Psychologically speaking, those silly terms they coin such as "career cushioning," "quiet quitting," and other such things are made to gaslight you into thinking you are undeserving of anything. The smart move to play is to act oblivious to these terms. Gaslight the gaslighter and tell them "what are you talking about" or "are you okay." Act normal, as if you are dealing with a toddler. These things are coined on purpose to demoralize and gaslight you.

The next year there was a downturn, I was out the door in a wave of layoffs. Since then, my dedication is to ME, Inc. Any job I bring value to my employer, but I absolutely don't "count on" my employer. I actually prefer contracting. I'm there for a year or two, then move on. Very clean arrangement.

But I’ve already promised myself that I’ll be a happy freelancer after becoming a permanent resident of my new home, which is going to happen in less than two years, fortunately.

Just over a month ago, my supervisor sent me a Zoom meeting invite with only “Mandatory meeting” in the subject line. I thought it was about a new department process I’d have to learn. When I entered the meeting, there was only one other person in there, and I didn’t recognize the person’s name. I said “hello” and the person remained on mute. I looked the person up in the company directory and discovered she’s with HR. I messaged my supervisor and told her I was in the meeting, and she told me she’d be right there. Once she joined, she surprise-attacked me with some scripted explanation about my position being eliminated and why, then she had the HR person explain the rest. No warning or anything. Luckily, I was told they would help me find another position within the company within 60 days, and I was able to land one in just under two weeks. But it was a reminder of how employers really operate and how you should ALWAYS be “career cushioning.”

Anyone still using that gap nonsense this far into the 21st century is a relic to be avoided. Unless you actually like that constant thumb holding you down that was so popular among employers of the 80s and 90s. What if you're a contractor who scored 3 times his usually yearly salary by taking a project in a very nasty place, and decided to spend the other 6 months in Thailand instead of rushing back to work? I have many gaps over the last 2 decades because I really like taking as much time off as possible NOW. Why wait until I'm old and feeble? Makes no sense. Sometimes I suspect it's the protracted jealousy one might expect from a petty interviewer who spends life chained to a desk and makes half as much. Usually I laugh off the issue, knowing the interview is over the moment they said Gap (goes for the clothing outlet as well). If I deliver the goods, who should be making my schedule?

@@JJDK485 I am extremely well, thank you. I am now retired now and that was many years ago and I just do contract work on a personal subcontractor level. I was raised not to take or give shit. I took no shit from any employer nor in the ARMY, Active nor State Guard. The State tried to screw me out of my 20 years by letting me go at 18, as was the States right to do, to get my retirement as doing 7 years in the active service during the war with 20 years total service would get me Full active retirement and not reserve retirement that was close to 1/2. So I enlisted/transferred to the ARMY Reserves active service for another 4 years and received my retirement. Screw the State! They pay 25% of my retirement! The rules on service retirement change and get complicated with mixed active, reserve e, and guard service. Serving in wartime and in combat as many reservists and guards personnel have. It can get really screwed up to figure and a lot of states try to not let their guard personnel get their 20 years so they do not have to pay out retirement. So I wonder where companies learn how to screw over employees. :) Who better to learn from than the government! My point is, read and understand your contract of employment and know your rights under State and Federal Law. And if you are contracted out to work in a foreign country, know the labor laws for guest workers in that country and be aware as a non-citizen you have no rights under their labor laws! Be sure you have a valid and current passport and visa in your name and not under the company that you are contracted to work for. If shit goes south, you can use your personal visa as a tourist visa for at most 30 days and apply for an extension and usually get it. In most decent and friendly countries anyways. I have been offered work in Middle Eastern countries and former Eastern block Countries and India and China, F that crap! Especially hostile countries. The money is not with you losing your life or liberty and not getting any payout or compensation! People need to understand what they are getting into. I just now work to stay up on the tech of my field, no more. And I know I can walk at any time and be OK. I am retired and have no debt and own my home and property outright. Debt is the most common weapon a company will use to keep and screw employees. Your employer knows what debt you have and will use it against you. Goddess Bless and be and do well.

To ensure no slavery like life, girls should remember to take the birth control pill daily and both guy/girl should use protection and consider Tubal Ligation which is a quick procedure. You will just condemn your new child to increasing poverty and freedomless slavery and these control/money/job trends worsen. It’s always easier to find a job when you have a job. An old boss of mine told me that I should always be interviewing. You want to keep up that skill, and because you might find a better opportunity. Follow the Ferengi rules of acquisition. 7. Keep your ears open, 9. Opportunity plus instinct equals profit. Your company will not hesitate to fire you, that should go the same for you. You should not hesitate to fire your employer. There is one caveat. Good companies are rare, so if you’re in one treasure it. But the moment you start seeing warning signs of change that will negatively affect you, that’s when you start really looking for a new job. Idk why but I never thought of just continuously applying for jobs and getting HRs’ contact info. I was always just focused on getting a job, trying to do well enough in it to keep my job, and figure things outs later if I got laid off. I now realize how risky and irresponsible this is. And even though I’ve asked for a career advice from multiple people in my college’s career center and friends in the industry, this particular advice of always having a plan B never came up. Everyone I know has just been instilled with the idea of devoting themselves 100% in hopes of keeping the job with no guarantee that it will work. I’m definitely gonna start applying for jobs again despite already having an internship lined up for this upcoming summer. Definitely wouldn’t hurt to have more contacts when the time to apply for full time jobs comes around.

The only time I didn't have a "career cushion" was when I got laid off, but I kept my network certifications active, so I found a new job in two weeks. So yeah, I agree with you. It's literally COMMON SENSE to not quit your job until you have another one lined up. These people sensationalize everything.
@ReivecS

Only 90 seconds in but I feel like I should mention that about 15 years ago I had a manager (who I didn't even think was a particularly good manager) at a major corporation explicitly advice her entire team to always be looking at other job opportunities (probably the most redeeming value she had). Her logic was that you want to be well practiced in interviewing and that if you are at a large corporate public company layoffs can always happen. Don't be caught off guard. She didn't want people to leave her team but she basically just wanted people to be open with her if they definitely wanted to leave. Basically she wanted you to be interviewing but not WANT to leave and if you actually wanted to leave to talk to her about it. A solid strategy in my opinion, our retention was quite high at the time. Now this basic life advice is treated like a negative trend.

This month laid off 1300 people due to an "oversite". I only got to keep my job because im so low down the chain they wouldn't be saving a lot letting me go. Always have a plan B

I have always known Career Cushioning as Common Sense...

Why do people make up all these silly names for "job trends"?? WTF is "quiet quitting" but "I'm slacking off at the job"? WTF is "career cushioning" but "I'm getting a Plan B just in case my employer goes crazy and decides to get rid of me"? FFS 🤣

I used to just do my job as asked and went home but that's now called quiet quitting because I also didn't wash my boss's car and do additional work for no additional pay.

Media and the gov will make any excuse to blame workers for looking out for their own best interest. It's utterly disgusting.

Terms like "career cushioning" and "quiet quitting" are for people who have the good jobs. Because the idea that you would wanna leave your job is so foreign to that class of people. But if you work in a factory, let's say. Of course you wanna work somewhere else eventually. You're not getting into the "c-suite" at a factory.

I'm going to apply to various companies as a "Chief Scientist of Workplace Culture". Maybe I too can be overpaid to state the obvious.

You see, it happened. I was worried that shit like this would happen. You have a lot of these “career influencers” on the internet that create these catch phrases and terms for shit that the regular, average, everyday worker has been doing FOR YEARS and turning it into LinkedIn buzzwords for their posts and videos. It didn’t bother me until now that I’m hearing about this new “trend” lol. Not to be shady but, Sooner or later you’re gonna have these people making videos such as “When you know it’s the right time to career cushing.” And “How career cushioning can benefit your career!”. As if the regular person really needs a video like that to help them make that decision. I guess the benefit from these things is the fact it gets the word out about what employees are doing to take back their power in the work force. However, I don’t like that certain people will run with this and act like they were part of a new thing that nobody else has ever heard about which is just not true.
