Growing up is seeing that Carrie had no self respect, is codependent and has elements of narcissism. I could list her crimes, but I do not have all day. One of the lowest was when Charlotte was so excited to announce her engagement, her dream was seemingly coming true! Carrie said "paper covers rock" and put her post it over the ring. Carrie's short term thing ending weirdly was the only thing she wanted anyone to focus on, not Char's happiness in that moment. That is no friend.

She’s awful to Charlotte!! When Charlotte says “I think you’re playing with fire” in SATC 2 when she’s going to meet aiden & Carrie replies just because you’re worried about your marriage doesn’t mean everybody else is going to cheat!! The audacity!!! Especially when she DOES kiss Aidan!!! If I was Charlotte I would of gone straight to the airport because F that bitch 😅

I never liked Carrie, but I liked Mr. Big even less. I was 17 when started watching the show and I thought she was so desperate, but I understood her much better than I do now. I am now 40, and I just can't imagine a 30-something being like this about a man, it really seems more something my then teenage friends would do.

This seems spot on. It’s a way of asserting that his validation is the one that matters, and she can’t really know she looks beautiful until she hears it from him. Someone who really cares for Carrie as a person would say “It’s nice to see you having fun.” And then F off because he wants Carrie to find love.

That is why (I think) J married her. She was the more simple easy for him woman so when he is done with the complicated and the interesting and on a higher level ones, he can settle with the woman !who is always here! Wow...

I wouldn’t say that guy who found Carry searching his apartment and then kicked her out is not coming from a healthy place. It’s not like they already got to know each other enough for him to want to work on her insecurities. Maybe he wants a partner who is not searching one’s apartment for evidence to confront them abt something they didn’t tell in first 2 dates they have been on. There is health in a choice to be with a person you don’t need to heal from everything that happened to them,it’s not your job.

I agree with you. The guy did nothing wrong. He doesn’t own Carrie anything. If she is so insecure about him, why did she slept with him so soon? She should have waited more, and going out more with him, than ask questions about his hobbies, etc. She is nuts.

I am at the end (one year removed) of a Carrie/Big dynamic… so much so that we called each other “Mr. Big” and “kid” as a joke. This is, of course, before realizing how toxic the dynamic is. My advice for anyone going through this is… choose you. Become obsessed with your own self-worth and provide your own daily validation that you’re a bad-ass. Accept that you have attracted avoidant types of men who use you to feed their own ego. My Mr. Big recently told me that he misses me It sent me over the edge until I realized that this pattern will continue until I move past the need for validation from others. I don’t have all of the answers, but as someone who has been very much like Carrie, I’m on my way out of the toxicity. Thanks for excellent and really life-changing commentary here from everyone. ❤

Hook up with or just flirt with me, sext and sexually video chat with me, be on and off with me for many years but rarely commit to me (though in some cases they said they did when I was totally over them finally), but now that I’m 36 I’ve learned my lessons to not let guys take advantage of me and lead me on anymore.

I forgot the creators name but I'll put it here when I find it. But she brought up a good point about big. She basically said big is the bottom of the barrel in his social strata. That's why he has no friends. And his only friend is that guy who's an asshole. He cheated on his wife with her best friend. And you know women rule the social scene so he was kicked out. People from this kind of money go to the same schools and clubs since like birth I think it's pretty strange that big doesn't have more acquaintances from the past. It's because he got kicked out because he's a Jacka** and look they weren't wrong because he got another wife from the same class background he cheated on her too. He sucks that's it's

She wants a daddy period. Her real father abandoned her when she was a child. So it all makes sense she wanted the acceptance and love from Mr.Big ( all powerful and all) and since he was toying with her emotions well it became her mission to get him. As she gets stronger and loves herself more he comes back testing her boundaries because he LOVES that Carrie feeds his ego.

having been in carrie's position, being a typical anxious attachment style who loves avoidant people, seeing how common this type of situation is in general, i just don't understand why people are hating on her like she commited some terrible crime. i just feel bad for her. she accepted the love she thought she deserved and she was struggling to make this man love her, which should never be the case. i feel so bad for her every time big pushes her away or acts cold after being all lovey-dovey. this hot and cold type of stuff is the most basic strategy avoidant people use, some without even realising, and it works like a clock on people with anxious attachment. i think the saddest thing is that both types of behaviour (her and big's) are rooted in fear of pain and rejection. they did love each other, but they had absolutely different needs.

Big is a player. He does not admit to himself that something in Carrie fascinates him and keeps on playing with her. And because she is co-dependent in her relationships with men, she is the perfect victim for his behavior. They toxically complete each other. Big is NOT a good, balanced man. He is egotistical and self-centered. And Carrie is juvenile but not malignant. The moment she decides going with the guy with the magazine would be giving him the power, is her realizing that in that moment she is dependent of him validating she is single and fabulous. She does not see that she always needs validation in her relationships with men. Thanks for your video! Can’t wait the next one!

To me, Big is a textbook case of struggling with avoidant attachment. I don’t think he doesn’t love Carrie. But intimacy is a trigger for avoidants. It even explains all the ways he keeps minimizing her role in his life from calling her “kid” to reminding her that the secretary sent the birthday flowers. These are deactivating strategies meant to distance yourself from your partner

I didn’t even finish watching the video but I already have a good sum of what’s going on here. If you’re someone that values commitment and want to get married someday, play things safe, don’t be sleeping around, making out here and there, seeing guys left and right or even the same guy doing all this stuff without solidifying anything. Know what you want before entertaining shit like this, it’s annoying and juvenile. I’ve never been in a relationship because I do wanna get married but I had to work through my childhood trauma first and take time to solidly what my values are and what I will and won’t stand for. I’m grateful to be taking this time because if I can help it, I’m trying to avoid this mess right here. Although it’s a T.V show, still a lot of people fall into this mess-no thank you.

All I could think is when she was all busted by big after they ran into him was "Carrie wtf!? Big is selfish jerk after being with you for a year still doesn't know?! You're with a Yankee! What do you care if big put his hand on your shoulder? The Yankee put his lips on your lips! And he actually seems more into you than Big ever did!" There is so much so say, firstly I'm kinda a new subbie (like 2 weeks ago) and I already went on a HUGE rampage through your videos, starting with the first one on Carrie and Mr. Big. About your question about that guy Carrie went on a date on and he also called her a freak: Yes, doing that wasn't the kindest of things and in general I agree with you when you say that sometimes we need another person to get us out of our fears or show us that there ARE people out there worth trusting. BUT. As far as I understood it was their first date and in my experience when someone behaves kinda coocoo in the beginning, it can go sour VERY fast. If I feel a connection with someone (let's say after meeting them for 4/5 times) I'd behave as you said. I even HAVE someone who did that to me and it helped me TREMENDOUSLY in my fears and self worth, but if I think someone going bananas the first time I meet them in my home would scare me away, which is a save space for me It's way too much a risk with a person you know nothing about. But yes, he could have let her go more nicely and calm her down more. About Carrie and Big: I was in my young teens when the show aired in Germany (I'm born in 89) and always liked Charlotte the most when it comes to her goals, but am more of a mix if Carrie and Miranda personality wise. I remember very clearly how a friend of mine ADORED Carrie's relationship with him and when I was younger, everything about him turned me off (I was 15, so not being into a guy that age is a healthy thing I guess 😂) Funnily enough my last boyfriend of 3 years was very much his type when it comes to his behaviour and I'm over it, but your videos show me how much I needed him in his life to grow and SEE what my flaws are, how childish and dramatic I can potentially be, so that I can work on it. Big simply is a huge arsehole, nothing more, nothing less and he does lead her on. I very much liked how you said that he was always in the middle, he's the Schrödinger's cat of communication and relationships and being on the other side of that will drive you up the wall if you don't have firm bounderies. Which is so fitting as he was called the next Trump upon introducing him, although less orange, his behaviour IS that of a politician. Lastly I wanna say: I LOVE your videos, you put so much work into it, it's like listening to a big sis giving you life advice. Honestly, the stuff you put out is the right mix of subjective and objective while you sinply being a charismatic person. I'd honestly even listen you talking about an analysis of Big clipping his ugly toenails 😂

I love that it shows that you're constantly working at things and you're imperfect and can be a mess, BUT at 28 it is teaching me that I want to try not to be a Carrie. I feel like 6 months out from a breakup is a dangerous time as the hurt of the breakup can fade, and you feel nostalgic about all the good parts. I think Carrie is hyper aware of the problems that led to the breakup, and she’s carefully avoiding them. So her dates with John seem to be fun and positive. But it’s an illusion. Really, she’s doing all the work of shutting down her expectations and only engaging with John on his terms. If John were a better person, he would say “My feelings haven’t changed - do you still want to do this, knowing I couldn’t make you happy before?” But he DGAF and hops on the free sex and ego trip 😂

35:24 it’s not freaky to have fears and paranoia, it IS freaky to go through someone’s stuff when they aren’t home. If I started dating a guy and left him alone in my apartment and came home to find him ransacking my apartment looking for something wrong with me, I’d think he was crazy. You really want to let Carrie off the hook for her insane behavior and I get it, she is the protagonist of the story. But my guess is if you’d take a minute to flip her crazy behavior and imagine that it was a man doing the things that Carrie does, you’d probably rightly see it as a red flag and grounds to not pursue a relationship with someone like that.

When Carrie is saying it’ll be to validate herself to go home with the guy, she means that because of her cover photo being humiliating, sleeping/ being with the guy would be proving her worth to “cancel out” the horrible cover. He thought the cover was funny (and was a jerk to shove it in her face), so being with him now after seeing it would make him realize the cover isn’t really her.

I would like SJP and the writers of the show to give an interview about how they feel and the Carrie character now looking in retrospect. I really would like them to say "yeah idk wtf we were thinking about". Because damn it was awful

Some of it was cringey but I read a lot of it was based on the writers’ real lives!

I feel like this kinda misses the whole point- and I could be wrong because I did not watch the show- but like, whenever I watch thesw retrospect analysis of this show, it seems obvious to me that thw focus was the ways in which Carrie self sabotages in ways a lot of women in this independent landscape after having been raised by women that pattially only were supposed to be a support figure fornthe men and not fully independent individuals. Likex her friends do critisize her, they say to her all the things that are inbsome way alsona voice ofnreason, they also demonstrate good support amongst women circles, so to expect the writers to admit their writing was awful when really the point was to dissect and understand why a woman would be attracted and hung up on someone like Big, is not a bad thing considering he was supposed to be the new trump.. you know, the guy that is still appealing enough to the masses, to be running for preso again. It is not entirely irrelevant. Protagonists are not meant to be flawless, and I think they do seem to end it on the note the true love that mattered were the friendd that went through thick and thin with her. Is that awful?

I don't think a character has to be smart or good or have a good life. Their story just has to be justified and make sense. Which Carrie's story did.

It is so sick how they portrayed her. It is like a desperate, chasing woman that s o self respect, no self confidence and serious traumas. She can’t say no, is out of control and none of her friends or family stop her or help her

Carrie is a narcissist. I loved her as a 20 years old but found her character very icky as a 30 years old. The rest of them aged well but i give it a look again when i turn 40.

I can put light Into the mistery why things are as they are: listen closely---> 1. We don’t live in small towns or villages, its harder to keep in touch and bump into each other. So there is zero chance to see him again 2. There are too many options for man to date women 3. So women have more problems to play it cool and have him koncentrate only on her, to chase them 4. That results in low self esteem, thinking they are not good enough, and forces them to chase the guys they like. It results in problems in the relatinship. Power inbalance. It gives the men too much power. And the women is in a disadvantage. Which naturally gives men the power to play and do what they like. Thats a huge problem nowadays and thats why its so hard for women to date nowadays.
