I hadn't heard about the french fries but we sure missed the mushrooms on our last cruise. Happy to hear that they are bringing back the fresh cuts though.....love them!!!
I want to know what they were doing before Guy's came around because their burgers were still pretty good before Guy's. I remember going back to the 90s I was still getting fresh cooked burgers from the lido grill.
Our first cruise was 2004 on the Liberty and it was fabulous we actually started planning our 2nd cruise before the end of our 1st. The food was WONDERFUL, we thought what could possibly be better than this. We ate on the Lido Deck for lunches, at the Buffet every morning and five nights and in the Main Dining twice. We have gone on many cruises since and have noticed the the QUALITY of food has diminished over the years. I rate it up there with Old Country Buffet and Golden Coral level of food now. So Guys Burgers, Pizza and Deli Sandwiches or sometimes eating in Ports became a main staple on our last 2 cruses. So Yeah for Guys Burgers! Yeah for the Cruisers!
Hi Don, I was în the food distribution business for 45 years, frozen fried are typicaly 2 to 3 times more expansive than fresh cut fries and skin are left on, they do have to be handled a little differently.
I enjoyed the fries they had.. the fresh ones. Heck no to those frozen. They really pissed me off when they took the sautéed mushrooms off the Guys toppings bar.. I often would just get those yummy fries and top them with everything. But since covid they took away the mushrooms, which gave Vegans a way to enjoy something from Guys
I can understand how folks miss a special treat such as guys fries- it’s something that I guess they look forward to them. It’s like Royals raisin bread, to me.
I was on Carnival last month and whatever fries they were using were very good. I witnessed people order fries only. An interesting thing I didn’t notice; when looking on the hub app for options they do not list guys as an option for lunch or even the availability hours. I found that to be interesting.
The only thing that I would put on my Guy's burger were the sauteed mushrooms. NOW they need to bring back the omelets that are actually what the customers want. She is upset that she can no longer get one with spinach.
Fries are a big thing! I remember back when McDonalds had fresh cut fries, while the burger was just a burger, the fries made the meal. Today we have generations that are just now experiencing fresh fries and falling in love with them like we did.
I don't have a problem with frozen fries. Most restaurants are using them and there's no problem. I do miss the sauteed mushrooms, which have been removed.
Guys fries at the beginning were very good. They were also doused with tons of spices and the last two cruises there were hardly a sprinkle on them. Disapointing. Actually I’m surprised that they pay any attention at all to the reviews and comments! They never reply back with an acceptance nor an apology. Ok Don, you are in Ontario so you know of Harvey’s. They used to serve fresh cut fries. I hadn’t been in a Harvey’s in years, then when out on the road doing my sales trips one day which was also many years ago I stopped into a Harvey’s in Brontë ON. Got. A fry, went out to the car, opened the bag, THEY WERE FROM FROZEN! It was so sad! I marched back in and said what’s this? They’re frozen! What happened to real potatoes!? I rarely went there before as I said but I maybe go there once in a two year time span. It was Sad to learn Canada’s favourite burger chain cheaped out.
I prefered the old venue before Guy's. The fries were not seasoned. Now I have to get fries at the buffet or MDR if they have them. I do wish they would bring back the flat iron steak in the MDR the strip loin is horrid. Miss the bread bowls they used to have .
I so agree with special food items and ways of serving that add to a cruise and if you take away too manyoptions that a cruise was famous for...no good. The cruise price including elevated fast food is what Carnival is known for. I want to see at the very least place mats back in the main...it just bothers me not to have a clean cloth over a fast wiped table when you open your silverware in the dining room!!!...I think this huge venue would get back to what it was...still a fine dinner with a certain well prepared tasty hot level and done well enough quality, Though not as fancy as other mainstream and premium and deluxe lines...it was still very good and may choices..that were maybe pieces of a good shell fish over a whole big shell fish but still very good...maybe a lunch size sirloin over a T-bome but a nice little steak and extra for fancier cuts. And the one more special prime rib and small lobsrer night. They put just a little mpre shine on the table and say no to the baseball hats and scruffy unhemmed holy jeans...still keep it Carnival Casual it is but a but more class and comfortable proper behavior raises up the reputation and comfort and lessons lousy behavior even on the short cruises.
My son loves Guys Burgers and the fries. I lost count how many he ate. Not quite as many self serve ice creams he ate but close. Looking forward to a January cruise on Carnival. 6:22
I know cruisers who say Guy's burger is the main draw for cruising with Carnival. Never been on CCL personally, but first it was the hours available then it's the fries next could have been the bun or meat used if no one complained.
Great snack idea. Get an order of fries at Guy’s then go to the condiment bar add shredded cheese and chili over the fries and bingo you have chili cheese fries. Yummy
Give me ‘bad’ fries. The real problem with Guy’s is the burger - it’s a smash burger. The only reason you might need two hands is because of the amount of vegetables. Size matters.
Thankfully, fries are not the deal breaker for us. Reducing the number of Ships (Princess) we will welcome next season could be. May consider flying to destinations and holidaying for a week instead of a cruise.
TRY CANADA-NEW ENGLAND OUT OF BALTIMORE IN THE EARLY FALL. YOU'D LOVE IT. WE ARE GOING AGAIN THIS FALL. CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY "BEAVERTAIL" ON AGAIN!!!!....
On a similar note, on our last cruise on Conquest, they switched out the lemonade machines to a ' newer model' and the lemonade was watered down everywhere. Several others complained and they said they 'adjusted' the mix, but it didn't help. Well, I complained to every officer I came across and many said they we're getting complaints from other cruisers too. The hotel director then told me they are switching the machines out on all the other ships as a 'corp decision', even though they had reported about complaints from previous sailings. Time will tell...
Love Iceland!!!! Have visited there. Let me know if your tour takes you to the "LittleForest", it's a tourist attraction. Everyone goes to the "Blue Lagoon", which will surprise you as it has geothermal power plant at the sight. You don't see it in the photos, but it's so interesting. Also my granddaughter is a US/Icelander dual nationalist. Little tidbit of info, all the heating in Iceland is geothermal.
commercial kitchens use machines to peel and cut. it's not like in some old movie about WWII where soldiers were punished with potato peeling duty. Come on, Don.
You'll be there for PRIDE fest. 8/6-12. They have one of the best festivals in Europe. btw. I'll be going there on the 12th. Looking forward to your Iceland videos.
They have used those other fries for much longer than just a few months. I believe since Covid, they changed this. Good that the fresh ones are coming back
On the Disney ship, it would be chicken fingers. I have them every time and they’re absolutely amazing. It’s like they’re the purest chicken breasts ever it’s not like that mechanically separated stuff and so it’s funny chicken fingers or chicken strips on Disney or one of the best foods you can get Until they change them from chicken breast to mechanically separated, chicken like can get at some fast food places there would be an uproar and riding in the streets lol
French fries are loved word wide. McDonalds made is reputation of fries as well as Balthazar an upscale French restaurant in New York. The curse of the MBA strikes again. An ambitious corporate analyst ran a spreadsheet and found that going to frozen fries would save thousands perhaps millions a year.
I'm waiting for this to happen on NCL. They don't put out cookies in the buffet anymore, you have to ask for them and they will go get some for you. Or you can wait until midnight for them to put it out in the casino or book a suite or a Haven Suite and they will gladly give them to you.
Large cruise ships have industrial food production for any shared food item. Vegetables are washed, cut/peeled in a cerntral processing place and thend istributed to all the foot outlets that need them. Far mroe efficient and they only need 1 massive potatoe peeler for the ship instead of having a whole bunch of them at each food outlets. If french fries are served by different food outlets, then it is far mroe efficient to bring the potato peeling/cutting downstairs to the vegetables plant. So just because you don't see the potatoes being cut at your foot outlet does not mean that they don't come from fresh potatoes. But can understand that shifting work to the manufactryring plant downstairs does not inspire confidence.
Don you call that a vacation? Windy cold ,foggy no thanks that is a waste of money, you could have been some place warm and sunny, I hope you don’t get sick, your immune system isn’t all that great! But I hope the weather clears, stay well! I also have never had any food from guys burger or fries ,it is to salty ,the burger is way to big not good for people who have high blood pressure.
Latest update from Iceland weather office for Augus 2 (got google to translate from Icelandic, they haven't yet updated the english version) TLDR: The National Weather Service's response plans consider that a magma run could start at any time in the next few days and even end in an eruption. If the sequence of events is similar to that of previous eruptions, the warning may be very short. "en vedur is" is the english version. Just checked eartquaque map. Most of the recent earthquakes are just northwest of Grindavik town, well south of Svartsengi/Blue Lagoon. Those earthquakes indicate where magma is pushing through rocks to find a way out. While this is not 100% reliable, the odds seem to be on eruption happning south of Blue Lagoon (and thus down) so Blue Lagoon should be safe especially if you come from the north. However, winds could still push sulfur gases over and that would close it down. Of recent spat of eruptiosn, a coupe lasted only a coupe of days and some lasted a couple of weeks.
Haha. I didn't know this was a thing but fresh cut are so much better like Penn station. Soooo yummy!! Don show us your shirt!! I wanna see what it says!!!
Hi Don…again. I’m tired. Isn’t there more important things to B*t*h about. Go to the premier dining restaurants if the included ones aren’t making you happy. Come on people. You’re on a cruise…
