A castle above a cave. Carreg Cennen is a truly spectacular castle in Wales, nestled upon a cliff edge and overlooking the nearby hills. Located north of Swansea and near the town of Trap. A decent sized car park allows easy reach and a converted barn will allow access. The barn also features a gift shop and dining area with stunning views.
After a short climb you are rewarded with a picturesque castle, surrounded by views that are well worth the climb. But perhaps its most famous feature is the deep cave beneath it. Access is found from within the castle and down a tunnel after a steep staircase. The cave itself is pitch black so bring a torch and don’t be deterred by its depth. The spring at the end is worth the trip.

- Possibly the site of an Iron Age fort.
- Roman coins have also been found here, though it was unlikely a Roman site.
- The stone castle probably dates to Lord Rhys of the Welsh Deheubarth dynasty in the 12th century.
- It remained with the Kingdom of Deheubarth until 1283 when it was captured by the English.
- King Edward I granted the castle to John Giffard, commander of the English troops at Cilmeri.
- Giffard is probably responsible for the remodelled castle we see today.
- In 1403, Owain Glyndwr, with 800 men attacked and severely damaged the castle walls, during his war for Welsh independence. But he never managed to take the castle. The damage was repaired in 1409.
- During the War of the Roses in 1461 the castle became a Lancastrian stronghold. But a Yorkist force captured it and began to demolish it with 500 men.
- It would pass to the Vaughan and Cawdor families but never rebuilt.
- In the 18th century it attracted many artists due to its spectacular setting.
- The second Earl Cawdor began renovations in the 19th century.
- In 1932, guardianship was given to the Office of Works.
- In the 1960s the castle was acquired by the Morris family of Castell Farm when Lord Cawdor's legal team made a mistake in the wording of the deeds and included the castle as part of the farm.
- It remains privately owned by the family but is maintained by Cadw.
