Beauty standards are very personal, but for me Eva Green's accent, posture and line delivery make her captivating. Her chemistry with Daniel is electric AND playful. If the chemistry isn't there, the whole thing falls apart and they really sell their connection.
@@cockshield I definitely think they had some chemistry, just a little more laid back and quieter than his Vesper relationship, like two introverts who got together. The problem was just Eva Green & Daniel Craig as Vesper & a newer 007 set the bar so high, you really can't compete. I'm glad they didn't try to just copy Vesper though, nobody could pull off that mix of verbal sparring and vulnerability that Eva Green brought.
25:45 The martini that Bond orders in this scene is the exact recipe that Bond orders in the original book Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. While Lillet (a type of aperitif) is still made, Kina Lillet (which Bond specifies, so named because it contains quinine) no longer does, having been reformulated in 1985, so to have Bond request it in 2006 is anachronistic but clearly a loving wink & nod to the novel.
Other similarities, Le Chiffre had lost a bunch of his client's money (the client in the book being the Soviet organisation Smersh, or Smiert Spionam, meaning death to spies). And Vesper killed herself in the end leaving a suicide note confessing to being a spy. Bond's words "The bitch is dead" is the very last sentence of the book.
I feel like you accidentally left one last little bit of info out about the drink, Bond in the film says off-handedly to Vesper “I’ll have to think of a name for that.” The cocktail recipe that Fleming wrote into the novel became referred to as The Vesper or a Vesper Martini when people ordered it in real life after the book was out.
When I make mine I use 100 proof vodka and add a dash of angostura bitters to more closely replicate some of the old Kina Lillet bitter flavour. It's a strong drink.
2 things: 1. I'm surprised you didn't catch the reference when Vesper said "I'm the MONEY" and Bond replied with "Every PENNY of it" 2. In previous Bond movies, the game of choice was Baccarat, but the producers of this movie changed in to poker because they figured more people could follow it.
@mikerhodes8454 who plays Baccarat anyway ? 🤷♀ not to be confused with Burt BACARACH who actually composed the score for the original Casino Royale ' 67 the hot mess version 🤦♂ Now that you mention it i notice the moneypenny reference now and i did catch a few others notably the vodka martini line '' Do i look like i give a damn ?'' this was a banger of a movie i love how it's a darker version of Bond which was much needed after the Brosnan years Yes yes and the sly nods throughout and at the end of it all instead of placing it at the beginning Bond .JAMES Bond !😉
Jen you do realize that you've gone from "Does James Bond sleep in pajamas?" in Dr. No to "I hope his balls are alright?" in Casino Royale? I'm so proud of you.
Did you notice that the official James Bond theme never played until the final scene. When he introduces himself to Mr White. Throughout the film we see young James make mistake after mistake & he never introduces himself in his iconic fashion. James is young & more of a blunt object rather than a precise surgical killing machine. The Director did that intentionally with the music at the end. To show the audience that after Vesper’s death, now, James finally has become the man/agent we all know. He finally becomes James Bond, hence the music playing in full & the proper introduction.
37:11... "I hope his balls are okay." HAHAHA!! That made me laugh hard. Just an FYI. No spoilers, but the five Daniel Craig films are all tied together like one long storyline that slowly unfolds. There's a lot more going on than is revealed in this film. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the next four.
One of the most anticipated reactions of the year. This is one of, if not the best bond movie ever, I remember when Daniel Craig was casted to play James Bond a lot of people didn’t like that idea but once this movie came out they changed their minds and he became a lot of people’s favourite bond.
@@nluna75 If you want to see Parkour galore 😆 then check out District 13 and of course David Belle showcasing his incredible skills in that one What an amazing way to reboot the series Daniel Craig is just Brilliant in this being more true to the original character of 007 in what is IMO one of the best movies of the series . CHEERS .
No Moneypenny, but we have our own JennyPenny. A constant in a world of change. So pleased you enjoyed DC as Bond - he's my personal second. Sean will always be the GOAT.
Welcome to the "Dark Age" of Daniel Craig as Bond...James Bond!💘 Once more, R.I.P. to Chris Cornell, and "Thanks" for giving Us one of the Best Bond Songs Ever: "You Know My Name" still Rocks today!👍
You should REALLY watch Layer Cake- it was almost DC’s audition for Bond but is as clever as knives out and as gritty as this bond! Love your reactions as always!
In that case you should react to TWIN TOWN which is the movie that catapulted dougray Scott and rhys ivans to world acclaimed it even has theon greyjoy uncle has the director and his dad as the farmer who eats the magic mushrooms his sister Lilly allen who's a famous singer in the UK is in the movie when she was 10
One of the darkest James Bond movies ever made. Henry Cavill, Sam Worthington, Matthew Rhys, Rupert Friend, Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, Dougray Scott, and Julian McMahon were considered for 007 James Bond until Daniel Craig was cast.
Cavill looked the part, but like Brosnan, that’s it. If they did a documentary about Bond with re-enactments, he would have been perfect. He’d look the part on the movie poster, but in terms of capturing the character from the books, I doubt it. This generation grew up with Pierce, so they want that kind of Bond. They want Marvel Bond.
Casino Royale is such a fantastic film, not just one of the best in the series, but legitimately one of the best action films ever made, and exactly what was needed after the over-the-top excess of Die Another Day. It's fantastically well-written and unique in its structure, devoting the entire midsection to a poker game, having the villain be killed off way before the end of the film, and instead making the third act a big tragic romance. Bond and Vesper have one of the best relationships in the series, you truly buy their chemistry and believe in their romance to such an extent that, despite this blatantly being Bond's origin story, you end up _not_ wanting him to become the man we know him as. The film does a fantastic job at humanising Bond, and allowing Daniel Craig to give a phenomenal performance that immediately silenced his naysayers. The rest of the cast are fantastic too, Eva Green's Vesper is one of, if not the best Bond women in the series, Mads Mikkelsen is a formidable villain, and Judi Dench is as delightful as ever. Add onto that some of the most awesomely brutal (and brutally awesome) action scenes in the series, and a killer David Arnold score that manages to retain that traditional Bond sound without using the Bond theme itself until the very end, and you have a genuine masterpiece. You're in for a treat with the Daniel Craig era, it's very different to what's come before - a lot darker, more introspective, and with way less of the traditional silliness associated with the series - but it's always really interesting to see unfold in front of new eyes
"I'm famished." 34:40 Nobody uses that word anymore. It's a great word! I knew you'd love the new Bond! You had fun again, and another score to love. (You're gonna love the ones to come and the intro songs!) You are correct the new Bond movies are MUCH darker, which is fine. It gives them more seriousness. There is a lot on the line. It seems more realistic! As I always say watching you react is SO fun. You really enjoy the movies you watch!
Oh my God I love your props. The stacks of cash was awesome but the bow tie definitely made this video!!! I've watched a dozen people react to this film. Your reaction is the best so far. Keep 'em coming!
Trust me when I tell you that this film gets better with repeated viewing. And I listen to the score all the time in the car. Can't get enough of it! ♠️♣️♥️♦️🚙🇬🇧
Casino Royale is my favorite of the new Bonds with Skyfall a close second. Daniel Craig was an excellent bond. Spectre was the worst of the bunch. Apparantly the black guy in the opening is the (or one of the) original creators of Parkour.
Only twice does Bond become so emotionally attached to a woman in the Ian Fleming novels. Once to Vesper and later to Tracey, both with tragic results. This explains why he is so wary of becoming attached in future and remains distant and apparently treats seducing females as a necessary but nonetheless pleasurable part of his job. He is somewhat misogynistic and unemotional, but it is his tragic past that has made him choose this path.
I wouldn’t try and place this into a timeline. Particularly with what comes later, I’d advise seeing this as its own universe. Otherwise not a lot makes sense
Nice review again Jen. Casino Royale is one of the best Bond films, sadly for me this is as good as it would ever get during the Craig era, although Skyfall is also fairly good. I'll be interested to see what you think of the other films left to review, particularly No Time to Die (which I absolutely hate!)
Respect your opinion, but I don't know, Christoph Waltz kills it in everything he's in, and his more personal hatred for James was deliciously evil. Le Chiffre by comparison seemed to only come head to head with Bond directly in poker.
Great reaction Jen. This one is probably my favorite Daniel Craig Bond film, but I enjoy them all. Soundgarden is one of my all time favorite bands, so I really enjoy the Chris Cornell theme song to this one.
Personally, I was a bit disappointed with the torture scene - the book is the superior version. I remember Eon productions hyped that there would be a lot of closed legs in the cinema, but during my screening the cinema erupted with laughter when Craig made the 'scratching my balls' gag, which was not in the book. In the book, you lose count of how many times he got it in the balls.
I think Casino Royale embodies everything i wanna see in a Bond Movie. A cool and masculine and charming James Bond, a smart and witty female counterpart like Vesper who also has weaknesses (a characteristic you wouldnt see in todays Hollywood), cool Action, good Music, a great Villain like Mads Mikkelsen, cool Locations. I could go on, definitely one of the best Bond Movies for me. I also think because it is based on James earlier years as a 00 Agent, Vepsers death made him even more distant and detached to Women later on but that is just a guess. Sébastien Foucan was one of the Inventors of Parcour, at the time he was clear one of the best in the World and it was so cool to see it in the Movie.
Probably the best Bond-Movie and Eva Green and Mads Mikkelsen are just outstanding. Too bad the Rest of the Craig-Movies weren't even close. "This Movie hates Balls" 😂😂😂😂
❤❤❤ Great job, Ms. Moneyjenny. This is not your Peter Sellers, CR. Daniel's not my favorite Bond, but he is the closest to who James is supposed to be. Love the opening foot chase. Great title sequence and song. Trust me, nobody wants to go through that torture sequence. If you'd like some Daniel in the wild west, COWBOYS AND ALIENS. Harrison Ford is an unpleasant fellow, and there are sea turtles. Hug the beasties
Did you notice some of the same characters from the (1967) Casino Royale? Vesper (Ursula Andress), Lê Chiffre (Orson Welles), even Mathis was there. They played baccarat instead of poker but a lot of the plot, outside of the absurdity, was the same.
What i like about you and your reacts...is that you do also comment on the score that is so so important...you are so musical Jen..loving it..of course all the explosions, stacks, champagne, but that you do love music so music so much, makes them so much interesting...have a great Sunday..Neighbour from the East
Can't wait to see what Jen thinks of the carpet beater scene. Ouch! 🤫😳 (She did not disappoint! His pain radiates thru the screen but he doesn't give Le Chiffre any satisfaction.) I hated the title sequence first time around; what can I say? I was obviously an idiot, because it's great! Jen's reactions to the airport sequence were adorable in their enthusiasm. Great fun work from Bond, Jen Bond. (Dug the bowtie.)
yea,JEN had spot on reasons regarding Vesper, and gave her a little pass in the betrayal. BUt this was a v good re boot and even tho I dont put Craig at the top HE did a great interpretation of the emotions Bond goes through. Now I have to re read the OG Bond novels as My 1st boss gave me I think 6 of the paper backs. Ian Fleming at 1st didn't like the casting of SEAN C but then changed his mind after seeing the 1st 2 films
@@michaelceraso1977 The movie version is quite close to the novel Casino Royale in tone (even if the film's version of the ending is a little tacked on). The novels that follow are rather different, molding what became the Fleming formula. Check out From Russia with Love, Dr No, and Goldfinger. Be warned: Some of Fleming's attitudes are *very* "of their time" and more than dubious! On Her Majesty's Secret Service is great and possibly the most similar to Casino due to its ending.
I know you liked this movie Jen, and that makes me happy as a viewer... but now that I've seen Casino Royale 3 times, I'm of the opinion that this Bond is just kind of boring and the Daniel Craig movies take themselves too seriously for my tastes. I miss the wackiness of the older Bond films, and hope they get back to that with the next-generation bond. But that seems pretty unlikely considering that apparently Henry Cavill just absolutely killed it in his audition for the new movie, and I don't see him being a wacky 007. Lol
great movie, great scores by Arnold in this and the next one, but the craig era ended up being depressing and the last couple i won't even watch again. This is based on the first Ian Fleming novel and it ends pretty much the same way with Vesper's suicide (which Bond doesn't see) and Bond's line 'the bitch is dead'. All the stuff at the beginning before the casino was invented for the movie. Another little tidbit: in the novel the casino is in France and it's the same one Bond meets Tracy in book #10 On Her Majesty's Secret Service
It's strange that the title of your video is "New handsome Bond", because when the casting of Daniel Craig was announced the most common reaction we heard all over the internet was from females, who complained that he was not a good choice for Bond because they thought he was NOT handsome.
Although Sean Connery was "my Bond," I was impressed with Casino Royale. Perhaps this was the best Bond film ever, but we don't have to stop with this. We now have an opportunity to come up with an even better Bond and an even better series of Bond films if we don't let our past get in the way.
Great reaction Jennypenny. Vesper is my second favorite Bond Girl. When Eon finally got the rights to Casino Royale, (the first Bond novel), after years of legal wrangling with Kevin McClorry, they decided to reboot the franchise, and start Bond at the beginning of his 00 career. It made for a phenomenal movie. The decision to not play the Bond theme fully until the end was to signify that that was when he became the Bond that we know. No spoilers for Quantum, but it will be interesting to see how you will react to it without having to wait 3 years for it to come out. I think the wait had an effect on how some of us long term fans reacted to it when it finally came out. Again, great job by the best reactor on RU-vid.
That's incorrect, the rights to Casino Royale were owned by Sony who exchanged the rights with MGM for the rights to Spider-Man in 1999. The rights to the organisation SPECTRE and the character of Ernst Stavro Blofeld were tied up in McClory's estate due to the issues surrounding the Bond novel Thunderball. MGM regained the rights to these in 2013 after McClory died in 2006.
Skyfall is massively enjoyable, even though its plot is like a piece of swiss cheese. The rest of them though are terrible, and I'd probably rank them very last.

Fun factoid - Eva Green, who played Vesper Lynd failed her first screen test as the character. This and Skyfall are my favorite Daniel Craig as Bond films.
Brilliant stuff as always Jen! Plus I love how youtube's "system" has resulted in you having to mute every time M says "what the hell is he doing?", kind of implying she's saying something much worse lol. Judi Dench, more like Rude-i Dench!
Favorite Bond girl... The pakour guy at the beginning is Frenchman Sebastien Foucan, the founder of freerunning and one of the first to do parkour. (Parkour is from French word parcours).
_"Well this is why he doesn't trust women."_ The only reactor I've seen so far who understands this about his character. In the books, Bond is chauvinistic, but it's less of a hatred of women than a general shield to prevent himself from being hurt again. He doesn't get close to women because he falls too easily and it makes him vulnerable, when he needs to have a cold exterior. I feel a lot of the older movies really twisted this theme and just made him a ruthless mysoginist, which twisted the perception of James as a character. But I feel the Daniel Craig movies really did a lot to reconcile it. Even the end line, "it's done, and the b*tch is dead." is lifted straight from the books, and you can hear in his voice that's not how he viewed her or would generally refer to women, but him forcefully preventing himself from feeling any grief. It's not healthy and it's not right, but you understand that's the way he's found to exist in his world. SPOILER: And of course, he eventually learns a better way and to be more human again.
The Craig era started with a very good film (Craig´s best in the series) and ended with a total mess (NTTD). Craig never felt for me as a right choice (too brutal, lack of charisma and elegance, just an ordinary street killer). Hope, the next will be more back to the roots.
I've got a slightly eccentric take - I like Craig as Bond, but I think he'd have made an *amazing* Bond villain. Also, as a fan of book Bond - I love that this is a little closer to the Fleming style. From time to time the franchise does that, which is why I think Timothy Dalton was ahead of his time.
So glad you to to this and you're a Bond fan for life now :D A great entry for the Craig legacy and Eva Green is just death (sigh). Nice job JennyPenny!
It's like "I don't know if this Batman has dead parents" or "I don't know if this blonde teen will die in this horror movie." You really always do know.
About time!-this was the first 007 novel and most of the key elements were from the original source(the torture and "The b*#%* is dead" line for example...)-David Arnold deliberately witheld the Bond theme and used splices on the character's developments( the card game, tuxedo scene...) and in the end credits-the theme was played in full signaling 007's final evolution to his hard, cold and brutal origin. Can't wait for you to watch "Skyfall".
Just a quick note about silencers for guns. They don't work nearly as well as the ones made by Hollywood. Yeah, the gun is still quite loud. Great reaction / review as always. Every Daniel Craig, Bond film, is outstanding. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
When this came out, I'd only seen Craig in Road to Perdition. I was on the fence about a blonde Bond, but he is fantastic; my second favorite after Connery.
From now on, the following movies maintain a continuation, they are linked to each other, they are not independent or self-conclusive as the previous ones.
I love that they didn’t just start the movie with all the tropes. They gradually built them throughout and climaxes with his ‘Bond, James Bond’ and then the full power of the original song.
