Another one sold! Damn I am so pleased with my Revolver 1800KV. I now see I don't need the Mamba X for my TRX4. The Sidewinder 4 will do perfect! I look forward to spending MORE $$ with Holmes Hobbies. Thanks for these tech videos.
Definitely appreciate the review, as I have several sensorless outrunner motors that I had nearly given up on, due to unsatisfactory performance in a scale truck setup. I knew a higher quality(higher cost) esc would yield smoother response, but it would’ve defeated the purpose, from my perspective. I ordered two SV4’s after watching this. Hopefully Castle will thank you one way or another.
Glad it helped you out! You will be very pleased with the outrunners again. We didn't sell ours sensorless for many years because the startup wasn't good enough to put our name on. Now we can do it and feel good :D
Sweet! Just in time to go into my new F350 Dually Project Build, Revolver Combo and adding your wicked servo to the deal, one stop shopping & on a budget can't be beat. Really liked how ya'll demonstrated the Drag Brake capability as well. Another great video from the best motor builder on the planet, thanks for sharing it with us!
Thanks John, for showing me what I NEEDED to see!! I mention too often that I have very limited spending cash, always.... I'll have to see what you're calling "reasonable". No disrespect, but for some people, a good price is quite a bit lower than someone else's. 😉 I'm in a predicament where I need very good, very slow speed control AND a cost of not much more than $70-80 for the ESC. THEN I've got to try to find the money for one of your Outrunner Brushless Motors (2100-2600kv range). Not easy at all in my position, where I'm insisting on Products in the Premium Class!!! A Miracle could happen too.......... 😱😜 lol Carmine
Won't be happening at this time. Trust me when I say the drag is strong enough with the right motor behind it! At 30% the drag is far more than tire traction.
Ive builded a 6x6 of traxxas emaxx suspension..im using 2 sw4's.with titan550 daul brush motors!! An awesome combo on a 22lb rig with a crawler on deck!! Sorry don't have pics
Thank you for all the great info you put out here to the community. I like your soldering stand to hold the wiring, where can Obtain one or if it is homemade do you have the plans/instructions for it?
Hey John how do you feel about the bullet connector directly on the board? I would wanna run in my sand rail but i remember the original VXL was plagued with the bullets breaking off the board and not being able to repair them.
Hey John, while waiting for Crawlmaster Minis to come off backorder and ship, could I get away with running a sidewinder 4 on 4S? The set up is a Holmes Revolver 1000 KV, and a Holmes SHV500 V3 (direct powered). Also running a Torquemaster Winch off of it's own battery. This is in a NSWD with a 2low tranny. So nothing heavy, not sure the weight of the rig but, it's a C1 build with limited added weight. Thanks for your input.
If im running 3s on like say a rustler for street bashing w/ 2400kv brushless motor, would i want to use a bec for my steering servo? Or am i gunna be happy without? Thankyou bro, awesome demo!
Thanks for the video and info. Just getting some old vehicles out and dusting them off and looks like new tech will make them much more useful and enjoyable!
I love that you show how well this combo works but you use the trx4 that has very low gearing cause of 2 speed. How would this crawl in say a scx10 2 rtr with much higher standard gearing? Would it be just as smooth to crawl with?
Enjoying your video's John. Do you know what the ESC resolution is or number of individual steps on the throttle curve the ESC has? Also, I live in a relatively cold climate and that combination beanie and cap is damn fine idea.
Any chance you can do a video on the same set up but showcase the Snubnose? I have a build using the TRX 4 drive train that it would be perfect for size wise but I can not seem to find any videos on it. The size makes me hesitant.
What sort of use? mostly crawling, or will you be using second gear a lot? The snubnose would be just dandy for mostly crawling, but would run a bit hot with extended 2nd gear use.
As I work at a local hobby shop your videos are a great sales and reference tool to help eliminate all the miss use of information. Seriously thank you as a friend and fellow hobby enthusiast.
Hey John .. excellent review of the SW4 .. I just bought this exact same setup recently for my SCX10 II .. problem I'm experiencing with this (on 3S LiPo) .. it's seems very fast compared to the videos I have seen with this setup, and I have been unable to locate anything on the web as to what the BEST settings are for the SideWinder 4 and this beast of a motor ?
Hey John! I’m loving what I’m seeing with this combo. I’ve heard mixed info on whether the revolver motor is water proof/water resistant though. Can you add to this and clarify some information? And I don’t mean completely submerging the rig under water. I’m lookin for something brushless that I can do more scale water crossings with and not worry about it damaging the motor.
That's a nice setup. I am wondering why there seems to be motor spool up time before it moves. I seen another video with the same motor with your ble ESC in an SCX10 but it would move quickly and was so much quieter. Would the noise level have to do with the ESC and the transmission for the quick response in movement?
Can my sidewinder micro 2 be updated to this same software? Or do I have to buy this ESC.and for a 2.2 shafty comp crawler would 1800kv or 1400kv SNUB NOSE revolver be better? And what size revolver would have better drag brake?
No, this is mostly hardware changes making the SW4 startup as good as it is. Lower kv and larger motor will have the best drag, 1400kv 540 size. I would personally throw in a 1400 snubnose into a comp rig.
Got this combo put in my Ascender I can't say enough about it. Good price point and step up from my bushed setup. Very surprised about how much control you can really get out of this.If you like the slow crawl with some wheel speed you have to get this. I love the sound of the revolver perfect for my soon to be c1 rig!
So this esc can't handle the power that the Sidewinder 3 can?? Because the sw3 says 15V... And 3s is actually 12.6V max.. so could this thing actually run a 4s like the SW3 could?
Hi John. Great video as usual. Can you elaborate on why the linear BEC is no bueno for crawling? Also not understanding why an external BEC would be needed on 3S.
It's a nice one if the KV choices are in the zone you want. I'm working on some higher KV lower pole count outrunners, but getting them to start smooth is a big challenge.
Why doesn't this esc have a amp rating like most esc? i have looked everywhere and amp rating are none existent except for bec amp rating. If anyone can tell me that would be great. Thanks
Hello. Yes I'm late to the game. My friend is a new crawler. Ran same combo an fried his steering servo, he for got to wire 12 volt.to servo,,Did you just jump.power only from battery or both negative an 12v.to .servo an use a single signal.wire to receiver..sorry.to spund dumb..
Outrunner motors have been used in crawlers for 12 years, over a half decade before other brushless solutions came to market. While four pole and two pole motors are more popular these days since sensored is widely available, there is no beating a Revolver for sensorless operation. The sW4 controls a 4 pole rather well too, with proper gearing you would be fine with an 8lb rig.
No need to go that long, as it becomes a poor motor because of the winding diffuculty and rotor flex. We have a 3663 Puller Pro XL in 3500kv. holmeshobbies.com/motors/brushless-motors/puller-pro-series/puller-pro-bl-540-xl.html
+HolmesHobbies thanks for the link and info love all your stuff I think I can use that motor.. we do a lot of outlaw drag around here. just getting I'm to scale trucks.
I see a lot of information on the sw4 hardware being better for sensorless, but do the new hardware changes improve brushed performance over the castle mamba x or the ble or br-xl?
I do discuss it, but not with the terms they coined. It's a combination of dithered switching frequency to reduce switching losses , and a synchronous rectification to reduce diode losses. Most of the gains are found when running under 50% duty at high load, when diode losses would typically be the majority of heat.
@@HolmesHobbies Awesome thanks for the reply now I just need to figure out if it is an upgrade from the VXL-3s or just a sidegrade. Any chance you have an opinion on that? Vehicle is a Slash 2wd LCG VXL used mostly on paved or prepared off road surfaces.
Almost anything will be an upgrade. I would probably get a Mamba X, because it would work for about any other 10th scale rig you may have in the future, and also has great sensorless startup.
@@HolmesHobbies I have a Monster Slash with the 1512/MMX combo and another rig with the SCT 1410/SW3 combo. This truck is for my son to learn on. So I am trying to see how cheap I can go without going with no-name ebay parts. Just making notes to remember the upgrade path I am going to use as parts go bad. Because I am going to let him run the Velineon system in the ground first. :)
I have a Sidewider4 with 2200kv outrunner motor. After test and tunning works like a champ. Dont like the awfull sound😂Will change for a crawmaster mini v3
