I love cats, but you're right. They should be under the owner's control. They kill millions of birds and small animals a year. People who own cats should also realize there are people who absolutely hate cats and will hurt them on purpose 😢

It would be difficult to rescue an older cat and train it on a leash. I’m not sure how I feel about cats on leashes though. Keeping a cat indoors is another idea. I’m not sure what “HORRIBLE” for the environment means to you other than damaging flowers or gardens and maybe killing song birds and leaving cat urine and poo about? Cats do keep mouse populations down too I guess. Bunnies, squirrels, raccoons and children do property damage too. I guess it may be a great idea for future kitten owners to consider. My friend trained his cat to stay in the yard and he supervises his cat while outside too. I guess it comes down to humans to think about other people and their community when they have children and pets and we know how that goes. Good suggestion to think about.

There are species that would still be around if not for outdoor cats killing them all. This is a documented thing, you can look it up if you don’t believe me (sorry if this sounds rude, it’s not meant that way). I don’t hate cats for doing what they were made to do, but people do need to acknowledge the damage they do to local wildlife. If a cat can’t be restrained while outside, it really shouldn’t BE outside (possibly with the exception of working cats, like mousers). Besides, outdoor cats have, on average, like half the lifespan of indoor cats. Edit: for clarity, I’m not saying to keep a cat outdoor on a leash 24/7 like some people do with dogs. More for walks and supervised outside time, before returning to the house. Edit edit: by “the environment” I mean nature. The ecosystem, not a backyard. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Yep, a pretty stupid law. I don't care what kind of animal you have -- if you let it roam a public space and it attacks another animal or even worse a human, you should be held responsible.

Because there was absolutely zero evidence.... How can you not bring a photo of the injury. And even with a photo, how do you prove it wasn't the cat defending itself?? I'm a dog lover, and I believe cats should be restrained....but there just wasn't any proof of what the plantiff claims happened.

They didn't "take" the cat there - it's a stray that warmed up to them. That's how bodega cats are created, and anyone in the city who declares they don't like them will be very sorry when word gets around.

That's not true - cat scratches (and bites) are often worse because they can't be closed due to being deep punctures. They frequently get infected, and require antibiotics. That said, they don't usually attack for no reason because they're generally skittish and choose flight over fight.
