Ending #72
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
ドラキュラII 呪いの封印
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Komani
Nintendo
1987
Not all sequels are bad and if done correctly, many can be produced and a loyal fanbase will follow every twist and plot turn as a creator’s world is brought to life and realized through the passion of fans. It can be a wonderful thing, and anyone who is human geeks on something.
Some titles can break even with fun gameplay and good mechanics and will limp along until another sequel can redeem the mistakes of its predecessor. Despite all of this, some franchises have the “too big to fail” corporate mentality. Regardless of all the academic rhetoric you throw at them, ravenous fans will still purchase a title simply because it is said title.
It’s hard to determine if Castlevania was meant to be a one time game or if it was meant to be a series. The timeline that was created by Koji Igarashi leaves out several titles like Legends, Legacy of Darkness and Castlevania 64, giving no apparent reason to their removal beyond the convenient excuse of them not fitting in correctly in the timeline. Several years later, Konami released an updated timeline with the games Igarashi removed, putting them back in as side stories.
Both timelines are created after the fact and it is used more as a tool to try and link the games together in a consistent universe then to show that the games were actually created this way from the start. Simon’s Quest is put in the timeline at 1698, but the dates on Dracula’s Tombstone are 1431-76 - a reference to Vlad the Impaler and inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Regardless if subsequent titles in the series were meant to be part of a cohesive timeline, the first two at the least are directly linked, taking place only years apart.
It’s hard to tell if any of the top Executives at Konami were meddling in any of the games being developed at the time. Corporate manipulation really only became a thing when video games became a mainstream medium of entertainment. In-house programming jobs were the norm at that time as many games during that generation were both produced and developed by one company.
What made this game so obtuse for its time? Given the popularity of the first title, Konami probably gave the development team a long leash to realise a sequel. The game had grand ideas and capitalized on several emerging trends in the industry - Open world exploration similar to Metroid, RPG light elements and action like Zelda II, and time-based day/night cycles. It was a lofty endeavor that set out to redefine side scrolling adventure titles, and to mainstream and economize RPG elements, but the system limitations at the time posed a monumental hurdle and the Simon’s Quest team ended up with a title that was clumsy and awkward.
Taken as is, the game is enjoyable, the music and sound really pop in that famous Konami fashion, and the controls are more user friendly than the first. What kills the game ultimately for many is the localization.
The entire game, from the opening story screen to the ending dialogue is a failure on a scale that almost makes it an academic study in itself. The intent of the developer was perhaps to leave subtle clues through Japanese wordplay, inferences, and references. This got horribly perverted and ended up with only about 10% of the clues being useful, the rest being downright misleading.
An unfortunate reality of this poor translation was the difficulty. The game inherently was not that hard. When it came to gameplay, this is the easiest of the Nintendo trilogy. You gained levels by killing enemies and grew stronger by leveling and upgrading your whip. The challenge never really ramped up, but would remain a near constant. The only difficulty came in the form of dialogue.
Some will perceive length as difficulty, but with patience that is alleviated. The game also introduced a grind mechanism whereby you gather the next item for strength or progress you needed you obtain hearts. Hearts are a currency in this one Castlevania. No other game in the series incorporated still beating cardiac muscles as a currency for trading. It wasn’t just a black market job either. You wanted to upgrade your whip you needed 250 of these things. Garlic? sure that will only cost you fifty. Also on side, was a crystal trading scheme going around.
There are many reasons to hate this game and only a few reasons to like it. Whether the developers were underestimating their audience or overestimating their ambition, something got lost in the translation and North American gamers paid the price. What could have been a great sequel, one that would elevate the series to the next level, turned out to be a much debated, much talked about blip in game history.

Simon Belmont is so badass that immediatley after killing Dracula and being cursed by him for 7 years, he than goes on a huge journey to find the scattered remains of him, just so he can RESSURECT and KILL him again, therefore ending the curse, and even after all that, after his sworn enemy had thought he had the last luagh, the man still has the human decency to give his nemesis a proper burial, what a legend.

Despite what you'd normally expect with the rest of the game being Japanese the endings had glorious Engrish, and even then they got the points across better. Though this line's still hilariously bad. "His blood and sweat penetrated into the ground of Transylvania will bring us full-blown flowers with happiness next spring." Yes, this is actually what it says.

Here’s how I interpreted the endings: Simon has 15 days to break the curse but 8 days left to live. If you beat the game in 8 days or less Dracula is defeated, the curse is lifted and Simon lives and buries Dracula (best ending). If you beat the game in 9-15 days Dracula is defeated and the curse is lifted, but Simon dies a few days after burying Dracula because his body is too broken down (normal ending). And if you beat the game in 16 days or more Dracula is defeated and the curse is lifted, but Simon dies almost immediately after the battle before Dracula is buried (worst ending). As for which ending is canon, I think it was confirmed that the best ending is the canon ending. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
@ThunderFist1978
@ThunderFist1978 4 года назад
Mia Good analogy, but the normal ending says they still need somebody to break the curse, which indicates that the curse still lingers. Also, I believe Konami has said that Simon did indeed die at the conclusion of the battle, as it has been said that Simon is the only Belmont Dracula managed to kill, only he had to settle for taking Simon with him as he himself was dying. As I understand, the best ending is indeed the canon ending, although the text is most likely mixed up for at least some of the endings. Many of us believe that to be the case.

The text for the three endings was mixed up. Seems like for the bleakest ending (gray monochrome) the text for the middle ending (blue sky) should be used, while the blue sky ending should use the red sky ending's text. Thus... GRAY SKY ENDING: "Although the confrontation between Simon Belmont and Dracula has concluded, Simon couldn't survive his fatal wounds. Transylvania's only hope is a young man who will triumph over evil and rid the city of Dracula's deadly curse." BLUE SKY ENDING: "The encounter with Dracula is terminated. Simon Belmont has put an end to the eternal darkness in Transylvania. His blood and sweat have penetrated the earth and will induce magic and happiness for those who walk on this land." RED SKY ENDING: "The battle has consummated. Now peace and serenity have been restored to Transylvania and the people are free of Dracula's curse forever. And you, Simon Belmont, will always be remembered for your bravery and courage."

No. The legend of Dracula is based on Vlad The Impaler Tepes, who was a Romanian ruler and warrior of Christian (Orthodox) background. In any iteration of the vampire stories surrounding Vlad Tepes (the real person) being transformed into Dracula (the mythical creature) it would stand to reason that the headstone placed at his grave would be adorned with a cross.

Very messed up in my opinion. The good ending with red sky seems worse than normal ending with blue sky, because Dracula wakes up from his grave, right? I think the good ending should've used a blue sky with Dracula who stayed in his grave, dead and the normal ending should've used the red sky with Dracula waking up from his grave afterwards. The bad ending should've used the text from normal ending. The good ending should've used the text from bad ending, because it feels more cheerful to me than the original one on good ending. The good ending's text seems to fit better the normal ending, but that's just me probably. It was terribly screwed up or was it intentional? I really don't think it was intentional though. Another thing I came up with.. on bad ending Simon's dead, but Dracula also stays dead. In normal ending (from my point of view the red sky one) Simon survives, but Dracula wakes up from his grave and the curse is not gone. What is worse? And did Simon die on normal ending or no? If he does then normal ending seems worse than the bad ending to me. Well I just came to the conclusion that good ending feels like a normal ending. I said good ending's text (originally the red sky) feels like the text for normal ending (which should be with red sky in my opinion) So basically the game's good ending is a normal ending to me. Sorry if you have a headache from reading this phylosophical conclusions of mine lol.

I’m pretty sure the developers mixed up the text here. The first ending you if you take too long is all grey with no Simon, but the text is the happy ending. The second ending requires you to play better, the background is all bright and cheerful and Simon is clearly standing there and alive, but the text says he died, so from the text this is the “bad” ending even though you have to play better to get it. Between stuff like this and the unhelpful “hints” from the townsfolk, this game would have been much better if they spent just a little more doing some quality control on the translation to English.

Just finished the game. Got the bad ending because it took me 14 days to finish. I like to look underneath every rock and get everything. 3 bosses and a lot of faulty mechanics, not an enjoyable game.

The game itself would transition from day and night so depending on when you fought Dracula determined the ending. I think the game made it easier to get to the castle at night (when Dracula would be most powerful) and you had to just waste time fighting enemies outside until it was day, but if you entered in between the transition you got the 3rd ending.

The grave says he was born in the 1431 and died 1476 and Castlevania 1 & 2 take place in 1690's . And the year 1476 is important because during that time Castlevania 3 Dracula's curse takes place . So you could say that the gravestone was originaly made by Alucard after Trevor killed Dracula , it makes sense .

I wish there was an ending where Simon lived but the curse took hold and turned him into a creature of the night. Then they could have a sequel where Simon is a cursed martyr who saved everyone, but he's corrupted and fighting with his dark side.

I looked forward to this game for so long when it first came out. And yet, in retrospect, it was a complete mess, including the botched endings. The single biggest clue should have been kneeling at the cliff for the tornado…I spent countless hours trying to figure that one out before giving up and calling the Nintendo hotline to tell me the answer. “Bloody Tears” was the only redeeming thing from this game in retrospect.
@cread80dsflkdsh
@cread80dsflkdsh 5 лет назад
Simon kneeling at the end = bad ending. The ending was determined by what time of day it was when you entered the castle. That's why some are day or night or dusk to night. I think the game got you there in the day and you were supposed to wait until dark to enter, but if you entered too soon you get the day turns into night ending.

This game was so complicated and beyond stupid in many ways. Granted, I am a fan of the game and series, but none of the endings makes sense. You can't say there is a "normal" ending really - because two of these (at least one does) blatantly says you died anyway! The black and white one doesn't say so, but it can be interpreted as such. To make matters even more confusing, the ending on the black and white one says the curse is lifted in Transylvania, but the "normal" one suggests there was still a curse going on in Transylvania. So if you look at it from the point of view that the hero dies (and if you say the black and white ones means that is the case too), neither one of those is a better ending! In fact, I argue that the "colored" one is worse because the curse is still there on Transylvania AND your hero died! I am surprised NO ONE has even analyzed that in the way I'm looking at it. The third good "ending" is cryptic in the fact that it doesn't say you died nor survived - but it is in color and says the curse is lifted from the city. It can be looked at in either way and many people just say he survived (and rightfully so). I am surprised many don't look it at that he probably died anyway - but looking at the fact you complete the game quickly, it makes sense in a way that this is the ideal ending. The manual never gives any hint at all on the time frame you must have to ideally complete the game. I read that through and through and doesn't say anything about time frames only suggesting that surviving longer in the game, you will be granted you a good outcome. Obviously not!
