Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on RU-vid. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

When my son was with me, I had given him 18 years of care (he was a drowning victim). He was totally involved but I never had caregiver burnout because I was grateful to have him with me. That being said, there were times I needed time to myself. Those were infrequent because I didn’t have anyone who could be with him while I was “doing something for myself”. I would give quite a bit to have him here tho. Love you guys, linda

I’ve lost a son as well. 6 months ago and he the cancer diagnosis only 3 months. A mother’s strength is immeasurable. The only reasons that my strength hasn’t ebbed is that I have 2 more sons and grandchildren to be strong for and the puppies he and his brother gave me 2 days before that word entered our lives. And, of course, I know where he is now and how he is. Good luck and love fellow Mom. We will go forward with our memories.

I met my husband (after being married before as was he and other relationships) and I had six kids and he had three. We were in our early 40s. I found out I had a badly twisted fallopian tube and something else that kept me from conceiving as well as starting menopause very early(mid 40s) so our efforts to have our own little one never came to fruition. Our kids are all grown and we are always alone now. We’ve been together almost 20yrs, and he is my family and I am his. However, we have three frenchies and they are definitely our furbabies! We are a family even tho they can’t talk (but they do bark ALOT at the dumbest things) but we care for them almost to the point that I think a baby or toddler would be easier sometimes! Families are the ones you love and feel at home with. Of course we see our kids and grandkids at times and siblings, nieces and nephews, but as far as our own little home unit goes, we are definitely a family of five! And one day we will be back down to two (😭) and we will still be a family.

You two are too funny!! The previews for the next part are such good examples of your light hearted banter. I loved Hannah's reaction to getting married again, Shane just sliding in renewing vows and the minute discussion. It was refreshing to see that you two were, as always, open and honest about caregiver burnout and disagreements between yourselves. Looking forward to part 2, which just came up on my feed now.

I’ve been watching you guys since Shane was on my last days. You guys have not aged a day, and I can’t believe that old video was five years old. I do kind of miss Hannah being like, “no.” 😂 the exasperation with a partner is all too true. Hopefully, if you guys do renew your vows, you do it in a way that is true to your wants and not about pleasing other people or inviting too many people that you don’t know. I would say do it again, but for yours yourselves only and maybe the people that really matter.😊

Talk about caregiver burnout, I've been caregiver to my special needs kid for over three and a half decades now, so I've been on caregiver burnout for years now, and have been emotionally numb for sometime because of it, so much so, that I've had no reaction to the many deaths of family and friends since 2021, not that I don't care or anything, I just feel like I'm not really living myself, so everything just goes by and nothing matters.

Hi Shane and Hannah! I'm a little curious how it works with shane's hospital stays. Does it cost you a lot of money to get different treatments at the hospital? The reason I'm wondering is because I live in Sweden and we have free healthcare and I've heard that it can be very expensive to end up in a hospital in the US. I’m the same way with my daughter (she’s turning 31). It only takes that ONE time!! LoL 😂 But that’s what mommas do. We look out for and protect our young! And whether they’re 30 or 50, it doesn’t go away! Even with boys but not as much. Of course I understand my mom better now (tho she has passed) than I did when I was the daughter. I think the caregiver burn out and what did Hannah’s parents think questions are related. As a parent (my kids are still young teens) I think I would be concerned, at first, about my child putting someone else so far above themselves in that way and would they get a break and that kind of thing; making sure that my child is caring for themself and being cared for as well. In y’all’s case it’s clear that’s not happening and it wouldn’t have taken long for that concern to subside. Honestly that will probably be a concern no matter the ability of their future partner; the disability takes it up a notch. If my child’s future partner (or them) decided to get a PhD when they had 3 little kids I’d be concerned too.

Just don't do what I did several year's ago after I firstgot injured. My wife of 44 years now went into a store to buy something. Beings that Im in a wheelchair I cathed into a empty paper drink cup with a lid in the center cup holder. My wife came out and picked the cup up and before I could stop her she took a sip out of the straw. I thought she was going to kill me. It was funny for me at least.
