Ride from the front of Shay Engine #4 on newly restored track, the former C&O Durbin Route, starting in Cass WV. This track was washed out in the 1985 floods caused from hurricane Juan. Thanks to the Durbin & Greenbriar Valley Railroad for bringing this piece of railroading history back to life ! Recorded April 23, 2017

Really nice to know that this connection will finally be restored. Makes me wonder if that means Buffalo Creek and Gauley 4 (The 2-8-0) will be put in the shop after Climax 9 is restored.

Ever since I was a kid in the '70s, always wondered where that went. Guess that is how the sawn timber left towards a mainline.

Actually, the traffic went both north and south The direction of the video is north towards Durbin. That was the C&O 's connection to the Western Maryland RR. If you went south, that would take you to the C&O Mainline in Caldwell WV. I'm happy to report the 14 miles between Cass and Durbin is close to opening. The D&GVRR has finished hanging the bridge iron on the new Trout Run bridge. The bridge needs rails and then some tamping and alignment work. When it opens, it will be the first time you can ride between Durbin and Cass since 1985.

"The wheels on the train go flat and flat." LOL Just curious. The rail looks smooth. Are the caboose wheels bad or is the rail not as smooth as it looks?

The camera was mounted to the front of Shay #5 on a grab bar. The track is rough and the vibration on the grab bar just made it worse.

Buffalo Creek & Gauley No. 4 heads to the Mountain State May 20, 2015 SPENCER, N.C. - The fabled, well-traveled, and much beloved Consolidation known as “Old Slobberface,” Buffalo Creek & Gauley No. 4, an icon of the last gasp of regular steam-powered freight in the early 1960s, is on its way home today. A convoy of four tractor-trailers was moving the 1926 Baldwin from its long-term home at the North Carolina Transportation Museum to its new owners at the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad in West Virginia, the state where it spent its entire working career. A crane hoisted the boiler, running gear, flues, cab, and miscellaneous parts for the locomotive that last ran in 2001. It was the subject of an aborted restoration at Spencer that led to its sale to new owners with plans to restore it by 2016 and operate it along the Greenbrier River. The locomotive was a favorite of steam-starved railfan photographers in the 1960s who found the Buffalo Creek & Gauley’s locomotives and homespun charm irresistible. After the BC&G shut down in 1965, No. 4 worked for the Quakertown & Eastern tourist railroad in Pennsylvania and the Southwest Virginia Scenic in Hiltons, Va., before being sold to the non-profit support organization for the new transportation museum in the former Southern Railway shop complex at Spencer. The engine’s restoration by a group of retired Southern Railway employees turned around the museum, and its role in building up the museum is acknowledged by all. Because the engine was a saturated steam engine without superheating, it often had a dirty face, leading to its disgusting nickname. But the desire to see it back in West Virginia pulling line-haul trains was great. The engine will be rebuilt at the Cass Scenic Railroad for this purpose and returned to the rails of West Virginia.

This line was the original C & O Durbin Line. Built in the early 1900's it was primarily built to service the saw mill at Cass WV.

is the line between cass and durbin finished and will cass steam or durbin rockett equipment be used in 2018 ?
@jamescleveland6575
@jamescleveland6575 6 лет назад
I was told the line could be ready by the end of 2018. D&GV has the side rod, ex, Buffalo Creek and Gauley steam engine that needs some work, but would be great for this line. They also have a couple of diesels that would work as well.

James Cleveland did you have to get permission to have the camera on the engine ? if so how did you keep it from falling off the train
@jamescleveland6575
@jamescleveland6575 7 лет назад
Hi RP 2000, I was with a small private tour when this video was taken and yes I received permission from the D&GV Railroad President to mount my camera. Railroads are private property, you should always ask permission if you are going to video on their property. I mounted my camera to the grab rail on the front of the locomotive's truck. I used a go pro handle bar mount. This was not a good idea as the grab bar's vibration was more that I anticipated and leading to a video that was not as good as I hoped it would be.

Someone should organize a way of restoring some of these cars and clean up the tracks and whats around them to make it that much more beautiful..........They should never be retired.....People love these trains....A few tracks should be open and vibrant around the world. They could make money from this.....There is an interest. I would love to experience a few days of watching and being around these trains in some town somewhere where they have beautiful shops and sights.

Uncle uncle, thanks for watching. The train is very slow because Cass Railroad uses geared locomotives. These engines were designed for power and traction, not for speed. I recently visited Thailand, you live in a beautiful country. Thanks again for watching.
