I interviewed Carl in February 1988 (for my radio program) - he was caughing throughout the interview, and he kept caughing over the next many months leading up to the US Olympic trials (where he tested positive for remedy written in Chinese against caugh; but it contained ephedrine, so he tested positive, but was later cleared to compete according to the rules)! Carl is even caughing in this video - only a moment before the race starts!
well yall know he and the rest of team USA were cheaters so lets cut to the chase was involved in Athletics back then so its was real show when they occasionally change the hours of the events ok the peop;e were rushing to the bathrooms to take their pills and essentilly those pills and all stimulants would help u if u were really good otherwise good luck
This was a month before Johnson tested positive for Stanazolol at the Olympics. It was also a month after Lewis tested positive for 3 separate substances at the US Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. The difference being that Lewis's positive was covered up by US authorities. That wasn't found out until 2001. Lewis later admitted he was only one of hundreds of athletes that had their positive tests hidden by US track & field
SSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHH don't burst the bubbles of the NPCs !!!! They must stay ignorant of the fact that 99,9999999% of all world level athletes are on PEDs.
i remember i was at a track meet in California where they raced and johnson was on steroids.. so me and my cousin who also ran track and are like 11.. run to the track and ask for ben's autograph.. and he ignored us and told us to get out of here.. then sadly as we watched 2 white kids came up and said samething as us and he was like sure anything.. and did all kinds of stuff for them.. then we saw carl lewis my favorite (i had his hair cut) we ask him for a autograph and he took off his shoe he just won with and gave one to each of us!!! autographed!!! :) thanks carl i still have the shoe! :)
@@omnigeddon That is true... They took nothing from him and everything from Ben Jhonson! That it ture! Lewis: 'Who cares I failed drug test?' | Athletics | The Guardian
@@bobdobric6787 it was still there. He ran 9.92 in the 1988 Seoul 100m final. He ran faster at Seoul than he did in this race. Indeed, after Johnson had his two world records removed from the record books, Carl's time at Seoul became the official world record for the event. He ran faster yet again at the 1991 World Championships where he set a WR time of 9.84
@@ivanjulian2532 look at the screen. The world record at the time was 9.83 run by the gentleman in Lane 8, Mr Calvin Smith. Left college and never used a coach, trained in a field and still the fastest man bar the junkie gang.
Lewis tested positive for an amount so small that by today's drug standards it would be a negative result. Johnson on the other hand....a cheat!! He couldn't even admit a false start and showed lack of sportsmanship in waving his hand away at official....guy disrespects the sport
Carl Lewis ran with such composure and with an amazing high knee. This gave him such a large stride pattern when compared to his competitors. Thus he was nearly always able to make up ground on them in the second half of his 100 meter races. The way he caught and passed this talented field was testimont to his amazing technique and talent. He kept increasing his work rate and speed just at the moment most of the field were marginally decreasing theirs.
La génération de fast food vous voulez tout rapidement hhh je me rappelle j'avais 12 ans nous attendons cette cource depuis un an ça était comme une finale de coupe du monde hhh
Carl didn't even lift weights much until Ben beat him. I have friends from the USA team during that era. I saw Carl at a meet when he was 18 and still in High School. He nearly jumped out of the long jump pit in Albuquerque. He didn't know what a steroid was at that time and he was beating everybody in 3 events. He was the best natural sprinter I have ever seen. His technique was flawless. His ability to get up vertically and stay in the air for the long jump was incredible. He ran 5 events in many meets when the other sprinters ran 1, 2, or 3 at the most. He was the best speed athlete in Track and Field history.
Yeah, so many people slinging mud on here that everyone was on steroids and not just Ben. Bottom line is, removing the question of steroids, Ben wouldn't even be within 8 feet of Lewis, and neither would anyone else.. Lewis was an incredible athlete that may have been lab enhanced at some points in his career, Ben's career was lab made.
Yes, but Reynolds was on steroids and was caught later on. Previous generations athletes like Lee Evans' (1968) or Edwin Mose's (400 m hurdles - 1976) were pure.
Actually it is Carl Lewis sister Carol Lewis...who was also a 1984 Olympian in the Long Jump. She now is a premier Track N Field corespondant and expert that covers most top track n field Championships for the United States. If you here a woman talking in the back ground during most track n field championships its most likely her.
Raro que nunk en competencias olimpicas les hayan descubierto dopajes a los deportistas de USA?.Todas han sido cuando ya han estado fuera de competencias
Lolol i thought exactly the same. During Ben's annoyed walk at approx 6.40. i could almost his head thinking, "I'm nnnever going to be outjuiced again" Lololol
Looks like only very few of us here comment about the beauty of that race in itself. Drug or not, it's a great race. with Lewis over celebrating like he's won the olympic final. Great technique though. & Christie aged 28 but not at his peak yet, he actually ran his best races between 31 and 35 years-old. Check out Calvin Smith lane 8, he almost caught Lewis!
@@hardcorehousei don’t know what Christie was using but he only started running seriously in his mid-20s (a couple of years before this race) so I don’t know if that had some impact on his continuing to run elite times well into his 30s?
I found Carl very annoying to listen to but he was the most beautifully gifted sprinter. Best action ever. So fluid and graceful - like a cheetah. Best long jumper ever, too.
he tested positive to for ephedrine in 1988 but the US anti doping agency covered up the violation. I've taken sudafed for colds when playing hockey or running and I never noticed any kind of power boost from them. Its probably more psycological than anything else
No! Lewis tested positive too. We all know that. Not at that particular time. Johnson tried to cheat in the Olympic games. Lewis cheated a year before that. Marion Jones and others have been caught too.
About 60 or 70m mark Ben Johnson’s right foot actually crosses the line. His upper body and arm are in CARL Lewis’s Lane! Should he have been disqualified?
He was coming off a hamstring injury. When he was asked if he wants to race it he replied that he knew he was going to lose and just wanted to see where he’s at. This really shows carl’s arrogance, he wins a pointless race and acts like he won the olympics. I always preferred ben’s humble approach. He performed and that was it.
@shaanee- What he trained himself to do was to stop anticipating the gun. The False Start Detection System analyses pressure on the starting blocks from 0.3 seconds before the gun to 0.7 seconds after the gun. So the runner has to start exerting increasing pressure on the blocks 0.3 seconds BEFORE the gun and reach the maximum allowable force 0.7 seconds AFTER the gun to be hit with a false start.
Ben’s coach Charlie Francis wrote in his book that Ben coming off his injury still not at peak fitness, getting a bad, for Ben, start and swerving all over his lane barely lost this race. Francis knew even from the loss Ben would win in Seoul a month later.
Ben Johnson should never have told them he had been doping for 7 years when they caught him;Biggest mistake. So he lost his 9.83 world record too.The others were all doping too.
@@cedric1234205 True. You watch a video of Ben Johnson in 1984 and he has basically the same build as Carl Lewis. Then you see him in 1986 and he looks like he put on 20 pounds of pure muscle and suddenly he explodes out of the starting blocks. Pretty blatant to the casual observer.
All these athletes are on drugs. If you think that they are Not you are Stone Cold naive. Too much money involved. And they got the best doctors and scientists to mask and cover their tracks.
My comment was in regard to Johnson's lack of ethics. Many athletes have been found guilty of doping. In Johnson's case, rather than admit to it and take responsibility, he feigned ignorance, then blamed his coach and even threw his teammates under the bus - a total scum. And even though many athletes do juice or other supplements, it was immediately and blatantly obvious in johnson's case because his appearance and performance changed radically between when he was cycled off and on the drugs. Carl Lewis's performance was consistent.
The masses like to think they know but in truth no proof whatsoever he was on the type of eastern block steroid/gh cocktail the Canadians and FloJo were on.
There was proof of Carl Lewis failing drug test, he failed 3 in one year and they just let it go then another one that he said he accidentally took and they took his word for it and let it go. He admitted his self and said everyone was doing it and got away with it
Ben ran 10.0 in this race finishing 3rd. He looked rather slim at first glance. I wonder if he laid off the PEDs to gauge where he truly was, then seeing how poorly he performed upped his juice for the Olympics, because by the time he got there his physique was markedly larger than what we see here only a month before. Of course, we all know how well he did at the Olympics and what all transpired and why. And of course, we know through evidence and admission that nearly all the racers in the Seoul 100 meter final were PED cheaters. Ben at least comes off as a sympathetic figure. Carl Lewis even after all these years comes off as an arrogant prick. His "gold" medal should be revoked as well, except the IOC stating that it was after the statute of limitations and therefore too late to do anything about it.

Ben was in TV-commercials in Finland back in the 80's. He was drinking milk. We called him maito-Ben (milk-Ben). He got he's speed by drinking pure milk!
