Carol is absolutely right about people who like myself have a mental block about numbers. At secondary school my brain froze when daily confronted with mental arithmetic tasks. Yet I did well with other academic disciplines and went on to Degree level studies at University. The idea of making it compulsory for students to continue with maths after 16 will only reinforce feelings of inadequacy when they could otherwise gain confidence elsewhere is wrong. At University I met many gifted mathematicians who constantly struggled with practical everyday problems. We should work to encourage people’s strengths, not emphasise their weaknesses. Everyone has a value, the art is recognising their particular value.

Same! I think it’s the type of maths that’s taught. Like Carol says, keep it a subject for those that enjoy it. Otherwise just teach it in relevant ways in other subjects. Example measurements in art when mixing. Formulas in excel in computer science etc etc. Then lessons on money management

It is the education system! Math can be taught to children in a way they can understand! Look at the work of Siegfried Englemann. I have used his book to teach my low IQ autistic son to read and do math. I was shocked how wonderful his method is.

@timmurphy5541

I found that it depends on having a personalised explanation. One needs the explanation that fits you. In desperation at university on one topic I read every book in the library until one of them had an explanation that made it clear. The impossible became possible. Obviously I have never done a partial differential equation since then :-D There is also a motivation issue because if one cannot see why one is learning it then there's no oomph to get over the problems. Being taught by people who just like it for itself is useless.

Got to love Carol's honesty and practicality. I'm hopeless at maths, and feel failed by the school system I went through, I did okay on most other subjects but found that teachers taught at the pace of the brightest two or three kids in the class, the rest where left to catch-up the best way they could. It was a boys grammar school and we had the headmaster as our maths teacher. We weren't encouraged to ask questions, quite the opposite, if you did the teacher would humiliate you. Even if you got the right answer, in your own roundabout way, it was dismissed as 'no one in their right mind would do it that way'. I lost all confidence and scrapped through exams, maths still makes my mind go into a blind panic.

Very true experienced this when 'A' levels were rock hard in the 80's. They can't even cope with teaching kids basic maths !!. My daughter was diagnosed with a delay problem in junior school which was not passed on to the Secondary School . She struggled in Maths and English until we got Tutors at home for English and Maths. The English Tutor recognised she had a problem and submitted her for testing and low and behold she had a delay problem. She was given a extra 20% time in her GCSE's (the first generation to sit exams again). and passed. Thankyou to the Tutor I paid for as the education system stinks !!.

I am not a natural at maths but I have a tick in the box for society that got me through the door onto something else. I struggled with math at school. Belittled and ridiculed over it. A concerned teacher pushed me to study an alternative form of math based on real world necessity. Not the UK i must add. Balancing a check book, calculating interest rates, trigonometry etc. I loved it and i could see real reasons to know it. A BSC later and in a well paid job, this obsession by our ruling class to force our kids to learn subjects that some are plainly not suitable for is pie in the sky. I use basic math every day and value my knowledge in it but there are other routes to success and ignoring them is failing a large percentage of young people today. We learn and digest knowledge differently and there is no one option that fits all. I fear that our kids are all being programmed to fit an ideal construct that suits the investor class.

The examples that he used were all money based (your finances, best mortgage rate, best interest rate, get paid more.) An obsession with money is NOT all of maths. Well spoken, Carol. Admirable sentiments. Head and shoulders above most politicians. While it is obviously desirable for children to become more numerate and confident in areas that will make life easier for them, like dealing with savings, loans, mortgages, etc., I think one of the most important things every child needs to understand upon leaving school is that today, the pound in their pocket is backed by nothing more than "full faith and confidence". A confidence trick, one might say. And that every billion pounds the government conjures up out of thin air to bail out their banker friends, to virtue-signal, or to fund some vote-catching scheme dilutes the spending power of everyone's hard-earned savings and pensions, so that over the course of a lifetime people's wealth is surreptitiously stolen from them through inflation. We were never taught any of this in school, but I do believe that if every school-leaver truly understood the difference between a fiat currency - backed by nothing - and real money (gold, silver, or in the broader sense commodities and hard assets) there would be greater financial discipline, increased scrutiny of politicians' spending, greater demands for accountability, and overall, less moral corruption than we have today.
