I'm not an enormously religious person and I'm not really a Carrie Underwood fan but this just punched me right in the feels. This one hymn always brings that religion back to me and reminds me of the Power that Be and she did an incredibly amazing job. Wonderful reaction.
Vince Gill has a huge category of hits .. you should do Go Rest on the Mountain .. he wrote it for former country artist Keith Whitley and sang it at George Jones funeral .. also How Great Thou Art is a church hymnal !! Carrie did later on end up making a Christian album !

Vince Gill is a legend. As others have said, watch "Rest High on the Mountain". And he has others that are greats! Funny thing is his beginning. In an interview, he said when he first started out, he was told by dozens of producers he didn't have a voice for country...said it was too high. Turned out they were wrong. And holy cow...Carrie's voice is rock-solid, steady, powerful, and piercing. Few can hold such a power note like she can. And you can understand every word she sings in every song so incredibly clearly...crystal clear every time.

We used to sing this hymn in church all the time when I was growing up. Elvis released one of the more famous versions back in the 60’s but it was around long before then.

This was my Mamaw's favorite hymn, and she teared up every time we sang it as a congregation on Sunday. When she passed, we struggled through our emotions to sing it while we celebrated her life. I'm sure she heard us, and although she was gone before Mrs. Underwood graced us with this version, but I'm sure it reached my Mamaw up above too.
Her rendition always gives me goosebumps, and for me, is the grace that differentiates the infinite beauty of the spiritual unknown from the grubby and twisted human politics of religion.

Vince Gill is a huge star in his own right & has the voice of an angel. Check out his song 'Go rest high on that mountain', which is almost hymnlike too. It is his most famous song & is just beautiful. It has been played at many funerals I have attended. He wrote it when he lost his brother & it is beautiful & inspiring. Then of course he has beautiful love songs & fun songs. 'Whenever you come around' is the first song I ever heard by him, many years ago & it remains my favorite. Another beautiful love/heartbreak song is 'When I call your name'. Then 'One more last chance' is a very funny video & song Vince did when he was younger. Perfect for a married couple to enjoy & relate to. Also... Did you two notice this was at an awards show & The Judds & Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton were in the front row? Also 'How great thou art' is a very famous hymn that has been around since 1885. I am shocked you never heard this one or sang it in church yourself. It never sounded like Carrie, but I have sung it since I was little & I am 70. Her version is diva-like, not like a normal Sunday service version. This was originally sang by George Beverly Shea. He lead the music in the Billy Graham Crusade. I can remember seeing them on tv in black and white. This is a very well established gospel song.
I understand the thought about George Beverly Shea. However, this song existed and was immensely popular, decades before George Beverly Shea began singing it with the Billy Graham crusades.
Carrie said she had never really belted like that in front of her peers and was worried that they would not react well. She need not have worried - got a standing ovation long before the song was over.
