350 Chevy engine saved from the scrapyard.
In this video, we have an engine pulled from the scrapyard to be installed in a fishing boat. MuggyWeld.com customer Scott Yerges noticed the starter mount was broken at the corner of the motor where the starter is bolted to the engine. We at Muggy Weld LLC get several calls and orders needing the 77 electrodes for starter mount problems. I can't tell you how many times I've heard customers say the engine was on the stand, someone knocked it over and broke the area where the starter bolted. The 77 electrodes can be used as a TIG or stick. The 77 arc rod is machinable, so it can also be drilled and tapped. Scott didn't feel the guys at the scrapyard knew the mount was broken, so he ordered some welding rod from us and fixed himself.
We get a lot of calls asking if the old buzz box will work for the job. If the box is still in good working order, I don't see why not. Scott's Sears and Roebuck and Co. worked as well as any old arc welder could.
Scott sent us some photos of the job, and we asked about a backstory to process. This is his synopsis. Used motor from wrecking yard, appears clean and tight. Using a 40-year-old buzz box? A little preheat. First pass flows well. I welded roughly an inch at a time. The Muggy rod built up well, no issues at all. I used a needle scaler to remove slag. Very little porosity. Finished nicely! Repaired it in my garage! Thanks, Muggy Weld; your welding rod is incredible. It made for an easy repair for something I was dreading. Scott found the engine, fixed the problem after he identified it. He used the swing set he built to install the motor. Then sent his son and his family back home with a great running boat.
