I have a female black kitty. She's 7 years old and my best friend. I've had a couple of other black cats in my lifetime. I have never understood why they're typically the last cats to be adopted. They're very special animals, imo.

Yeah maybe. My black cat has the worst temperament of my cats (only when she was outside though) but was also the most affectionate and clingy.

​@@dr.plagueman4226Yep. This is why I feel sorry for dog breeds like this one. They'd be absolutely helpless in the wild. A lot of dog breeds could manage to band up and successfully survive in the wild yet practically ALL cats could since cats are not really domesticated.

Agreed somewhat, in reality being smaller has it real drawbacks… for humans it can mean things like less income (most CEOs and what not are big tall people), less chances for romantic partners (women in practice prefer them 6+ feet tall), etc times a hundred. HOWEVER, I have learned one thing, even if you lose against someone bigger/taller, you can make that victory over you painful enough that they won’t try again.

Attitude, Attitude and attack mode, works wonders even if one is out gunned!

When I was around 6 or 7, my family got an orange tabby siamese mix. This male cat, ended up an absolute unit. He was long and lean like a siamese, but orange like a tabby, and he ended up weighing about 27 pounds at his physical prime. He had all the best characteristics of an orange cat, and a siamese. He was super affectionate and talkative like an orange cat, and super loyal and protective like a siamese. He'd walk my sister and I as children to the bus stop for school, a good 1.2-1.5 km walk. He was also hyper aggressive towards any animals there were not "his" animals, IE our dogs, and our other cats. One time when I was around 13 or 14, my friend came over and his full grown adult German Shepherd followed him. The dog got as far as the front porch when an orange streak slammed into this 80ish pound dogs head/shoulder era. My friend and I watched in astonishment as the cat went up one side of the dog and down the other in about half a second, followed by a German Shepherd running down the road at full speed yelping the entire way while an insane 27 pound cat ran at its heels intent on murder. We had big, giant canadian racoons around where I grew up. They never bothered us. They didn't mess with our garbage. They avoided our house, and mostly kept away from the neighbors as well. Later, when our big orange boy "Tuffy" was in his final days, as he went into renal failure, the Racoons he had routinely brutalized for a decade and a half started to come around. They'd creep up on the deck, and just the sight of him, even in his withered and dying state was enough to send the whole gang running. RIP Tuffy, you were a bad, bad dude.

I'm a cat person. But I loath certain dog owners. The ones who don't pick up after them. The ones who make them mean and dangerous, but don't secure them well. The ones who force dogs into spaces they don't belong. The ones who don't correct bad behavior because the dog is small and "cute". I can keep going. So, sometimes the sight of a dog puts me in a bad mood because I'm expecting the worst from the owner.

Some people make hating cats a part of their personality. That's a big red flag.

Since the dawn of mankind we were surrounded by wolves (dogs were the first domesticated animal). The wolves followed cats who were such better hunters they would kill extra game to leave behind to get the wolves off their tail (cats were the 6th domesticated animal as they had to evolve to be smaller).

I saw that security video. She was pissed. I've also seen a cat chase a bear off the yard and into a tree. And a cat slapping an alligator making it flee. For animal that small and fragile they sure have the sass.

It’s not that they were scared of the cat per se. Coyotes eat cats all the time. Cats win these battles with bigger predators by surprise. Running in with an unexpected chaotic tornado of claws will really disrupt their plans.

The power of bluff 😂 but never empty though, cats really are determined, tenacious, pain-harbingers kind of creatures when they get in that mode. Ride-and-Die lil monster fearless of death when they got triggered.

Even as a predator they usually have to weigh up if a meal is worth taking significant damage and risk for. If they become too injured in a fight to the death, they won't be able to feed themselves later down the line.

Surprise is paramount. Predators follow a precise pattern to hunt. If something disrupts that pattern, they usually don't switch instantly from "hunting mode" to "fighting mode", but they more likely flee. From a survival standpoint, that's more safe than starting to fight an unexpected threat without having assessed the situation before.

Most dont know they come from behind, may have litter mates, or mom. Scent over 40 yards away. Jump 6ft fences. Runs over 40mph. 6 am/pm can hear them begin the hunt. Leadmsh pet. Carry loud horn, blinding lite. Clap hands? They laugh.

Domestic cats are partially domesticated African wildcats. If they do not spend time with humans before the age of eight weeks, they will always have feral behavior and almost always fear humans. Wild African wildcats never become habituated to humans, no matter how young they meet humans. Domestic cats also vocalize a lot more than wildcats.

@@dzerkle I agree. You explained me probably behavior of 1 of my 2 cats. 1 of them I adopted as a young cub (he jumped on my balcony as a stray cat). For several years he was afraid of ppl (me too), didn't allow even to pet him (he avoided it). He was IMO older than the 8 weeks as you wrote, so my cat's behavior seems to confirm your information. That would be cruel, locking an outdoor cat in the house. Outdoor cats control their territory outside... not being allowed out would stress the cat and make them sick.

Im so sorry. They love old RR trails. They jump fences. Are used to people. Chase bikers. Can memorize times pets are let out. I had one howl 20 feet behind me. By my apt, 600pm in dec, warm out, we were under street lite. Calling for mates to hamstring me to get snak on a string. RIP

Looks like the cat was already heading back in, running in an arc. It did enough to scare them and get the dog loose before following the dog indoors, it didn't chase after them beyond it's territory. Smart cat.

Did you watch the video? Of course the cat is fine, he is a hero, remember? So heartbreaking? The dog was saved and had only minor wounds instead of becoming a late nite snack. This is a happy ending story, I mean, unless you're a hungry coyote. Everything isn't soul-wrenching.
