Sue and Tommy were genuinely being nice to Carrie, not everyone was laughing at Carrie only the bullies were, the whole crowd laughing at her was all in Carrie's head, Carrie's not evil she just snapped and was most likely in a trance when the massacre happened

I still don’t feel that bad for them. They all knew about her being tormented and rather than either standing up for her against the bullies or being a shoulder to cry on, they avoided her like the plague.

I agree. All that emotional stress Carrie went through in that moment made her hallucinate everyone was laughing at her and sent her into a trance letting her telekinesis take over.

Do you know what makes me even more upset? The fact that her mother is spreading false teachings.. she’s shaming her and making her feel guilty for something that is natural to her body. As Christians, we encourage young people to wait for marriage, but when they do have sex they shouldn’t be beaten or verbally @bused or even told “your going to hell.” Cause hey, it happened, acknowledge it, and be their emotional support and walk them through celibacy. Especially if it was non consensual or by someone that never calls back. Mothers and parents like her are the reason so many adults have religious trauma.

As a fan of the book I would like to elaborate on a few things: Margaret White and her husband used to be members of a cult but they later got married and left to do their own thing. Margaret and Carrie perform their own ceremonies and don't follow a specific church. They use a Bible but Margaret says her own things (in first scene at their house when Margaret is telling Carrie to repeat what she says Carrie refuses to do so because it's not from the Bible) Tommy didn't die in the fire but when the bucket hit him. He died immediately, something that I think was really good because he never saw Carrie as a murderer but as a friend and died quickly without suffering. While we are all sad that Carrie ended up being viewed as a monster you have to remember that people never learned about the abuse by her mother or what exactly happened that night. The few survivors were traumatized or didn't know what was going on.

Exactly. The real monster in the movie is her mother, who was obsessed with keeping Carrie from becoming "sinful." If I remember correctly, I think Carrie was conceived from rape as well and Margaret saw Carrie as a kind of punishment.

There is also a Stephen King-land fan theory that says that Margaret was a Profit of God (like Mother Abigail in The Stand), but that she couldn't handle it and went pretty nuts. I don't know how much evidence there really is for that theory, but I do like it.

The best Stephen King horror stories usually have some supernatural things, but the real horror is always the people. You might not have been scared by most of this movie, but you were absolutely horrified by the life poor Carrie had to live. That’s the horror in Carrie.

I’ll never understand why people nowadays think that Sue and Tommy were in on the plan to humiliate Carrie. It was always clear to me that they were attempting to help her. Maybe that’s because I read the book.

Idk I thought it was intentional by Palma to not reveal their intentions until the end when Sue actually sees the rope, because up until that point, almost everyone who hasn't read the book would've believed they were in on it. And them being nice was kinda the twist for me or that's how I felt it was structured by De Palma.

the genius of the director is that he allows for there to be some nuance, so that some people believe tommy and sue are innocent, and some thing they are in it. From the gym teacher's perspective, a perspective the audience share, they are in on it (Tommy's reasons for inviting Carrie are dubious bearing in mind he was forced by Sue), that's a genius move by de Palmer

RIP: Piper Laurie ... the actress who played Carrie's mother died last week at the age of 91. She had a long and great career. CARRIE: I think it's a horror film, but it's more... It has elements of Shakespearian tragedy (particularly the cross purposes of the gym teacher and Sue -- if only they had communicated more directly the tragedy could have been prevented. But both of them meant well!). BULLYING: I was also a (severely) bullied high schooler, and I was experiencing that at the time the movie came out, so I went to see it at least four times. It was very cathartic for me. I was more at risk for harming myself than my bullies, but the movie helped me by letting me vicariously feel Carrie's revenge. So the movie was both satisfying and a good cautionary tale for me.

When I saw this movie as a kid, I never thought Tommy was in on it, but viewers nowadays all seem to suspect him. I think movies back then were more straightforward, but since then, 40 years of plot twists and characters with Act 3 reveals have conditioned viewers to be more suspicious of what they're being shown. The moment that should have revealed that Tommy wasn't in on it was when Carrie commented in class that his poem was beautiful, and the teacher made fun of her, and Tommy whispered under his breath "you suck." He actually felt bad for the way Carrie was being treated.

Sue genuinely felt bad and was trying to make amends. That's why she got her boyfriend to ask her to prom. Sue knew he wouldn't try to take advantage of her and could give her a truly pleasant prom experience. Tommy was not faking anything, which is why Carrie did open up to him, but then his immediate death after the blood is poured, was like killing John Wick's first dog.

I love the fact that Amy Irving's real-life mother, Priscilla Pointer, played her mother in "Carrie". Brian de Palma had a history of using mothers and daughters in films together.

I am so surprised that many reactors don’t get that Tommy and Sue tried to help her. It is so clear that they are the only ones including the teacher (she still doubt about sue at the end and this is what cause the snap accident) who have compassion towards Carrie. Tommy is really happy at the end to be with Carrie even if it started like a “forced” good action. At the end not everyone laugh at her but she thinks they are … Only the stupid girl laugh at her, everybody is horrified by this bad joke ! She’s so traumatized that she’s unable to see the reality… So so sad story !

The first Stephen King novel, the first to be adapted, and still one of his best, most chilling works yet. That prom scene is rightfully one of the most infamous and imitated scenes of all time, and it still gives me chills.

As someone who went through a lot of abuse by my peers (not my home life, thankfully) and had a lot of anger issues, I can't help but relate to Carrie. Blinding rage can lead to disaster, not only for those it's aimed at and those caught in the wake, but also for the one it inhabits. Sissy Spacek was phenomenal in this.

That was by far the most *EPIC* reaction to the jump scare at the end! Also glad you two figured out that Tommy and Sue were NOT in on it. I never got that impression, but I first watched this film as a kid in the late 70s when it would come on tv.

I have seen a few reactions to "Carrie" and a lot of people think that Sue and Tommy are in on it. I love this movie and have watched it since I was a kid and never thought that either. I wonder why so many people think that who watch it now. Anyway, I've always liked how after the shower scene how Sue and Chris react so differently. Sue is actually a good person who got caught up in going along with the crowd and did a nasty thing. After been confronted with how horrible it really was, she tries to make amends and wants to give Carrie a good teenage experience. Chris is a terrible person and went to an extreme to take out her anger on Carrie even further with no remorse whatsoever.

This movie breaks my heart every time I watch it and I always tear up when we get those final moments before disaster strikes. Prom was probably the highlight of Carrie's entire life and I'm sure she felt on top of the world when she got Prom Queen with Tommy. All of that just to be the punch line of another joke? It's tragic. I never had to endure the amount of bullying Carrie did, but I knew what it felt like the be alone. I knew how hard it was to trust people who had genuine good intentions. I knew that feeling of hesitation whenever something felt too good to be true. It's been better ever since I started college, but the school years before that were rough. It's a time where you're still figuring out who you are and where you belong. Having an entire town mock you simply for living at a time like that is something I couldn't even imagine having to go through. The INNOCENT lives that were lost aren't justified AT ALL, but Carrie can't be the one to blame. She's a girl who was abused and mistreated her entire life and she JUST discovered her telekinetic powers which kicked in around the roughest time in a teenager's life. Being caught off guard like that on stage caused those powers to completely take over and it's almost like she was sent into a trance as a fight or flight response. I never ever saw Carrie as an evil person or a villain. I think she's a product of what evil people create and I think what happened that night was a result of the consequences for their actions affecting everyone. Those selfish people wanted to see how many holes they could puncture in the raft and they ended up dragging every single person with them when they inevitably sank.

Apparently when Piper Laurie auditioned for this, she read the script and thought it was a satire. She went so over the top with her audition and they thought it was just right. RIP Piper Laurie.

Sissy Spacek went to Nashville to audition for a record deal. She was told not thank you because the record company said they already had a singer that sounded exactly like her. That singer was Loretta Lynn. Years later Sissy gave as Oscar winning performance as Loretta in Coal Miner's Daughter.

I have such fond memories of this movie. My aunt took me and my sisters to see this movie when it came out. Everyone started to leave after Carrie died but then they heard Sue's mother talking on the phone so they stopped, some of them stopped in the isle. Let me tell you, when that hand cam out and grabbed Sue, EVERYBODY jumped and screamed and then laughed. It was awesome!

Why didn't you understand that Sue and Tommy really wanted to be nice to Carrie? In the beginning when the teacher scolds the girls it is shown how Sue starts to understand how cruel she has been and then tries to make amends for her nasty behaviour. She is even willing to give up her own prom attendance for Carrie.

it is remarkable the change I see in young people today. This reaction illustrates it so specifically. I saw this movie for the first time not long after it was released. I can genuinely say that none of us remotely thought that Sue and Tommy were in on the plot to hurt carrie further. Truly-that idea was never in play for us. We all knew that sue was genuine, and that Tommy went along because he's a good guy, but then was taken with her, and had actual feelings for her during the prom. And I say this having experienced what a huge movie this was in culture when it was released. Everybody went to see it. CARRIE had the cache of being both critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated, while also having the horror and Stephen King crowd equally wanting in on the fun. It was one of those crossover films that somehow everybody knew and went to see. For my pals in both high school and college, it was a major favorite film, a cult classic, often discussed and referenced. So I can say with certainty that it never entered our minds that sue and tommy would be in on it. All the young reactors watching this film today come to that conclusion immediately. And they are sure of it! Certain that this is happening! And like this reaction, they spend a considerable amount of their reaction energy towards proving this idea. For many, it becomes the central idea that they are taken with during the entire prom scene. More energy is spent on this idea (which isn't actually happening) than the actual action that is happening in front of them. This is really striking to me. It mirrors so much of what is going on today in culture politically. And it saddens me that this kind of conspiracy thinking and everybody against everybody is the first go-to idea for young people today. And I don't mean this as criticism, genuinely. I get it. It is not their fault. It is the culture they have been raised in and around. But wow-it makes me sad. And it worries me about the future for them. What has been done to this generation of young people?

There does appear to have been some kind of cultural shift. I've seen hints of this in many reaction videos, not only for CARRIE, but for many films that are more than half a century old. Young people today seem to "read" films in ways that viewers and reviewers of my generation (that I knew of) did not. Why this might be, and how prevalent, is not something I can speak of with any certainty, and I might be completely wrong about the scope of this change, but at least on social media, I keep noticing more and more examples of it....

Brian de palma was holding auditions for this film in the same office as George Lucas was for Star Wars. The actor for Tommy originally went in for the role of Luke Skywalker, failed that but got this role instead.

Dude my elementary school did it up until the 90's, though I think it was used more as a threat by the principle who had it hanging up on the wall within his reach from his chair but I heard kids who did get it 3 smacks on the behind. It is currently not banned by any law in the state of Florida (or many other southern states). Look up School corporal punishment on wikipedia currently 13 states have not banned it.

Good reactions but as other people said, I'm not sure how a lot of reactors think Tommy and Sue are in on the prank. Seeing this as a kid in the 70's about everyone knew they weren't in on it. People must see things differently now.

Such an innocent reaction. In the early parts, I can't count how many times I shouted at the screen, "Ohmygod, you really don't know!" The statue in the closet was Saint Sebastian, an early Christian martyr who was tied to a post and shot with arrows. So this was the image Carrie reflexively had in her head when she...snapped...with her mother.

How I LOVE telling this story. Around 1975, my brother goes into a drug store to have a prescription filled out. He has time to kill. So he goes to the paperback rack and picks up this $.75 paperback book to read to kill time. The next thing he gives it to my mom. Then my mom gives me the book. Then I take the book to school and it goes around the school. And this same scenario was repeated all over the place. But THAT is how the career of Stephen King got started. So I was so surprised to learn they were making a movie of this cheap paperback book. So you bet I was keeping my eyes open for the movie to open. Well, me, my mom, and a friend of the family got to see the movie at a special Halloween preview (the movie was scheduled for a November release), so NOBODY in that audience knew what was going to happen at the end of the film. When the jolt occurred, the shock was so great that I don't recall anybody even screaming. I know I jumped 2 feet out of my seat, but I think what happened was 900 plus people in the theater all swallowed their tongues at the same time. But when the jolt was revealed to be a dream, well, the reverberation lasted a good 15 to 20 minutes AFTER the movie ended. We made it into the lobby and I saw women crying, but the majority of people were quickly lighting cigarettes with the most wobbly hands imaginable. It's a movie moment I will never forget. There have been I think three remakes, but only the 1976 version was able to successfully create the world of this story. In this story, the prank that is played on Carrie is so mean, so cruel, so awful that I don't think any teenager could have thought it up. When Carrie unleashes her rage, well, that's just it, they pushed her to the point where she FINALLY snapped. I encourage you to read the book, cause Carrie's revenge in the book makes the movie seem miniscule. Either ways, loved your reaction, but especially loved your reaction at the end. It's nice to see that this moment still works.

Lol. As someone who grew up in 80s, I assure you, teachers could hit kids in the 70s. It did depend which kid. My first grade teacher in 88 pulled a 6-year-old up and slapped him twice, once on the face, once on the backside in front of all of us. Times changed DRASTICALLY.

I went to the theater to see this and the theater was one screen. We were lined up outside to go in and the crowds screamed (much like the two of you… lol) and the doors busted open giving us in the lobby a good scare. You must read the book. There’s more to the book. Carrie destroys the entire town and dies of a hemorrhage. King based this on a girl from his school who was harassed to the point of taking her own life. King put a set of autopsy papers and other documents at the back of the original book making appear to. E a true story. Great review.

I’m an immigrant. I watched this movie before I came to the US and I thought my HS experience was going to be like this. But it wasn’t as bad when I got here. I was bullied, but very much. I just had poor choice of “friends” that backstabbed me and talked behind my back.

This was the first movie adapted from Stephen King's first novel and he went to a theater to see the movie. At the end when Carrie's arm came out of the ground and grabbed Sue's arm. Both men screamed and one said "Oh man! That girl ain't never gonna be right!" Stephen King knew the movie was going to be a hit!

Corporal punishments in schools ended in the UK in the ‘80’s, 1986 I think, I went to secondary school the year after. Our headmaster had a whole host of canes, a slipper and a paddle in his office, but I never really heard of it being often. Our headmaster was a very large man and getting called to his office was scary enough, once you got in there and saw all the implements of punishment your knees damn near gave out. I got called to his office once and got so distraught my nose started bleeding!! I had won a prize for handwriting 😂😂😂😂

In the book : when she walks off the stage , she loses both shoes humiliated . Then she leaves the gym and tumbles onto the lawn of the school - carrie imagines going back home and admitting to her mother that she was wrong . Carrie then doesn't want to accept shame & defeat and walks back to the gym. Through the window she slams all the doors shut, turns on the sprinklers and electrocutes everyone . All this is done with carrie smiling from outside. The death of her mother is done by carrie slowing down her heart to a complete stop.

You should read the book. Carrie was never ''the evil one'' .. she was the victim. She was the victim of the relentless bullies at school .. she was the victim at home with a mother who was quite frankly 'loop the fcuking loop' .. and ultimately she was the victim of a power that took over when she was pushed too far. Sue and Tommy .. and the Gym teacher .. were all trying to be nice to her.

In high school I also hated other kids getting bullied. A small guy bumped into one of the school bullies in the cafeteria line and the bully wanted to kick his ass. I kinda grabbed the younger kid and pulled him back and said to the bully, if you want to fight I’m here but really, over being bumped into? Then the bully punched me in the side of my head so I grabbed him and threw him over a huge stack of trays. We both got suspended but I was ok with it. He got a 3 day suspension and I got a 1 day in school suspension which didn’t actually go on my record.

I absolutely sympathize with Carrie because I was bullied and harassed CONSTANTLY throughout my time in elementary, middle, and high school, to the point I wanted to either hurt myself or hurt and kill the bullies (neither of which I did). And like Carrie, the teachers and staff at my schools did NOTHING to stop it. So when I see Carrie not just kill but absolutely slaughter all of the people that tortured her to her breaking point, I feel no sense of empathy for them, in fact I root for it. Those people were sociopaths who made it their sole purpose to torture Carrie. This movie isn’t a horror film, it’s a revenge fantasy. My problem with the movie is that she dies in the end. I would’ve had her not only live but actually watch over her school for a distance and protect the victims of bullying forever. Like use her telekinesis from a distance to make it seem like she’s alive and haunting the school within fact she’s watching it from a distance, like a vengeful, protective wraith.

Sissy Spacek who was new to Hollywood but managed to get a Best Actress nomination lost to Faye Dunaway of the film Network. Carrie is such an ironic role that resonates with so many people and has been remade was probably more deserving but Dunaway had been overlooked for roles in Bonnie and Clyde and Chinatown that when she was given this role I think the voters thought it was only right to give her the Oscar for a strong performance. The boy who says "Creepy Carrie" is Cameron Depalma the director's nephew. Piper Laurie would follow this with the horror film RUBY. DePalma would ask Amy Irving(Sue) for his next horror film The Fury. Nancy Allen(Chris) married/divorced the director and appeared in Blow Out with John Travolta and Dressed to Kill. There is a line in a book that ends up being chilling: When Chris says: This isn't over! This isn't over by a long shot! Stephen King writes: And she was right. Betty Buckley the teacher was a Broadway performer and had a role in the horror film The Happening. John Travolta's first role in film was actually The Devil's Rain. PJ Soles(Red Cap) was in the OG Halloween and Stripes with Bill Murray. The reason the girls and others did not like Carrie was she dressed strange, acted weird, not athletic, was poor, and her mom was a religious fanatic. The music is an ode to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. This was cast as the same time as Star Wars so Princess Leia or Hans Solo could have been in this film! Tommy was killed instantly by the bucket. The statue in the closet is St. Sebastian. Did you notice the mural on the wall when Carrie and her mom were having their dinner? The Last Supper. Sissy knew Depalma since worked as a set designer for his film Phantom of the Paradise called him to see if he was still casting. He said he thought he found his lead but she could come by. She did have previous acting experience in Badlands with Martin Sheen and Prime Cuts. She dressed like Carrie and read the role and won the director over.

P.S. This one's a keeper. I was about 12 when this came out and my Pop and I never missed a horror flick, particularly Stephen King. Well, as this was the first in a LONG line of "end-on-a-scare" films, let me tell you what it was like sitting next to (and in front of, poor fellow) my Pop the jiu-jitsu master when that last shot came. Me and the dude got pasted. I still crack up at the memory. Great, great video, kids. RIP Pop.

Yes, to answer your question, teachers were allowed to slap back then, including getting the belt. The 70's and 80's were my school years and that wasn't unheard of. The worst I ever got was my face grabbed, a friend of mine got the wooden paddle and I saw a few face slaps. Everything was very different back then, smoking was allowed on planes and in hospitals and of course restaurants, tattoos were heavily frowned upon, earrings on males, etc.. the list goes on and on. It was a different time and we have definitely changed for the better. Good reaction you two.

@@Coneyislandqueennn I live in California, America, so the following will only come from my own experience. Rulers were also used, as in the measuring ones. Some states still haven't completely banned the use of those, they were used on knuckles, backsides, you name it. California is a very progressive state too, probably the most progressive out of all fifty, so what I mentioned in my previous post was still occurring in California when I graduated in '88. No idea when the spankings or slaps stopped, but I'm sure it wasn't too long after, probably the 90's. I also lived in Texas for a brief time in '89-'90 and the N word was still being used, and regularly in front of people that were not white. As a white person myself, I was nothing short of shocked, because that wasn't really the norm in California, so I told the people that felt that was okay, 'you use that word in California, you're going to get your ass kicked', they just laughed it off. Racism unfortunately will never go away either, but it has gotten a lot better since back then, even if it's more hidden now in comparison. I grew up in the military, father was in the Air Force, so we learned at a very young age to respect all people, my dad was a tough cookie as well though. He still believed in spankings, although I think I only got it once, older brother got it often, learned what not to do from him. lol Another one of my dad's ideas of disciplinary action was having us stand at a wall with only our nose touching the wall, arms at side, and if we moved, we got another half hour, if we talked, and I kid you not, we got Tabasco sauce put in our mouths, and could not swallow. That's just torture looking back on it. lol Our grandparents still used soap if foul language was spoken. There's really not a lot I miss about that era, other than I did have fun as child, it wasn't all bad, but you knew not to overstep the boundaries that were established. You learn very early on, at least I did, to stay disciplined and to always treat others fairly, so what I was taught wasn't all bad, just kind of a messed up way of getting to that point. lol This post was a little long-winded, but giving you and others that might be reading this an idea of far and how much we have changed. The world is in a much better place than it was just forty years, which is great, nothing will be ever perfect, all we can do is learn from our past mistakes and move forward.
