Cat’s Pajamas Catmint (Nepeta) doesn't love me back! In this video, I share before-and-after video of what happened to my Cat’s Pajamas Catmint. I explain why I’m removing all 18 plants, which never grew back after their initial flush of beautiful flowers. The plants looked diseased and horrible, whether planted in moist soil, dryer soil or perfect soil. Sometimes tough love is required to say goodbye to a plant you love that does not love you back!

We have catmint by the pool. Like everyone else it was spectacular at first, then it sorta faded away. We had folks over and she was an "expert". She said 1) I needed to thin them out, 2) they grow in "waves" BUT each wave had to be "started". When they started to fade I chopped them down to about 7". Sure enough, they returned with a vengeance. I began cutting the dead plant in Spring and thinning. So far so good.

Catmint is a drought tolerant plant. It does not like regular water so if you have a sprinkler that is keeping hydrangeas happy...you may be subjecting it to too much water. Also it is similar to Lavender...they do not like mulch.

18 plants over two years??? Goodbye cat’s pajamas. You gave it a great chance. 18 is a lot of money. I don’t have the time, patience or money for that. Two tries, maybe three. There are so many tough, pretty “great” plants that would work. I hate wasting money and time, in part because once the season is gone, it’s gone, a years worth of growth down the tubes. I only have Walkers Low Nepeta and it is a workhorse for me. Much good luck.
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Maureen -- yes, the first couple of plants I bought looked so good, that I purchased a bunch more. Luckily, I had divided quite a few of them, since I bought them in large pots, so the money wasn't as bad as it could have been. Nonetheless, it was a waste of money and time for me plus the heartache of looking at them -- yuck! Walkers Low is a variety I'm considering, once I get up my courage to try catmint again. I'm glad to hear how well it grows for you, so thanks for the suggestion! 👍🙂💜

I planted 3 summers ago. They looked good for a few months, but then declined quickly. Last summer, they came back, but only half the size. This spring, each of the five clumps have about 4 leaves. If I didnt know what I was looking at, I would think that they are weeds. I watched Laura on Garden Answer rave about them, but I’m tearfully pulling out this year.

Oh Dana, I feel your pain, but you'll also feel better once you don't have to look at them anymore! 🙂I absolutely loved them while in bloom, but then they were just so disappointing. And you're right -- so many gardeners rave about them, but as I said: they just didn't love me back! 💔

Oh that angst! Know what you're talking about, Laura. Nepeta didn't love me either although it spread like crazy and then looked grayed out like yours all summer long. This was quite a few years ago. Eventually I got all of it out of the bed it was in. I tried more water, less water, like you and nothing helped. I completely redid the bed where it was originally with more hydrangeas that I knew I could count on. It's just part of the whole experiment of gardening. Love your kitty in the window watching Mamma!!

Thanks Doleen - it sounds like you went through exactly what I went through. And you’re right: no plant is guaranteed to thrive for us, but I know it also doesn’t mean we failed either. I still think it’s a gorgeous variety…but I’m looking forward to trying something else! 🙂🌸

I have multiple varieties of catmint (in zone 6a) and the old fashioned walkers low is by far and away the healthiest and longest blooming. Now, it has a different look - it’s large, sprawling, kind of wild looking and pale - not the neat, tidy piles of vivid blooms of the newer brand name varieties. But even when cats pyjamas and purrsian blue for another example are healthy and bloom twice a season, the down time (and how bad they look during that down time) is a no from me. Which is sad. Because I bought a crap ton of catmint 😂 Check out Calamint instead (Calamintha nepeta - Blue or White Cloud). It’s a different plant, again, a different look (looks like sprays of baby’s breath) so not the intense vivid colour you may want for the front of the property but it’s a dang good workhorse to dot around. Comes up a little later in the spring then the plants I’ve “companioned” it with (lady’s mantle and salvia) but it lasted into November for me with little to no downtime. It’s a winner.

What a shame! They looked so pretty! My guess is spider mites also. I think they started to attack the undersides so that could be why spraying overhead didn't help. Seemed like they loved it too much. I had some damage on mine that I added this year but they recovered for now. I will keep an eye on mine and get ladybugs in the spring just in case. I would replace yours with maybe a shorter salvia or russian sage instead to get that purple/blue back into that spot. 💜

That almost looked like spider mite damage? I've had great luck with Walker's low nepeta. Only prune it once per year in early spring. I've got it planted in crappy clay soil and it does fantastic. Blooms all spring and summer, leaves always look good till a hard frost gets them. I've got about 8 of them rambling through a shrub boarder like a ground cover.

Good to know your success with Walker’s Low! Thanks! 👍 Maybe I should try one of those… 🙂 As for the damage, I wondered that too, so sprayed them hoping the Neem Oil would kill any bugs or fungus - but nothing improved, nor did they grow back. ☹️

I lost 2 out of 3 of my Cat's Pajamas this summer, although they bloomed well in the spring. Mine didn't just look bad--they died! However, I have a Junior Walker nepeta which has thrived for me several years in what I consider to be a less than ideal spot for it. The blooms are not quite as spectacular, but the plants looks good for most of the year and is semi-evergreen for me here in Zone 7B North MS.

Yes, that’s definitely what some of mine looked like too: just dead plants. 🙁 And I had such high hopes when they bloomed in May! Curious if he has what I call a happy-cranky meow - both of mine did, and none of my other cats have, so wondering if it's a black & white trait. @@originaljazzgirl Oh Barbara - first of all: Polly is/was stunningly beautiful! I would have loved staring right back at her, which I did while watching your video. No, neither of my black-and-white cats have stared like this for such a long period without looking away. Our kitty Aliza (RIP) felt like if you were staring at her, something might be wrong, so a lot of slow blinks were involved to show her things were fine. (And of course when they slow blink back to you, it’s the best.) And Ivan is a curious kitty, but doesn’t like when I aim the camera at him, even from a distance. That’s why I found it so funny he stayed in the window watching me. But his eyes are a gorgeous almond shape in a bright green/yellow that is quite striking. How unique that your “jellicle” cats have done that with you. Very special indeed! Thanks for sharing your video! 😻

I have had the same problem. I planted 6 Cat’s Meow in spring (at $20 a plant!), and after about 2 months, they started dying. I did dig one up and take it to one of the local garden centers. She thought it had aphids. I spayed and thought it helped at first, but ultimately lost all six. Then in another part of my garden I planted 6 of the Cat’s Pajamas about 4 weeks ago. I just saw the first signs of the plants not looking good. I will probably lose them all eventually…sadly! I will spray and try to keep them alive, but am not hopeful after seeing your video and reading all the comments. I will not plant any in the future unfortunately.

I feel your pain. I only have three plants but each looks like I water it too much which I don't. They can still be saved. Here is my plan: 1) plant them in individual pots with potting soil; 2) dig a hole large enough for the pot; 3) "plant" the pot. I've done this before with problem plants and it gives them a chance to revive. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in this plant.

I have the same problem with rose of Sharon. It doesn’t like me or my yard. What Is the plant in front of your window by Ivan? I have a cat that love watching out the window too. 🥰

It can be challenging (to say the least) when we’re trying to figure out whether it’s us or the plants! 🙃🙂 Silver King Euonymus is growing right in front of that window, with an ornamental maple tree in front of it (turning orange.) 🧡 Sometimes I like to figure out what Ivan is looking at (out the window) and then I see he’s actually snoozing! 😻💤

It’s definitely frustrating Snappy. 😟 I wish it was a sun issue, as that would be easy to fix by moving the plants. But they definitely got enough sun. We just need to find plants that will love us back! ❤️ 🙂

Hi Kate, I’m in southern New Jersey near the coast. 🌞 Thanks for the info on your Sumner weather. I have this idea that it’s beautiful and problem-free (weather-wise) in Maine for gardening. I just dream about northern states when I’m knee-deep in Summer humidity and blazing high temps! 🥵 Thrips were mentioned as a possibility, icky juice-sucking bugs. And if that was the case, very happy I removed them. 🙂 However, I still think gardeners should try it! 💜

Yes Maine is beautiful and for the most part I am happy with the weather..I moved from Vt. where the winters were way too long, so this coastal life suits me :) I am not a fan of humidity and I don't feel we have to deal with it over a long period of time. Thanks for the update on the thrips...I have heard of them but never had to deal with them...Have a great weekend and thanks for your videos,,,,I truly enjoy them 🙂

@@kategenereux1297 I lived in Boston for 20 years, and loved New England weather, especially the four distinct seasons! Here in southern New Jersey for example, the Fall season just sort of blends out from late Summer, and only this morning did we get our first overnight freeze. That's interesting to hear that VT winters were too long -- I love Winter, but then I want to get back to gardening! Sounds like you found the perfect spot to live! (I often tell my husband if we ever win the lottery, we're moving to New England so I can live near the coast. I'm on the coast here, but it isn't quite the same as a "New England" coast!) 🍂❄🌷🌺❤

That actually looks like spider mite damage. Mites love hot, dry conditions. My Walker's Low and Cat's Meow were attacked by spider mites, and it looked just like your Cat's PJs. I propagated some catmint cuttings, and even those small plants got mites. I could tell because I shook the leaves over white paper and I could see them. I sprayed off the pests with some water and also sprayed them with a recipe of water, peppermint Castile soap, and rubbing alcohol that I found online, and they are recovering, but I may substitute salvia, lavender or Russian sage because I've lost a bunch of plants already, and it is a bit of a pain to maintain.

@TRguy64 14 дней назад
Yes, I believe you are correct about the spider mites, certainly appears as such to me. My 'Cat's Pajamas' are doing fantastic in their third year, they're in deeply prepared soil and receive the occasional waterings, though have not been fed. The foliage is healthy dark green and absolutely smothered in bloom!

Oh I remember you sharing that about the stray cats rolling around in it. Not fun! And yes, the fact that it looked dead is what finally did it for me, especially since there were plants very much alive right next to them no matter where they were planted! 🤷

Did you mention about really good soil for cats pajamas? I guess it was the really good soil causing the issue. They are like lavenders, not needing good soil. Good soil can kill them.

You're right in that Nepeta doesn't like to be fussed over with good soil and fertilizer and apparently lots of sweet talking to as well. 😅 However, some of them were planted in poorer soil, and they were also unhappy after they bloomed their hearts out. But thanks for mentioning the good soil being an issue -- I appreciate it!

Is cat mint the same as cat pajamas nepata? They look the same and I know nepata doesn't like water but I wanted to plant some in a front border with sedum in front of them. Really pretty in my dreams but sure don't want your results, either. Thanks

@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Mary -- yes, Cat's Pajamas Catmint and Cat's Pajamas Nepeta are the same plant. I planted several of mine in a dry area, as well as some that were planted where they received more water than they probably wanted. None of them did well, no matter how they were planted. All had full sun. I think planting sedum in front like you suggest is a great idea, as the eye will then see the pretty sedum once the Cat's Pajamas has finished blooming. I was never able to get another round of flowers on them, but I hope you'll have much better luck. These are beautiful plants when blooming!

Love your cat in the window. Too funny. I’m on the iffy wagon for my cat’s pj too. This is my first season with mine so going to give them another year to see what happens. It always amazes me how people use the term “dirt” for when they mean soil. Dirt is dead. It has no living organisms,nutrients or any minerals and lacks texture and structure. Plants would not survive in dirt. But soil on the other hand. That’s what we want in our gardens.

Can someone explain to me why nepeta only goes up to zone 8 if it’s a “sun loving” perennial?? if it likes the sun so much, why isn’t it extended to zone 9 or 10? I’m in zone 9B and I’ve always wanted to grow this, but considered it to be a plant that I could never grow. Fast-forward to a few nights ago I was at Home Depot and I noticed they had a whole stack of them! Why would they even be selling them at a Home Depot in zone 9 if they only go to zone 8? Also, I know there’s always a little bit of wiggle room with zones, does anyone think I can grow this in Louisiana, zone 9B??

I'm wondering now if I can grow Cat's Pajamas in Zone 8b Texas in our full, hot summer sun. I have my doubts. I have two that have been waiting for me to finish my new garden bed, that gets direct sun from about 1pm to sundown, but I think I'll pot them and set them in filtered sun for now.

Hi Jim -- I almost wish that was the reason, but these wood chips are simple playground mulch -- untreated and no dye, so nothing that could harm them unlike treated mulches. I'm working on a new garden bed that will be drought-tolerant with no additional water once the plants are established. I plan on trying a different catmint variety in that bed and see if I have better luck. Thanks for the suggestion!
