Cartrivision Camer-A-Thon, Part 9 - Crystal Oscillator Modification

I demonstrate the conversion of the camera from AC line locked PLL operation to internal crystal oscillator operation. It was certain that the circuits would work. But, it is always best to build it and test it before bragging about it. In this case, the system worked as expected.

RICHARD! Synchronicity manafests. I worked with you many years ago in the JRTC Video Shop on Ft. Polk. Great to see you on here and stoked that you've found this medium. Will watch back your entire catalog. You've always been the expert and a motivator to stay connected to this wonderful world of electronic video. Look forward to catching up with you sometime!

HOLY SHI.... COW! Hi there Tom. You can find my contact info at my web site, given in the video description. OR you may still have it. My email address has been the same since 1998 at the least.

Great job as always Lab Guy... That's a rock solid picture you have there... For stability of frequency you cant beat a Chrystal Oscillator.. i know most radio manufactures went to PLL long time ago to reduce cost but if frequency accuracy is crucial you just cant do any better imo... 73's DE KK4MMM..

This is all well over my pay grade but extremely fascinating!!

If you watch the deep dive video, you will see that these old cameras were "relatively" simple. In this video, I replace one oscillator with another. The goal is to make the camera ultimately run on 12 volts DC, without the need for the 60 cycle power line pulse. This camera's weakness is that it needs 18 volts DC and a pulse from the power line. It's a form of ultra cheap engineering. Since there are still so many of these cameras in existence, it is my goal to develop a couple of simple mods to make them usable again.

@@videolabguy I kinda got the gist of it. My dad was an electrician and I’ve done a little circuit bending of old electronic toys and messed around with arduinos/raspberry pi’s, but nothing quite at you level. I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos after coming across your channel just yesterday!

As long as Felix and Spuds are in the frame, "Jaggies" are okay with me.

In the next video, I will try to remember to do video capture to show the jaggies effect more clearly. For some reason, this video was all about, "Pump this thing out!". It was not well thought through. It bothers me when I go to long without producing some content. I did some experiments last evening with interesting results. Learned a great deal about the operating voltage. 18 volts vs 12 volts. You all may be stunned by my discovery. I was. The 31.5KHz crystals are literally made of unobtainium. I have been pestering Seiko Epson for samples of their watch size 31.5KHz crystals. But, only getting silence. So, we will resort to another method to get good timing in this camera and inform you of that when the parts arrive. I am importing them from the Orient as well. So, they may sit in the container ships for a while before they arrive. So, stay tuned, there is lots of discoveries to be shared with my viewers. Thank you for your patience. Spud and Felix say, "Howdy!".
