind that. It reminds you of caramel, but also fruit yoghurt about to go bad. The Caudata is an eager bloomer once you got her to bloom. Mine likes a couple of hours of direct sun light and frequent watering. She has flowered her first peduncle and immediately started budding back up. She's also working on several other peduncles. The second one will bloom any day now. Her flowers are even more adorable in person than they are in photos. Just a bliss to have them 😊
You could always cut a section of you your sunrise off and prop it too make your pot fuller. I have ours growing right up against a west facing window. The plant looks so fabulous sunstressed and is already putting out blooms. The blooms are pretty but honestly I'm mostly loving the colours of her sunstressed leaves❤
I trellised my Hoya compacta! It totally works but they’re heavy so it requires a lot of leverage & attention as it grows. Absolutely beautiful though!
I love all Hoyas. I have 4. The regular green carnosa. I got one and grew one from that. I have two tri color that I put in one pot. It is lovely variegated. Both have grown for me really well
I agree with you on liking many of the common varieties. Like, pubicalyx is my absolute favorite. I tend to prefer the blade like leaved ones, pubicalyx, sheperdii, wayetii, etc. However, I did luckily find both krimsons , princess and queen, at Kroger, and they are so rewarding, the best growers. They make me love them, too.
I totally got Hoya compacta because of you!!! 1 normal and 1 outer variegated. (I also killed a mauna loa 😐😰)BUT the 2 survivors both took a full year to start growing! I love them both so much and I was sooo excited to finally see the new growth.
This video was super helpful thank you. My boyfriend and me are on a quest to buy our first baby hoya. We love their bloom so much. I can't wait to share with him what i learn from you. Have a nice day.
recently picked up a krohniana *super silver* and you are absolutely correct! growing so fast. got super lucky and found a 4 inch pot with 5-6 trailing vine/tendrils (for $20, insanely cheap) and each of the vines is already growing in with so many leaves! absolutely cannot wait for this one to bloom! hope to find the krohniana black soon.
You actually just got me to buy my very first Hoya!~ (I have a few cuttings but they are too small to appreciate yet) I could not understand the hype about them but the crimson queen really caught my attention. Just ordered one from Steve's Leaves. I hope I love it as much as you love yours! Thanks for the video (even though I ended up spending money that I really shouldn't have! 😆🤣)
I am obsessed with my Hoya krohiana Eskimo, which has super silver leaves with a dark green speckle, it has just started to grow and bloom. The flowers are so cute and frilly and the scent is amazingly strong for such small flowers. I also have a Hoya australis Lisa which took forever to adjust. For about a year it did absolutely nothing, it just sat there, I bought it as a baby plant with 6 leaves, and since spring it took off, giving me 4 new leaves already. I also absolutely love the Hoya bella, I had one years ago, but it unfortunately died after a real nasty spider mite infestation. I’ve been wanting one ever since. The next time I come across one in a garden center, it will be coming home with me 😏That Crimson Queenyou have is magnificent 😍
Loved this video so much! Great information and tips throughout the video along with seeing your beautiful Hoyas. A perfect plant video! Many thanks for this and all that you do! 👏👌🪴🥰
I have a Hoya Australis Lisa and can confirm that the variegation is similar to the Heuschkeliana. I would loooove a Heuschkeliana but I’ve never seen one here in Puerto Rico, same goes for Alocasia Dragonscale. Hopefully I’ll be able to find them soon.
Fern, your videos are always such a pleasure to watch. I really appreciate that you take the time to be as thorough as possible about whatever topic you film.
I loved this! And yes, Hoya leaves are larger and darker with less direct light! Thank you for the nice video! Also get yourself a Lisa if you can; they are so beautiful...like the Heuschkeliana but a bit bigger and much more shiny!
I saw a 4m long and really full Hoya Linearis basket at a gardencenter last week. It was so amazing! Just super long and full😍😍😍 sadly my seelings aren't high enough 😂
Speaking my language. 95% of my collection are Hoya grown in Pon. Swear by orchid spray. Your collection is beautiful as are you. Always enjoy your videos
Your videos are getting so much more informative and I love them. I prefer better gro to miracle gro mist. I feed my Hoya good too!!! And I never let them get bendy to water. It is 108 degrees here so I am watering every 3 days right now. I hate that taco bendy advice. Keep up the great work. 💚💚💚
I loved your green Hoya Bella! But for some reason I can never bring myself to actually get one myself. I think I just like them more in pictures/videos than in person
For the blooms I thought you would have said the shepherdii, mines been the only one to bloom for me. Last year it bloomed once , this year mine had 6_8 blooms ! I was surprised since the plant itself looks to be struggling. It's by far my favorite that's bloomed! I have yet to see a bloom on my Bella...waiting on her to bloom, she may become my favorite!
omg I love ur hoyas, i have hoya compacta, hoya carnosa, hoya kerrii, hoya crimson queen and princess♡ theyre my favourite type of plants. i want to get more and more but here in Argentina they are so rare and i havent seen more varieties. mine are tiny so i hope they grows so much like yours. i really enjoy ur content ♡ love u fern.
Hoya DS70 has been super cute under my clumsy care. I let it bone dry for two weeks and it looked practically dead but miraculously after two very intense waterings and completely replacing her previous soil looks like a champ. It actually grows pretty fast! My krohniana doesn’t look so hot atm and even fell off to the ground the other day. Will do the same treatment because I bought her two months ago and haven’t paid much attention to her ever since…
Hi Watching from NZ. I have one Hoya when I was bought 6yrs ago they said it's Hoya Carnoza I was excited to see Blooming Flowers . But glad to say it's not a Hoya Carnoza it's a Hoya Hawaiian Purple 😅
Hi Fern! Do you have a video on/ or can you tell me what camera you use for videoing? I love how your camera focuses on the plants so well and you are such an inspiration for me!
To suggest anyone would ever click off rather than look at your faves again lolol As if they're not also our faves 😅 I can't say that I think of you and hoya specifically overall but there are FORSURE a couple that I think of you for. I.E. compacta, krimson queen 💯 straight up inspired both of those purchases for me. Mine are the before pics and yours are the afters lolol
