Castell Carreg Cennen, Welsh for Castle on the Rock above the River Cennen in the village of Trap near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, Wales. A freshwater spring rises in the cave deep below the castle, which would have been a useful supplement during dry weather.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a consensus on the date of the first castle on this site. Certainly, there was something built here in the 12th century but it is highly likely that there were structures built of wood that predate this. There is evidence of Roman and prehistoric occupation. There is also speculation of an iron age hill fort on this site.

Great sound effects for the spring!

Would love to take the credit but all we did was point a microphone at the spring. It actually makes that noise. It does sound a bit like lighting gel being crinkled but we didn't need to go to all that effort. 😀

Oh. That makes more sense. I trained especially to make that noise by watching the Magic Roundabout as a child. 😀 I knew it would pay off eventually.

I'm creating a castle in a book series I've been writing, and I think I finally found the one I'll be basing it off of! Great exploration of the cave, thank you for making this video!

So far this is the best castle that I have been too. Mainly because of the location and that underground spring. Although I managed to hit my head in the tunnel. Another nice video, thanks

Glad you enjoyed it. The cave is really the best thing about Carreg Cennen. The castle itself is best viewed from a distance, in my opinion, because of the cragginess. It has the right look.

Great video. Its been a long time since I visited this one. We did some sword training there in the courtyard way back in 2004 I think it was, and one of the fighters was de-burring their training sword of jaggy edges. Some old folks thought he was sharpening it and were all worried. LOL. Beautiful location, just imagine it all pristine and decked out with banners and flags. And there would have been loads of farm animals in that enclosure. Great!

That is one heck of a place to have sword training! I can only imagine those what those folk were thinking would happen 😂 It would be nice if there was a window in time that you could look through to see what it was like- I think that’s part of the appeal of ruins; it requires some imagination to work out what it would have been like

Carreg is similar to the Irish word for rock "Carraig". Interesting how many words are shared despite being two different branches of celtic languages. :)
@MostlyCastles

Apparently, according to Wikipedia (and when is that ever wrong?), Castell Carreg Cennen translates from the Welsh to castle (on the) rock (above the) Cennen, so it sounds like you are spot on and the word jumped St. George's Channel one way or the other and changed its spelling slightly. You are right it's fascinating stuff. Thanks for letting us know. 😀

@@MostlyCastles so now I'm wondering about Ailsa Craig, which is a solid chunk of granite. Used to make curling stones, but I digress.. also the word crag, which seems related to this musing about rocks.

@@MostlyCastles will be checking out the others shortly, your videos are the kind of thing sadly I feel we don't get so much of on the BBC anymore so amazing to see people with such passion go out and do it themselves !
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles 2 года назад
Thank you. As people who grew up with the BBC as it was this is lovely to hear. We dumped our TV about a decade ago because there was never anything on that we wanted to watch. Speaking occasionally to people who work in TV, especially documentary departments this is very common with programme-makers. A lot are making content even they don't want to watch. We love your stuff by the way. 😀

Is it July when you are filming this? Wool Coats and hats in July? I'll be there early Sept and wondering if I need to bring warmer clothes than I thought I would need...
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles Год назад
We filmed this in November or December along with quite a few others, if memory serves, hence the warm clothing, then edited and uploaded them over the following year. I expect you will be fine in September with much lighter attire. It's quite a trek up to the castle so that will warm you up nicely. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Maybe they hide in the cave you can’t see it unless have light maybe a fall back stand and fight in a narrow passage can’t swing you sword but you can defend somehow force enemy to face you one by one Rambo way for example

I don't understand forgot torches, your phone has a torch on it
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles 2 года назад
There are several reasons why we thought that was a bad idea. You don’t want your phone near the microphones- otherwise you pick up interference. Additionally camera torches burn down the phone batteries very quickly and you absolutely would not want to get stuck down there with no light. Also, you drop a torch- it keeps on working- you drop a phone and, potentially goodbye phone, goodbye light. Even with a protector. And it is quite uneven down there, so with carrying a camera and trying to keep your balance, dropping something is likely.
