Today I present to you another Monument of Małopolska, the destroyed Castle in Rytro. Castles in Poland are mostly ruined buildings. Some left to their own devices in the form of ruins. Others are places where Castles used to be. Next, these are the monuments that we are trying to rebuild, which I think is a good direction if we know what the fortress looked like from the old era.
Such an example is the Castle in the small town of Rytro on the Poprad River, close to the border with Slovakia in southern Poland, which is still being partially rebuilt. The castle is located on a high hill among the forests in a very relaxing and beautiful area of the Beskid Sądecki Mountains. There used to be an important trade route here and this military outpost, like many other castles in the south, guarded the route from which many a Polish King profited.
The stronghold is accompanied by various legends and this partly contributed to its destruction due to the search for hidden treasures of old knights or robbers in it and in the surrounding area. The glory days of this building were strictly the times of the Middle Ages and the Jagiellonian dynasty. What followed was a slow decline. After the Swedish Deluge, its further degradation took place. Until complete devastation, where for a long time it appears to us as an inconspicuous ruin on a hill.
As I said, recent times are a slow restoration of old Polish castles. Over the last few years, Rytro Castle has been restored from destruction and is now beginning to resemble its former, great appearance. The work is ongoing and hopefully this castle will return to the medieval map of Poland.
