Love your video, great tips for my first attempts going into carving by hand. As up to now i mainly use a trim router sometimes using a gouge for texture. But looking forward to using the hand chisels. Keep up the great work.

Thank you . It was nice to see the way's in which you cut, seeing how it's done is far better than diagrams. the sound of the cuts are like music to my ears.

Great video, I really enjoy your teaching style. I have been carving for a while now but mostly do caricatures. I bought some used Swiss Made tools for relief carving and noticed that on my the #7, 14mm fishtail gouge that the corners are rounded. Is there a way to fix that? I assume I can file down the end flat and then re-sharpen, but your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I only have enough money to buy a couple pfeil gouges at a time. If I'm limited over the next year to, say, 4 or 5, could you give me a suggestion on which to buy? My interest is shallow relief carvings on boxes, and simple reliefs on small furniture. Things like half moons, sunbursts, and similar basic patterns. I'd really appreciate any chisel suggestions. Have bought really cheap ones before and they just depress me and take so long to get sharp for so little staying sharp.

I'm just starting with wood carving. I'm looking for carving kits. The full set of knives are 300 +. Do you recommend a standard set that's not that expensive?

Wonderful lesson. Do you have any tips on using a v chisel diagonal to the grain, if neither side of the cut is waste? (I notice you are always paying attention to insure any tear out is on your waste side.)

Wow! your tools are so sharp. Do you have a posting on how to sharpen them and how to keep them at their best? Found them but it would not let me open. Oh well. Love watching what you do.

Hi luemoonba, I hope you don't mind me responding. Mary is teaching abroad this month and doesn't have a reliable internet connection. You can access new, high-definition versions of Mary's sharpening lessons for free on Mary's school site at www.marymaycarving.com/carvingschool/getting-started-preview/ Registration is free and you will immediately have access to 8 beginner lessons, 2 of which address sharpening. Hope this helps!

@calebmay9238

Hi Mark, I hope you don't mind me responding. Mary is teaching abroad this month and doesn't have a reliable internet connection. Mary uses double-sided tape to hold the blank to the backer board. Surtape is a brand of double-sided duct tape you can pick up at any home improvement store. Mary has recently been partial to double-sided golfer's tape, the kind used on golf club handles. You should be able to find it at a sports supply store. Hope this helps!

Mark, in another video (simple leaf), Mary uses a vise to press the work tightly on the base, then trims the tape around the work before starting. She explains well why she does it.
